I think you could have distilled this line of reasoning down to make it a bit more dense, or at least chopped it up into bite-sized snippets and/or buried it in other text with a helping of subtlety, but otherwise an attempt was made.

Obvious bait aside, guard are the humanity in 40k - fragile, vulnerable, gutsy and often cowardly - individuals achieving victory and rising above only against the odds. Space marines are on the whole cold and above humanity, 'know no fear' being a very inhuman trait. Some are closer to humanity than others, sallies being the obvious ones, but they are still 'other'. The stories in so much of the fluff hinge on this.
