>The sizes of all spiders and insects now range from that of a small dog to that of a large horse
How fucked is humanity? Can we survive in such a world? Do we want to?
>>
>spoiler

If they look like your pic, yes; we do.
>>
It would probably be the exact same. Just because there's a dog sized spider, it doesn't mean it will act like a small spider, only bigger. As they would be larger, larger brains, which means they would actually act like vertebrates. They'd fill the same niches, and those giants ants aren't actually ants, just cows, and those spiders are dogs, and those tarantulas are bears. Not literallly, but the thing with giant insects is that they wouldn't act like regular insects, because convergent evolution and biological niches.
>>
>>46674482
>they can no longer support their weight or properly "breathe" so they all die
>everything that normally eats them starves
>energy pyramids collapse
Well, not having all the nice bugs that pollinate plants would be a drag, but I'm confident that we could pull through.
>>
>>46674482
Well if that happens humanity has much worse problems. For insects to grow that large the oxygen content in the air would be extremely high. We would all likely die from the massive atmosphere changes.
>>
>>46674482
That's easy. Just start lighting shit on fire. Oxygen levels will drop back down soon enough.
>>
>>46674482
Well, the exoskeletons would actually become way more brittle and frail, so a quick slap or jab would break/crack the shell and cause incredible damage for the effort we put into it.

Like how you give your friend a charlie horse? Probably straight up break a leg off of a spider of that size.

I could just chuck rocks at them until they die. And if you wore proper protective gear against piercing/slashing shit they'd be nearly unable to harm you outside of sheer bulk, which isn't that impressive for the most part due to the center of balance being so easy to manipulate since it's pretty concentrated.

Honestly it wouldn't be as bad as you think.
>>
>>46674482
They all die out of asphyxiation.

Since bees are insects, we are pretty much dead within a year. And before that anything that was eating insects dies too.

So we pretty much reached the planetary extinction event.
>>
>>46674786
>because we can't artificially pollinate plants

nigga you dumb
>>
>>46674482
I actually would prefer this. They wouldn't be able to sneak into my house from every crack and cranny, anymore.

Nor would they be able to suddenly appear on your body without any warning.
>>
>>46674482
Seeing how almost every ecosystem collapses almost immediately, and the climate change which occurs in response to this only slightly less immediately, which wipes out 99% of the parts of the ecosystem that had survived, I'd say humanity is pretty fucked.
>>
>>46674837
>Nor would they be able to suddenly appear on your body without any warning.
When the spider under your bed suddenly finds itself the size of a large horse, then you can bet it's gonna be all over your body without warning.

Is this a sudden transformation, or are all the existing insects removed and replaced with an equivalent mass of fewer giant bugs, or do insect sizes gradually rise over several generations?

If the former, very bad shit happens. Ants alone number around one to ten quadrillion; scale those up to "very small dog" (about 5 lbs each), and you have enough total ant to cover Earth's entire land area to between 0.6 and 6 inches if spread evenly.

And that's just the ants.

The primary component of Earth's surface above sea level will be giant bug corpses. The gasses released by their decay will kick off runaway global warming.

>How fucked is humanity?
Probably, although likely not for the reasons you are thinking.

Estimates for the number of living insects on the planet is somewhere around 10 quintillion, by some experts. Most numbers for livestock are in around 1 billion for each type, so let's just say 10 billion total to keep things simple.

Now, imagine if you took all the livestock in the world, and then multiplied it by one billion. And tried to feed them all.

The threat of every insect suddenly being dog-sized or even horse-sized isn't being eaten. It's having all your food suddenly be eaten, the wood in your house being eaten, the leather in your shoes being eaten, and everything else. Forget about the army ants trying to take a bite out of your leg. Worry about the cow-sized termines that will chew your house apart and the locusts swarms which will wipe out every single crop worldwide, causing massive starvation.

I believe we probably could. Considering how evolution works, such a thing would take a long time. By that time Humanity would have evolved into something greater. Hell we would probably have Psionic powers and control all animals through it.

