> Army of Darkness
> Stardust
> The Princess Bride (read the book, too)

> Highlander (just the first one)
> The Mummy
> Dragonheart
> The Dark Crystal

> Time Bandits
> The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

Enjoy.

I kid. 13th Warrior was great.

Anyone interested in fantasy movies should check out Krull.
>>
Dragonslayer, Hawk the Slayer, Ladyhawke, Kull the Conqueror, Krull.

I personally rate Hawk for glorious cheese, and Dragonslayer because it's actually really good and has Palpatine in it.

Here's the movie list to get you running fantasy right:
Labyrinth
Princess Bride
Flight of Dragons
The Neverending Story
Camelot (the film w/ Harris & Redgrave)
Beauty and the Beast (Disney)
The Witches
The Wizard of Oz

Adventure and a sense of wonder. No gritty, dark violence. Whimsy, drama, heroics!

Beastmaster is arguably the best grade-B fantasy film out there, but Krull is trash. The first Beastmaster, that is; Beastmaster 2 is an abomination.

I like the idea, but always thought the movie was a bit meh. I always preferred Duncan to Connor, though the TV series had its share of shortcomings and I'd be willing to bet that it hasn't aged well either.

I kind of think that if you're gonna watch Army of Darkness, you owe it to yourself to watch the Evil Dead remake first (Evil Dead 2). Some of what I found so enjoyable about Army of Darkness was the tone shift from Evil Dead, which seemed to make it funnier.

I am loving this entire thread.

I'll throw in Deathstalker, Barbarian Queen, and Conquest for cheesy South American Conan-ish stuff that's like 20% porn.

Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans are classics. Also Ben-Hur for epic chariot action, though it's not actually fantasy except for the second half where suddenly Jesus. The remake and sequel of Clash of the Titans are eh, but have some neat-looking critters.

They're good if you don't know any history.

I watched it with a friend about an hour ago and I ended up talking shit through the ENTIRE movie.

It's hard to take as a fantasy because it's based on a real event.
>>
>>46623103
I wouldn't go that far. It's over-hyped, and definitely has some flaws, but it's not garbage. And the over-hyped thing is somewhat understandable given how few big budget, professional fantasy movies there have been.

>J. R. R. Tolkien is an awful writer and the plot could have been easily made in one book instead of three books.
Tolkien *is* an awful writer, but a lot of that comes down to the way the story is told, and not the underlying story, itself. At the very least, you have to admit that the movies were a lot more exciting that the books.

As far as the second point goes, I disagree. Making LotR into one movie would more than likely have been a disaster. Maybe they could've done it in three movies of more modest length, or even two long movies, but one movie would've been ridiculous. A similar thing applies to the books. I mean, I guess Shogun is like 1200 pages, so yes, you could technically have made LotR into a single book, but not by cutting it down to a third of its length. At least not unless you wanted to lose a lot of content.
>>
>>46624173

He was talking about the books, not the films, which I sadly have to agree with. They are not a quick read and there's so many side-things that got cut and the movies still needed an editor.
>inb4 scouring of the shire. It's the one part they should have left in. That was so important to the themes of the book.

Not a good idea if you don't like truly cartoony combat.

There is a bit where the templar cuts all the way through one guy's hand, all the way through another guy's axe, through all his armor, through all his ribs down to his pelvis, in one swing.

It really doesn't get better from where you left off.

Mazes & Monsters, ah, now that takes me back.

I'm adding this to the pile. This one really got to me when I watched it. It's such a great cautionary tale about every single type of bad character in there. It was also a little personal to me, because had it not been for my ex prodding me out of my autism shell, I probably would have wound up exactly like the main character of this movie, Scott. I was THIS close to it. Luckily, I wound up avoiding a fate worse than death.

Adding on to THAC0, this one isn't technically /tg/ related, but I feel that it's much, MUCH closer to /tg/ in terms of scope than it is /v/.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRhbcDzbGSU

This is called Get Lamp. It's a google tech talk with the creator of the movie, the movie itself being a documentary about the text-based adventure genre, which was basically a single-player D&D puzzle game. The tech talk has the creator actually show the entire movie in its full glory, so its free to watch, and actually surprisingly interesting.

I don't mind cheesiness, I just don't want it to be dependent on cinematographic obfuscation.

