This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Please do not shitpost, and please report any shit posters attempting to derail discussion or cause strife. This means avoiding tripfag drama or discussion about subjects such as 'make a board for quests'.

These are two directories containing the tweets of many current QM's. While a twitter is by no means mandatory, it is a useful tool for both you and your players. To get added to the second list, tweet @tgQuestList. Spamming tweets unrelated to your quest may result in its removal.

> QM question
Do you ever look back or reread your quests and wish to have done something differently?

> Player question
Your favorite QM gets sick of oneitis and asks you to substitute him/her/it for an entire month. What would you do during that time?

Here we go again. Another weekend, another shitposting fest, another 15+ quest ideas proposed, gutted/accepted and then they never run, and people rightfully shitting on DLQ.

How to run a mystery/detective quest:

Propose a mystery
Pray that you have enough players
Pray that you have enough player discussion
Read every shadowrun your players come up with
Incorporate some of it into the mystery (which you had no idea how to actually solve)

y/n?

How much lewd is too lewd for /tg/?
>>
>>46540608

Nah. Pulling a solution out of your ass that doesn't fit clues is what killed that Harry Potter quest a ways back.
>>
>>46540636
>that doesn't fit clues
That's the problem, not "pulling the solution out of your ass".

Anyone up for an ace combat rpg campaign? We've got a relatively inexperienced DM over at /vg/'s /aceg/ who was an opening for 4 players, so I figured /tg/ would be a good place to look for 3 others.
>>
>>46540651

I'd say they're related. Part of what's fun about a good mystery is looking back at the clues in a new context to see a pattern that wasn't apparent at first but seems obvious in hindsight. If the writer doesn't know the solution from the start then you just have random shit for no reason.

Smutquests are allowed, as long as they aren't too ghetto for the mods.

Update on that quest that got mentioned a little while ago regarding an Insight mechanic.

It's still in the works. I ran into a wall in development and realized some mistakes I made that were giving me trouble moving forward. Those are being addressed as I change some things around, but it likely won't be happening this weekend.

You know what, I'm going to dump all the Quest Pitches that have been sitting in the old suggestion box and see what anyone has to say about them.

Let's have some fun and see how these ideas have aged.

>>
Star Witch Quest
A witch goes around space, collecting stars and building constellations. Along the way she encounters various other star creatures and sights, and must use her ability to create living constellations to complete them.

Space Cycler Quest
You wake up in the cycler that was supposed to bring you and your family to Khembalung, a new colony rumored to have an Earth+ biosphere, with a voice inside your head and the arm replaced by a weapon feeding off of your energy. The voice tells you it's the ship, and that if you want to save yourself, and those few whose cryosleep pod hasn't been lost, you must claw your way deeper and try to take control of the ship. Yes, it has taken the liberty of implanting itself inside you... The weapon in your arm is the ship is the only way not to die eaten by the Others.

EM Drive Quest
You are the first guy to find out how the EM Drive works. Being an engineer, and having no sense of right or wrong, you use it as your super power.
Drive hoverboards, fly around on microwaves and kill people by boiling them from the inside.
Just make sure to be subtle. Every time you use your powers, you disrupt nearby power and communication. You don't want the secret services finding you, do you?
Endgame is in Africa or North Korea, where you can use your powers unimpeded because there's nothing to disrupt.
Also, the MC may die of cancer at the end.

TellaNovella Quest

8-Bit Dystopia Quest ZERO
The prequel to the 8-bit Dystopia homebrew setting on 1d4chan. The fall of Earth came when they rained from the sky. Pressed to the frontlines, our forces were fed to a meatgrinder against the myriad legions of the Space Invaders. In this time, small miracles were seeded, the hope that one of them might start to turn against the overwhelming alien tide. Many desperate, wonderweapons were brought to light, but they and the people surrounding them were lost to time and the devastation that brought about the present. These are the stories of time being forgotten in the grime and misery of the City of now.

Jedi Quest
It's like Sith Quest, only without having to go through that damn academy. You start out as a kid living in the wilds of some planet. AND THEN A JEDI COMES and decides to take you under his wing after sensing how strong you are in the force or whatever. His padawan gets jealous of all the attention and praise you're getting. After he teaches you some basic lightsaber combat and force abilities, his rival, SOME SITH LORD, comes to the planet your master is on and fights him. Your master and the sith lord fight, and he tells you and his padawan to leave on his ship for the Republic while he stalls the sith lord from murdering you to cause your master pain. Your character then has the option to fight the Sith Empire, help entire planets, or learn how to use the Force more effectively. Your master had a technique he used that combined the Force with the slash of a sword that could send slashes at people only blockable with the Force. And then it's Old Republic shenannigans from there on out.