No.
>>
>>46674482
This has been touched on by other posts, but basically humanity wouldn't be fucked at all if the only thing that changed is that the arthropods are bigger. They wouldn't be able to breath and their exoskeletons would be incredibly frail. It would be a mass extinction of the arthropod's side.
>>
>>46674482
There becomes no more room on land. also ll the bugs and arachnids can't move because of the weight of their exoskeletons.

Bear Grills told me this
>>
>>46674482
Pretty fucked up, since their carapaces can't support their weight, coupled with the fact that they suddenly become incapable of breathing.

Similarly there's a LOT of micro-insects, many of which can cover portions of your body - this, coupled with the sheer number of insects and spiders, means that the earth would suddenly gain an organic sphere that stacks up to the lower atmosphere, immediately crushing, suffocating, and organic processes heat-killing everything at the bottom (us).

Hope that answers the question.
>>
>>46685911
I forgot to mention that this would be an ecological disaster as well, since they wouldn't be able to fill their niches.

Kind of second fiddle to the 'organic mass crushes and suffocates everyone,' but here you are.

Still too fucking many, currently there is more mass on the planet in the form of insects than there are humans. Humans and all ants are roughly even in total mass.

A less absurd setup would be a set number of insects of a random type by number of humans. Such as ten insects per human or something.

It's true though, there are more insects than all the other fauna put together, pretty much bazillion of them, and now you just multiplied their weight by 1000 or more. Lessening the africanized traits isn't the issue. The issue is that the media expected to see immediate results within one or two generations and started screaming doomsday when it didn't happen. They then started screaming doomsday even louder when it started to sell more papers. There are people out there currently working on it, and the managed africanized strains are improving.

And as for European bees. They're so hybridized already that it's a crap shot what your new queen will be like.

The nice thing about bees is that you can just kill an aggressive queen and replace her with a non-aggressive queen. The temperament of the hive will change to fit the temperament of the new queen within a few minutes.

I adopted an aggressive hive once, allowed them to build a queen cell, killed the current queen and her daughter was gentle as a lamb.

Anything can integrate as long as you kill the ones that don't show the desired traits.

The number of insects in the world are estimated to be between 364,800,000,000,000,000 and 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 individuals. The Earth surface is 500,000,000,000,000 square meters. So per square meter we have something between 700 and 20000 insects.

So if all the insects are small dog sized and we take the lowest estimative we would get a nice 3m layer of bugs covering the Earth, since insects are not very common in the oceans and more common on land you can make that 9m

If they are large horse sized and we take the large estimative them the earth would be covered in giant bugs reaching the stratosphere.

What if insects just always were large? That's much more interesting than these retarded "hurrr too many bugs we all die instantly" answers

what if the laws of physics were such that their body type didn't suffer on a large scale (maybe involving a fictional substance making up their exoskeletons that has properties unlike normal insect exoskeletons)

Naturally there wouldn't be too many because they have always been this size so their population size would be appropriate

We've tried. The Spartans and others have tried breeding warriors and royals have done it for years with their progeny. It's just it wasn't for a specific purpose other than getting bigger people for fighting or some kind of nebulous purpose like a royal pedigree(which kinda led to incest sometimes and that doesn't ever work out well biologically speaking).

Eugenics is a sticky issue. A there's a lot of shit that is mixed up in politics and opinion instead of just facts. People don't like to remember that they're nothing more than a sophisticated animal with high level intellect and social structure.

Them it wouldn't be much different from today.

Sure a giant tarantula could kill you but a tiger also can kill you and none of them are common in cities. We would domesticate some of them like having aphids to produce aphid syrup, and maybe even have some giant black soldier fly breed that lack wings so we can use their larva to convert waste and leftovers into more food.

Since insects have always being large plants would also be different as they co-evolved with them. A normal sized dandelion would make no sense if all the bugs pollinating it are bigger than it. Them plants would be giant too. Everything will fall in a chain reaction until you reach a "what if humans were tiny" world.

