Hey, fa/tg/uys and ca/tg/irls, I'm curious about something. If I was to add in a not!Japan into my setting, and I did not want them to be human, what race should I make them? Elves, aasimar, dragonkin, lizardfolk, or what? I don't mean to be racist or anything, I'm just curious how you would approach this if you were in my shoes.
I'll post samurai and oriental warriors types in exchange. I'll also take requests for anything Asian oriented.

Tieflings. They use Honor and community-oriented codes of conduct to curtail the destructive selifhsness inherent due to their inhuman ancestry. They might even use ancestral or animist magic to ensure that their racial features are universal, rather than wildly divergent.
Why not just use Youkai like a normal person?

If you are going to do that then why not just go with the Oni since there are already similarities between them. Only instead of portraying them as brutes you can portray them as a warrior species. If you are gonna do no!japan then there has to be at least some far east feel to it, western ogres won't really give that feel.

I did this in my game!
My not!japan was mostly tengu and "oni," which is to say orcs. Orcs in my game can be green, blue, or red-skinned, and they often have horns.

Short, cute, worship dragons, have a ridged culture where they always defer to their superiors, will work themselves to death for the good of their company/people, and you can do something interesting with dogbolds.
Do a custom race of anime people with big eyes and miniscule everything. They can be the bane for your Not!Japan people tho.