Stellar Girl Quest/Fallen Star Quest
One night while sitting in your window box, wishing upon the far off stars, something bright and shining fell into your backyard. Investigating, you found a young girl in the middle of a starburst of scorched earth that's ruined a part of the back yard. Now you've got to care for this girl who doesn't speak, looks at the world around you with an undeniably curious spark, doesn't seem to understand body language, and seems to stick to you like glue and seems terrfied and afraid when you aren't near; luckily for you she seems to be learning about the world with some speed.
Where did she come from? How can you manage caring for this mysterious girl who seems to have fallen in love with you? And what are you going to do when the night sky falls looking for her?

Restless Dreamer Quest
-You are Kay, and you don't have many friends.
-Every day you go to school and try to go unnoticed; you have gotten exceedingly good at it. It isn't that you don't want to be sociable...but you just don't get most people, and that scares you. Other people scare you, even the ones whom you have let into your world.
-That is about to change. You had a strange dream last night, a woman you had never seen tried to warn you that something was coming. She gave you a mote of light and you woke. During a lecture that same day, people in your class are starting to doze off. Even the instructor doesn't look like he's all there. Despite your efforts to stay awake, you succumb to the mysterious call. Which is when you find yourself in a blasted field, surrounded by the weary forms of your classmates, each tethered by luminescent tendrils to a floating creature of indistinct and ever shifting color and shape.
-Protect or discard the people of your home from the things that would ravage their dreams. Explore your own mind and face or worsen your own issues. Delve into the dreams of others to protect them from the formless terror or for your own devices. Explore the power granted by the woman or take up the power of nightmare.

Rogue Trader Xenos Hunter
You comb the stars for rare Xenos life forms, because you can probably squeeze some coin from the Inquisition by providing them with samples of and tactical information on more Xenos to purge. Unfortunately your family has fallen on some hard times, and the ship you were left with was a bit small. No matter, You have crew enough to get where you're going, and where you are going is a future full of attractive ladies or wherever the universe takes you.
Unfortunately you are also being hunted by some weird Xenos because they think something about you or your ship would be useful in their ongong conflict with another group of Xenos. You really don't care, they aren't rare at all and the Imperium kills them by the score.
With your Felinid first officer and loyal but frustrated Tech Priest by your side, you'll get what you're looking for, Baby!

High Brow Sci-Fi Quest
Based on the mad ravings of an infamous tripfag from /m/, Clawshrimpy, this quest would be an attempt to turn the anime Gao Gai Gar into a serious sci-fi epic.

Familiar Quest
From the infinite darkness, yawning cosmos, infernal pits, or fey wild lands you have been summoned. Bound to a mortal master of magics and given form and perspective when once you were part of a greater whole. Oh how it pleases you to have form and identity, though small. There is just one problem, your new master is a braindead slacker. Guide them to greatness, or find a way to sever your bond without reverting to your previously unpolished and nonexistent state so YOU can find greatness.

Cat Quest
You were named Captain Krinkles by the small progeny of the oaf that brought you to the place you call home. It would be demeaning if you could understand it. This tavern is where the people who feed you live and feed others. You get fed & hunt rats & mice, those things very much like the foods you do not like, but the big oaf and his ilk seem to enjoy. While away hunting mice, knocking glasses or steins off tables, and accidently acquiring sentience because of a Wizard who has no sense of right or wrong.
Then, once you have learned of your current life from a new perspective...decide to love your new family, hate them and swear revenge, or just be a cat and continue being a complete dick.

Space Jam Quest
Shut up and slam. Manage a team of space travelling basketball players. Scout out talented players from backwater systems. Negotiate player contracts, trade players who don't pull their weight. Manage your personal life as an extra terrestrial sports team manager. Try and get into the league finals to win the Cosmic Cup. Remember, in the end, you can still dunk.