>How fucked is humanity? Can we survive in such a world?

Pretty fucked. With all the spiders and insects dead from being too fucking big to live given their phisiology, there won't be any bees pollinating shit, and our food production will be in the shitter. Basically all the world's ecosystems will also get fukken rekt as well, since that's a big part of the bottom end of the food chain gone.

Humanity may survive, but billions will die.
>>
>>46693079

If you're that salty about getting the intended answer to a shit question then:

Assuming the insects all work like B movie giant bugs

After a short period of intense chaos from having like a billion times more medium to giant animals around everywhere, 99.99% of them, as well as probably everything else dies off because the ecosystem can't handle it, and then everyone dies from there being no regular sized insects to pollinate things.

Eventually, whatever species manage to survive, be they giant insect or regular animal, form some rough equilibrium as the new food chain.

My guess is that probably everything on land larger than little mice die off, which would include all insects.
>>
>>46689829
This assumes they just get larger, period.

I'd like to see gigantic versions with adaptations to breathe and not crumble under their own weight...

But then again, by that point they might as well just be vertebrates.

Because that can only end up in stupid arthropod wank and that makes me angry.

If you want to go magical realmy, the queen releases a pheromone that suppresses her daughters sexual organs. If the queen gets too old, her pheromone levels drop, and the workers biology will start to kick in. Workers are incapable of breeding but they can still lay unfertilized eggs.... lots.... seriously it turns into a hell of a shit storm.

The queen mates once in her life, with a few males, mid flight. The males genitals actually explode, ripping out half of his internal organs, when he cums. She fills an internal sperm sack which she then uses over the course of her life time. She releases one individual sperm for every egg she lays. She can choose to not release a sperm and lay an unfertilized egg. Unfertilized eggs will hatch into males.

Males are ejected from the hive as winter approaches and left to starve or freeze to death.

Insect males never get a break, do they?
Nor do the males of most species, insect males just have it the worst

Could you imagine if we domesticated them though? Riding into battle astride a giant fucking wasp, the sound of your buzzing steed and its fifty other brothers a terrifying call to your enemies?

Could you imagine the beast wars? American black widow riders versus saharan scorpio-kings versus the (literally) Goliath Tarantula Men of the Amazon?

This is /tg/, comrades, lets get fantastical with this shit. You're all so dour and gloomy about it.

>bugs get big
>die because atmosphere isn't high enough oxygen concentration for their passive respiration systems to perform the necessary gas exchange
>all of them die
>entire ecosystem collapses along with human civilization

even if all that happened was the ants died out the world would be fucking chaos.

africanized bees produce more honey and are generally better bees that don't suffer as much from ccd and such.

they're just more aggressive than western bees.

The experiment was a complete failure in every single way. The Africanized bees don't even have the desired house keeping behavior that they were looking for. The problem in America is that you aren't allowed to deal with the problems causing CCD. The amount of evidence suggesting that over spraying crops and medicating diseased hives of bees is leading to side effects in your managed hive populations. Nobody wants to deal with that shit storm because the companies make billions of dollers for the economy. The rest of the world doesn't medicate hives and limits crop spraying and doesn't have the problem. China does the same thing as America and now their farmers are climbing trees with goose feathers, loaded with pollen, because they've lost a fuckhuge chunk of the bee population.

The reason why Africanized bees show less cases of CCD is simply because the bees don't get medicated and don't get brought into areas that are being heavily worked.

I remember watching an Attenborough documentary about the mating habits of insects. They were trying to get a couple of mantis to breed. So they let the male approach the female. As soon as the male got close the female ripped him in half, it just took a second. You'd figure that meant she wasn't interested, but then she starts fucking the abdomen of his severed corpse.

That's why your Thri-keen warrior is with an adventuring party. He's not trying save the world, he doesn't care about you or your politics, he just doesn't want to go back home and deal with the females. Facing down a demon, vampire, dragon or demi-God has better survival prospects.
