The skeleton is the only part of you that will remain on this planet for a very long period of time after your death. They are necessary for human life, but are only seen after that life is gone. There's the obvious reality-defying aspect of a skeleton moving on its own, especially at the point where muscles and the brain are completely gone.
Many times they're seen simply falling apart and reconstructing themselves, sometimes from parts of other skeletons. Unrelenting avatars of death which are themselves somehow immortal.
Basically:
They're more interesting dead than alive.