Chubby Chaser Ex-Con Quest
You just got out of prison, you like big butts and you cannot lie, sometimes your past in prison and the stuff that happened in there comes back to haunt your new life or through flashbacks. Go date some big women and put your life back together after being thrown in the slammer after an old friend threw you under a bus and left their weed in your car. Not that you didn't smoke back then, he was just carrying enough for you to get charged with possession with the intent to distribute, and you were driving through a school zone. Damn motherfucker. Do you find revenge or thick cuties?
Quest with commentary on American Cultural Issues, the pursuit of putting back together a torn up life, chosing to pursue revenge or to let the past go, find happiness and the American Dream, occasional violence in the hood to protect what's yours or to get what you're owed.

Proud Merican Quest
Long time ago, no one knows fer sure, the world that was fell in a great calamity or some such hooey. That don't much matter to you, save for the idea stuck in yer head by your daddy and your daddy's daddy; that once you were part of a great people. It shows through in your strain, and your assorted disposition in this here wilderness. Long ago, in the land you wander now, there was a great nation called Merica. Alright, next up is the Cabal suggestion Vault. The ideas the Cabal liked so much they moved them to a vault that can't be edited or deleted for safe keeping.

African Warlord Quest
This quest would be basically a cliche anime betamax MC that begins to hear and get under the influnce of a renegade African warlord one day. Said warlord is basically in the style of one of crazier African dictators or Generals, like Gaddafi, Robert Mugabe, Muboto and General Butt Naked. Maybe even a bit of Haiti's Papa Doc, or Yugoslavia's Milosevic. in there. He is sociopathic, sadistic, out of touch with reality and callous, yet is shrewd and has great insticts. At first the MC thinks he's gone crazy, hearing the voice of a man who he's never met and probably never heard of and tries to ignore his new... err neighbor.

Sinbad Quest
It's just Sinbad quest. Fuck yeah Sinbad. Also features Hercules though he's less cool than Sinbad, and Xena can be there with the blonde chick I guess. Doubar and Rongar are the best. Anyway, you have adventures from all sorts of legends throughout history, especially from Arabian Nights (obviously) and lots of swashbucklin' and the fat guy punches people a lot and badass mute guy throws knives and those other crewmembers do whatever the fuck it was they did.

King of Monsters Quest
You are a giant monster in modern-day/slight future Earth who needs to consume chemical energy and biomass in some form to survive and grow stronger. In order to do so, you have to stomp other kaiju, puny human armies, and probably some giant robots and shit. SKREEONK your way to the top.

Dustbunny Quest
Players play an immortal mercenary that has to earn money to finance the fact that he's constantly burning through clones. They can take up contracts and will get payouts as long as their team wins, even if they spend the battle doing race car excercises with Light Assault Vehicles.
Also, they can go planetside and scavenge for loot, which can be sold. They can make short-term alliances and stab people in the back.
Basically, Ork Quest with a higher IQ.

>>46542053
Human Bizzarro Quest
You am not human bizzarro from world not Bizzarro; wondrous powers guide you through knowing exactly where you am on planet earth. Fly in hate with Human Woman and not get caught up in misunderstanding hijinks as you am greatest Bizzarro. Justice League am good friends and not looking for you because you am very safe for people to be around.
or
You are a normal Bizzarro. Not Bizzarro superman, just a Bizzarro of some guy. You're from Bizzarro world and lost on earth, you presence is over time harmful to the earth, but you don't know that. You just know you are lost and looking for a way home. You are also dumb as a brick and speak like silver age bizzarro everything.

Dragon Knight Quest
You play as a young female noble from one of the Kingdoms many families that has an obligation to become a Dragon Knight, a magic wielding dragon riding paladin-esque enforcer of peace and justice in the land. The majority of the quest would focus on battles with evil things that threaten the safety of the kingdom and cute dragon knights doing cute dragon knight things.

Winter Survival Quest
You are not sure who you are, where you are or how you ended up in the middle of some damned snow covered forest. You are sure of one thing however; you're going to die if you don't find a shelter soon. As the story progresses, weird things are going to happen. Animals and plants will slowly mutate into increasingly horrible abominations, new building will appear and more people will pop up(maybe for jolly cooperation). Enjoy hunting for food, mapping out the area and trying to find signs of civilization.