Like cutting through a guy's hand, axe, armor, and torso is cool. It's metal. I just don't want to see the guy get ready to swing, then have the camera cut to an angle where you can't see what's going on as it shakes around, then a shot of the guy reacting to being hit, and then a shot of the guy with a sword now stuck inside him. That's bullshit.

I want to see the guy swing, clearly. Choreography > cinematography

Well you'll be disappointed there too. There's a bit where the lolVIKINGS!!!!!!!1111111one (in 1215 long after denmark was christianized and about 100 years after the end of the viking period) cut a bunch of dude's hands off, and it's mostly obfuscated, before they pan back to leaking stumps. Come to think of it most of the shots you actually see are retarded crazy cgi gore, anything that would be an actual wound they pretty much work around. I think that's what pisses me off.

But you won't be disappointed if you like heavy metal because fucking everyone dresses like the guys Halford has fucked.

Son, you need to get your oriental movies on!

God of gamblers - gambling and magic!
Dragon inn - everyone is a PC trying not to get killed at the inn.
flying swords at dragon inn - people hunt for treaure where the infamous dragon gate inn was burned down
The pirates - piracy, whales, kung fu and why waterwheels are bad for you!
13 assassins - based on a true story. Maybe except from the guy surviving a katana to the throat (though it is subtly implied that he is a tanuki)
jet lee evil cult - can be found on youtube, shit is crazy.
Iron monkey - a doctor has a secret identity as robin-hood style thief.
Tai chi zero/hero - china is getting industrialised but a small village is in the way of progress (railroads or some shit) one retard with kung-fu demon powers helps them. also steam mechas?
Wu dang - part indiana jones, part rat race, all kung-fu.
The duel - really, the duel is the most boring part of the movie, you watch it for agent9 and the princess.

>>46626251
Valhalla commits the cardinal sin of bad movies.
It is boring.
NOTHING happens for 2 hours then a guy gets raped in the ass and everyone is shot or clubbed to death by canadians.
And even those murders are boring.
>>
>>46626423
I meant valhalla rising.
you SHOULD watch Valhalla, the danish cartoon movie.

It's similar in vein to A Field In England, where it was trying to be a low gritty somewhat historical horror movie. But I'd say Field is better as a Dark Souls kind of movie, and also better in general. It has tighter writing, much more clever dialogue, and more experimental death/purgatory themes, an infinitely better psychedelic drug sequence and much more interesting characters. Also Irish Potato Satan.
>>
>>46626524
but there is no horror about valhalla rising.
It's just bleak.

There are attempts at horror, but few of them are any good. They're mostly in the second part. It's just too shitty as a movie overall though, because the characters are all non-presences.

>The unseen skraeling chucklefuck shooting that one guy in the belly, that whole scene is drawn out in a lot of the same ways a lot of gore scenes in horror flicks are

Bad photoshop that undermines the real people who used reenactment combat armor durring the Ukrainian riots. Then 9gag stole it and slapped a shitty watermark on it.

The Ukrainian Battle of Nations team actually lost some of their top fighters in the violence, as the cops started targeting them after they organized protesters with shields and repelled the police shield wall.

Though as an Australasian, I should be outraged at the amount of footage they ripped right out of "The Lighthorsemen" to make that episode. There are a few chapters that have more descriptions of mundane life than any story progression. If that's what you like? great, this book is for you but I would rather read a book that gets somewhere within the span of a 100 pages and not just give me a vivid image of the mountain they are currently crossing.

My inner sperg is coming out here, but LOTR was never meant to be three books. It was just meant to be one great big doorstopper of a book, but paper prices in postwar Britain meant no publisher wanted to release such a beast all at once without knowing if it would sell.

And compared to a lot of other fantasy series like A Song of Ice and Fire, The Dark Tower, or (ho boy) Wheel of Time, LOTR is relatively compact.
>>
>>46634060

Yeah, but it's not like the studio said "This is totally a remake", everyone just assumed it was. As for the Arnie movie being superior... I dunno. James Earl Jones and Mako were perfectin the '82 movie, but Mamoa felt more like Conan to me, and Ron Perlman was great as Conan's dad. In fact, the '11 Hyboria felt far more like Robert E Howard's original vision overall.