80s Buddy Cop quest.
Set in Miami during the 80s, the quest follows two young cops (with different personalities, of course) who will argue, shoot and seduce their way every episode. Dealing with Russian spies, Columbian drug dealers, a hardboiled and always angry boss, fast cars and Italian mobsters, all rolled into one. Supernatural elements optional. It can be 80s Shadowrun in that case, with ogre bouncers, troll bridgeworkers, dwarf russians who are always ready for a fight and so on.

Infinite Worlds Quest.
A Quest based on the GURPS "Infinite Worlds" setting, you play as an agent from Reich-5.

Agatha Christie Quest
Come up with the next best-selling detective novel/murder mystery. You also have to make your stories real. Each session is an elaborate plan to turn the murder mystery into reality. Sessions are a dual setup - One session planning, which runs for a few days, and one session execution. Every murder is specifically done in a style that suits a particular character of Christie's. Like Poirot or Miss Marple. All the other authors try to solve them using their own characters' methodology and demeanors.

Occult Wild West Quest
The main character is a bounty hunter and investigator of the supernatural in the last days of the Wild West. Dealing with criminals, shooting monsters, investigating old ruins and legends, all that stuff.

Vanitas Quest
You have died--a tragic slip from your horse while hunting--and Death comes to bring you to what comes after, only for you to find The Reaper has taken ill. His caress is not what it used to be, he is no longer capable of carrying out his duty. Will you take up the scythe and punish your fellows who shirk their solemn duty to perish? Revel, secure in your belief that you have already survived the only true punishment this world has to offer? Marshal the rest of the Dead & march to bring back those the Reapers have taken? Attempt to nurse your Reaper back to health so that the cycle can continue just as it always has? ...or has it truly always been this way?

Sakuya Quest
You're a perfect and elegant maid & your job is to keep your mistress and her annoying-as-fuck friends, family & freeloaders from ruining the whole fucking mansion like the careless spastics they are. Use time-stop to prevent disasters like tea spilled on books or fairies breaking vases. At the end of they day you're evaluated on your performance.

Ghost Pirate Ship Quest
You're a ghost pirate ship on the high seas. Though your crew is dead and gone you must fill your need to pillage & plunder for loots and riches. Your immediate goal is to wreck another ship and force their dead to become your new zombie/skeleton crew. The quest would focus on your adventures & the ships you meet on the mystical high seas and what islands and ships you spookily plunder for to increase your hoard of grand treasure.

Blind Love Quest
It's a romance quest but none of the waifus/husbandos ever get described physically. Attractiveness, physical traits (barring obvious shit like missing limbs or long/short hair once close enough to touch it) all mysteries. All you have to go on is the sound of another's voice: gruff, silky, suave, shrill, so on and so forth. A character's outward (unpleasant) appearance can be played for drama, as an idea. Have fun exploring usual romance themes in a new context!

Bravosi Repoman Quest
The Iron Bank of Bravos. This ancient institution has loaned out money and assets for centuries now to those who need it, giving the funds needed to pursue their ambitions. This mutually beneficial agreement has alllowed for many a business, kingdom, and investment to propser. Many a man owe his status due to the bank's intervention.

Red Bullet Quest
You run/work for a government-funded agency that hunts down monsters/abnormals in a post-apocalyptic, mostly deserted world. Vestiges of human population hold out in downtown areas of former megapolises.

Episodic Adventure Quest
Every day you wake up, go to the Bored Adventurer's Board, accept a quest, complete it, then spend your quest reward money on beer/hookers/blow/books/weapons. Each adventure is self contained in a single thread, apart from big multi-part quests (Hunt the Dragon, Kill the Lich) that occur over two or more threads.
The companions you meet on certain quests may help you with group quests later. There also might be reoccurring bandit gangs? And skill trees?

Kibbutz Overseer Quest
Set in a pulpy pre-World War II (and continuing to a pulpy Cold War) where almost every faction has access to some form of superscientific and supernatural stuff (think Schteel's Liberty Quest). You are a Zionist in charge of managing a heavily defended hyper-efficent collective farm. Try to keep everyone alive and well (enough) while producing as much food as you can. Weizmann has been creating all sorts of supercrops (some of which are man-eating). Avalibility of tech, what kind of faction that will attack your facility, price per unit (both export and import), all up to you and who you side with (for the moment).

Research Overseer Quest
Set in an alternate reality pulpy pre-World War II world where almost every faction has access to some form of superscientific or supernatural stuff (think Schteel's Liberty or Hellboy). You are a Scientist in charge of managing a group of researchers. You are on the leading edge of an arms race that spans the globe.
-Superweapons everywhere are fun.
-Variable factors: avalibility of tech, what kind of faction will attack your facility, how superscience affects the world economy.

Siphon Quest
You are a vampire. Well, not exactly a vampire in the traditional sense: for one, you're not 'a creature of the night'. You don't turn into a bat. But you do feed on other people. Their emotions, to be exact. It doesn't really matter to you whether they're elated or despairing: what matters is the strength of the emotion that you can feed off of. Once you've 'devoured' someone's emotions, they can never experience that emotion again.
It's up to the collective to decide whether you leave in your wake an army of emotionally defunct people, or devour all the sadness in the world. Making everyone happier, one person at a time. Might be competing siphons around, so be careful!

Imouto Quest
Your big brother can be such a dummy sometimes, but he loves you all the same. Ever since mom and dad died he's done his level best to make sure you had enough to eat and good clothes to wear. Everyday seeing you off to school before going to school himself. He leaves school early to work, the money you've been getting from relatives isn't quite enough to get by on. This year, though, he'll be out of school and he'll be working full time and saving up for university! So tonight, you are going to do something super nice by making your Onichan dinner. You're even going to bake him a cake, you just need to move a chair so you can get to the high shelf in the cupboad...maybe a box to put on top of the chair too. There you go- OH NO! What are these *objects of questionable safety/objects of questionable morality* doing here? What have you gotten yourself into, big brother?
*Possible objects that start the conflict of this quest: Needles, Assorted Drugs, Pornography, Firearm, dildoes, firearms, tests with failing grades, cosplay, love letters, super hero outfit, extremely overdue bills, gambling debts, a human femur, a fairy trapped in a bottle, or a metric ton of pachinko balls.
-MC's yandere level may vary. (WE'RE SO YANGRY)

Sword Seller Quest
You run a shop where you sell swords. Sometimes you sell swords to sellswords who sail sell their swords. You've got plenty of business at your shop, but there's a rival shop that sells more swords than you do. And so, you've got to lurk in the deepest dungeons for the shiniest swords or provide reasonable wages to the most practiced of blacksmiths. The prince's birthday is coming up, and his father's getting him a sword. Will that sword be one of yours? Will you be the first ever sword seller to introduce the concept of an arms fair? Find out.

Sellsword Quest
MC was drafted into the military at a young age. His country had been at war for over 40 years and needed a constant stram of new bodies to throw at the front lines. After the war ends, both countries are somehow left with a large number of former soldier whose only marketable skills involve killing. Much like France after the Hundred Years' War. He is discharged from the military only to find his family's land had been confiscated by the nobility to help pay for the war. He, along with a lot of other former soldiers, becomes a sellsword.
-Low fantasy, swords, the works.
-Noble family that fell from grace.
-Drafted street urchin, whose reward was reallocated.

Kamen Rider: MIX Quest
You are event DJ Kanezawa Jane, you bring remixes and electronica to dance venues and perform live mixes of music tracks and your own vocals. One day, while packing up after a packed gig, an old man barrels into you while outside in the alleyway while you are loading up your van. He thrusts a loose armful of mostly unlabeled cassette tapes into your arms
He charges off, only to be run over by a car filled with strangely dressed masked men in suits and hats as he leaves the alley. A device is knocked clear of the old man, it looks like a walkman attached to an extending belt buckle which you pick up after if slides to a stop at your feet.
The strange men exit the car and inspect the man before they turn to you. Each takes out a strange looking mini MP3 player. In a flash of light and dissonant music they are suddenly clad in identical full body armor. They scream at you, and the sonic force knocks you to your back, scattering all but one of the tapes across the darkened alleyway.
"Use the belt! Use the tape! The soul of an artist and the soul of the warrior are the only way to survive!" cries the old man with what could well be his last breath.
You know his voice. He's a famous radio DJ you've listened to for years...
The last tape still in your hand, its labeled...Rider Mix.
The figures saunter closer, laughing and joking about "having fun with this one,"
You stand on shakey legs, slide the tape into the belt and hold it to your waist before instinct takes over...and the beat takes you.
"Henshin, PLAY!"
-
Your Rider form is timed, and the weapons/defenses/forms you have access to are based on the order of songs on your mix tape. Each tape can be set with a side A or side B, but you start out with a one sided tape, once its out you need to rewind it, flip it, or swap for another tape. Over the course of play, other rider systems will be found by both allies and enemies with different strengths and weaknesses.

Close your Eyes Quest
"Its waiting for you, that safe place. It may seem far away, but don't worry. Listen to the sound of my voice and come home,"
You jolt awake at your desk and find the office to be stagnant and rotting. The world is a twisting nightmare mirror of its former self, and you are the only person you can find, at first, who is still awake. As you explore the earth made nightmare, discover the fates of those who have succumb to these dreams, and avoid the nightmare creaches prowling about in the flesh, you must unearth the cause of these circumstances. Understand your new world and find a way to wake the sleepers who yet live while keeping yourself alive and awake.
Hurry, you haven't much time. If you let your eyes close...it might as well be the earth's end.

and with that the suggestion box and the suggestion vault have been lain before you.

I like this one, only pulling everything that is Star Wars and converting it to actual fantasy. So, basically, normal fantasy.

>Damned Death, Damned Devil Quest

Oh fuck I didn't think I'd still be on the hook for this. Maybe I should try it on a season by season run?

I've been meaning to run Sunrise Society Quest which I also am on the hook for.
>>
>>46539217
Speaking of quest ideas that gutted and then never run...

I've read the links in the pastebin. After tonight at midnight, I'm done full-time classes and studying. My job is part time. The time is right for me to finally take a crack at running my first quest.

I'd like to run a quest set in the same setting as the web serial Worm. Essentially a psuedo-realistic approach to a supers setting, but everyone still runs around in masks and costumes because it's "what you do." The protagonist arrived in Rain City a week or so ago after being "politely" shunted out by his parents to go get an education, leaving him the summer to get settled and find a job. Finally out of savings after a weeklong bender, the bohemian youth decides its time to find employment. Expect street-level shenanigans, gang fights, club nights, and workplace drama.

Thoughts? I've got most of the primary and secondary characters pretty well established, and enough plot to probably last at least 3 threads so far, though with the vagaries of fate being what they are that could mean pretty little.

>>46540667
Maybe try a Gamefinder thread?

I loved the series all the way through, but the first few arcs were objectively the best.

Sure they were gritty in places, but they weren't so incredibly loaded down with constant despair and doom. The fight against Bakuda was the perfect touch of "oh shit everythings going to fall apart."
>>
>>46542575

Leviathan was cool, though I feel like after that it was a different series altogether. How do you guys handle mooks in quests?

I don't want to write "You see a bunch of generic guys" but instead make each of them unique.
However it's a lot of work that you do only to throw it out the window.
>>
>>46542998
Mooks are mooks. You don't care about them, the players don't care about them, put zero effort into them.
>>
>>46542998
I find a strange amount of gratification in having a developed character or a character that was meant to eventually become a developed one to just be killed by the players. As a QM, that's a huge part of what Quests are all about for me. When the players express their freedom, I don't try to do anything to supplant it. If they want to kill someone, they can try. If they don't want to kill someone, they don't have to. I don't know why, but it feels really good to let them do that and simply roll with it. That's probably just me, though!
>>
>>46542998

Actually, I have a lot to say about that.

I generally don't use mooks a lot. What I do is that for each NPC that the MC can easily kill, I give him a unique gimmick. More, I don't use more than a handful, so each guy has a chance to personalize himself.

It helps that my Quest is one where each character is very distinctive, so everyone gets a chance to use their specific 'gimmick', be it pyrokinesis, different kinds of swords, so kind of environmental trick and so on.

Don't do what LNs do and have the protagonist fight a lot of faceless guys in hoods. In Quests, you have an unlimited budget. Little things like the clothes they're wearing and they way they react to your attacks makes things interesting. (See Finn versus TR8R.)
>>
>>46543158
K-king?

But having "dudes in hoods" is not even an option for me.

I had guys in uniforms up until now but now every single character will be a literal monster so that's why I asked for advice since I have to make them all unique and easily identifiable.

I was just wondering if there is an easy way to do it
>>
>>46543282

Well, monsters all act differently. Think of an identifying theme (i.e. Terrible, ravenous, many-eyed, massive) and work from there.

"My Daughter, the Superhero"

Shaping the life of a superhero, giving her support and a loving home (or failing at that), protecting her for everything that doesn't involve lifting cars and throwing them at each other doesn't sound like "no power to do anything". Plus you know, your daughter is a superhero. And she loves you.

What level of narrative control is too much control?

What I mean is-I have an idea for a quest. But it's not like the open-ended hooks you see around here, like the (literally) exemplary "young dragoon has to get his first dragon". It's got characters mapped out, with all their relationships and motivations; it's based on mysteries and reveals, so it's got those pre-made; and it's got a general ending, although the players can determine which is the "true" end.

Is this too rail-roady? I have no idea what works well in quests, and what doesn't.
>>

Questmaster Quest

Yes I know it already happened, but it should've never ran.
>>
>>46545787
Depends on what you want, really.

Go for the story you want to tell, especially if you've got everything mapped out. Play it like an rpg; if the players stick to the tracks, do what's on schedule, but if they veer off the tracks make sure there's something between there and the next station. Just make sure not go go like "no you can't do that because the plot says you can't" unless it's something absolutely retarded.

If it's absolutely retarded give them a few chances to not be retarded before you just throw away the script and take the crazy train right off a cliff

They are not mine, they are the pitches once made in the QTG and spookies of old that were added as suggestions to the QM Cabal Suggestion Box. The best were sequested, free from deletion by roaming trolls, away in the vault where no edit function was present to the public at large.

However I freely admit to a few of the ideas in that list being mine.

>>46540608
It's best to
1. Think about how the crime you are investigating would have been carried out
2. Consider what clues would logically be left behind
3. Let the players surprise you with their ingenuity.

What's nice about refereed RPGs is that the Ref can adjust the situation based on player feedback rather than having to try to anticipate every single possible outcome the way a PC RPG programmer has to.

William Walker is a young man at the age of 21 and is one of the youngest Knights of his generation. He's not a prodigy of any sort nor does he have any political advantage to his name. He gained his title through hard work and dedication. As his first assignment as a Knight, he's partnered up with a seasoned Knight-Captain named Marcus Haymitch and follows his investigation of a band of mercenaries who has ties with the Mexican Alchemy Cartel and has apparently started a business of their own on American soil. There's even rumors flying around that they've started to use their own products, but no evidence to that has yet to surface. Haymitch knows the man leading the gang, but it's your job is to find out who he's running the show with and from where, report back to Washington, and then the Hunters will take over.

Walker have been forewarned that the Knight-Captain has a grudge against the men he's seeking and will stop at nothing short of vengeance. The only reason he's part of this investigation is due to his local contacts and the fact that he has spent his last 15 years of service hunting the man said to lead this gang, John Shepard. He knows more about him and his gang than anyone else in the Order. However, once the two of you arrive to the west, the situation takes a turn for the worse and you find yourself unable to return to Washington until the gang has been dealt with.

A quest set a fantasy Wild West, with everything that comes with and some more. One of the major differences is, there are no guns. Only swords and medieval weapons. There's no shootouts, there's only sword fights.
>>
>>46547369
To me, one of the big draws of the Wild West, especially the Spaghetti -- Mexican -- West, is the seedy characters. The lowlifes, the desperados trying to make ends meet, the poor bastards running life along a knife-edge. To me, it'd be more engaging if you dropped the knight thing, made it about the cartels. Maybe you're just an inside man working for a competing cartel, maybe you just need to pay off a debt to a mysterious figure from the Old Country. But don't make us noble, in name at least. [Another thing -- why would the US have "knights" anyway? That's a decidedly anti-Republican European thing.]

I'd also personally do away with Haymitch. He just seems to get in the way of the Protagonist Protagonisting. If we're going to have a badass spotlight-stealer, let's *be* the badass spotlight-stealer -- even if we don't start out so badass. Either way, I'm not sure what Haymitch adds to the quest, and he sort-of seems like he'd only constrain it.

I'm also not certain what the MC is meant to *do*. Just...wander in and generically investigate? If you've got a big plot behind this that's going to get triggered early on, I guess I can get it.
>>
>>46548018

I guess it'd be the buddy-cop / older mentor thing. I could see it working if it's handled well.
>>
>enjoy non-textual entertainment for a while
>come back and look at quests I want to run
Ffffffuck.

I don't think there's any way I can, in text, capture the weird alien feeling of exploring and not knowing the local languages and all that.
>>
>>46548018
I find it more entertaining to see if a noble MC will remain noble and just or be shaped by the violence around him. Nature or Nurture.

Haymitch is the key to the plot moving forward, since he knows the local people and he already has a few leads. It will start by following his leads and as you do, you'll discover other leads and eventually the spotlight will fall on the MC more and more will having Haymitch there as your partner.

The MC is supposed to investigate, follow leads, ask questions, gain the local Captains trust etc. Taking steps towards finding and dealing with the gang and its leaders.

That's what I'm worried about. The mentor's meant to -- mentor. To guide. Excellent device in a novel, allowing you to control the plot -- but that kind of control isn't what you necessarily want in a quest. At least, not so obviously.

The relationship the other way around could work very well, though. Having to mentor a young, green-eared newbie as a grizzled bastard. Trying to stop him from getting himself killed.
>>46548173
I can dig the corruption angle, although I still think the strength of these settings is the desperation. A torn piece of scum realising he's got to do the right thing...but that is just my preferences.

I'm still not a huge fan of starting out playing second fiddle. An inside guy -- an everyone's man, a guy who knows everybody in [X god forsaken town] and is affiliated to the AMERICAN KNIGHTS could fulfil the same role of being a hub of starting leads, without being a major leading character himself.

What exactly are you investigating? The mercenary gang in general? I'd make it more focused, personally: "the mercenaries have been associated with the distribution of a new kind of drug linked with a string of low-level atrocities, we need to investigate just what the fuck this drug is, how it's causing the atrocities, and who created it" gives more direction than "they're using some new stuff and they're in AMERICA, we need to see...them". I'm kind of assuming you've got a hook-behind-the-hook kind of deal. I'd start with that, myself -- if that's too spoilerrific, then a bait hook that at least gives more focus.

>Because muh knights.
I'm as big a fan of "if it's cool, it's cool" as the next fa/tg/uy, but you could really make this cool by thinking the swords!world through. Stuff like hedge knight associations doing quasi-legal shady shit, roughing up that bastard the grocer because he always gives me a dirty look when I buy cucumbers there and doing hits on abusive husbands. Or competing religious knightly orders, or anything.

Worked for Gotham. The grizzled guy provides exposition that the main character can't know because the players don't know it. Unless you're planning on copious navelgazing bullshit where the PC keeps remembering stuff as soon as it's relevant you need to have the information come from somewhere.

You also get the conflict from trying to learn from a guy that's clearly wrong about a lot of things.
>>
>>46548480
If you keep the initiative on the protagonist and his players, I don't have a problem. Making him an opponent himself is definitely a way to do that. But a guy who furthers the plot all by himself...I personally wouldn't do it.

Exposition *can* be done in more ways than "As you know.../I should tell you..." or "you suddenly remember that...".

Don't play it myself but I seem to recall an argument about in the General a week or so ago. Might be right.
Then again, Quests becoming saltier as they go on is just nature. The longer the Quest the more decisions you vote on. And every single voting decision has a small but not impossible chance for a dude to get impossibly salty over but not drop the Quest itself. So as the Quest goes on the number of salty hanger-ons increases.

When it comes to Sith, it's more fun to start at the beginning and follow his powertrip, like SAQ did to certain degrees. However, Jedi knights aren't about becoming more and more powerful, it's more about doing the right thing and heroic stuff.

So do seasoned jedi knight so the main character isn't a blank page and it has the opportunity to be both action and socially-oriented instead of just being the latter as it would be for most padawans outside of training.

I'm open to suggestions, but the start will be on Kamino and from there, I'm considering making it episodic with 3-6 threads per planetary battle/missions with references to past battles and other events throughout the Clone wars.

It's either that or have the ARC Trooper MC hunt down Republic traitors and Key Federation figures who might leak or has classified information in solo-missions in both cities and on planets currently embroiled in a war with the occasional appearance and co-operations with Jedi Knights, Clone Commando squads, or Local rebels against the invading CIS forces.

Well it apparently has a larger clip than a DC-15a, which has the capacity of 50 rounds per charge pack (with a capacity of 500 depending on the strength of the power setting of the weapon), so hopefully that answers your question. It might have about the same amount of rounds in a clip similar to that of a DC-17m or it might have more or less, but definitely more than 50 per clip?
