How the fuck do demiplanes work?

Essentially, they're all closed systems, so how would foliage, weather, and populations of animal life function inside?

This thread is also for general planar discussion. Post your favorite planes, etc.

Yeah they're pretty complicated, which is why you need to be a particularly fancy wizard to make them happen.

Also, Elemental Demiplane of Gang Violence is the best. In my setting it's a sub-plane of Ysgard, so the entire plane is just people gunning each other down forever.

How deadly is the demiplane of salt compared to other demiplanes exactly? I would think anything anti water would kill you right quick.

The same way using a time stop doesn't freeze you in a solid mass of air but will block you from lifting some dude sword.

Magic dear anon. Magic.

This. Just call it "magic" and enjoy it. If you don't, if you try to work out "how it works" you'll extrapolate all the way out to "how does a demiplane hold back cosmic radiation without a circulating liquid core to its planet?" and you won't be having any fun. Just enjoy the wonderment of "magic".

>How the fuck do demiplanes work?
Short answer: has already been answered several times in this thread.

Long answer: Depends on your edition, but since I know 2E best, that's what I'm going to tell you about.

In the AD&D 2E multiverse, the Ethereal Plane is situated between the Elemental, or Inner Planes, and the Prime Material Plane (where most of the Earth-like worlds and settings are located). The Ethereal is described as "the realm of what might exist", and people who hang out there know that weird things spontaneously come into existence all the time on the Ethereal. Most of these things fade back into the misty soup that comprises the plane, but sometimes they stick around forever. It seems likely that the Elemental Planes are the forge/furnace/oven in which the primordial soup gets cooked, and every once in a while it births a seed that eventually grows into another Prime Material world.

However, the Ethereal being what it is, wizards have realized that its nature makes the creation of demiplanes really easy. It's like the Plane of Play-Doh.

Now, for what you asked earlier, about how they "work" in terms of foliage, weather, etc., all of those things are just Ethereal shadow-beings. They might look, feel, smell and act like normal animals, but they're just 3D renderings of what those animals actually are. The rain you're feeling isn't actual rain (but you can drink it and be sated).

There's a spell in the Planescape splatbook A Guide to the Ethereal Plane called (IIRC) "Demiplane Seed" which lets you create your own demiplane. Its size depends on what level the caster is, and after they die, it slowly evaporates from the outside edge inward until the whole thing is just soupy mist again.

Demiplanes are just planes that are directly embedded into the Astral Plane. They are closed systems with certain specifications. If a megawizard can make his own pocket dimension, he can make it bright and with some dirt and water and shit, mang.

Not a true closed system.
>>
If the other "infinite" planes are supposed to be alternate universes, why don't they have true topography? Like, why does the Elemental Plane of Fire have planets of magma, obsidian, fire, etc. in a great aether of gasses; or the Elemental Plane of Air have balls of various gaseous elements in different states orbiting never-ending tornadoes?

I thought the Inner Planes were just hanging out in the Ethereal like the Outer ones are encompassed by the Astral.

The thing inwards from the Ethereal is the Plane of Time.

Light gets in, you autist.

A demiplane can only work if "a wizard did it".

THE SAME WAY THEY DO IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM WHICH TECHNICALLY IS A CLOSED SYSTEM TOO

They aren't though, not really.

Elemental planes and Worlds (Feywild, Mechanus, Shadow Realm, etc.. ) exists as parallel worlds that satellite their home planet on an ethereal dimension: simultaneously physical and non-physical.

The "home planet" of these demiplanes acts as essentially the SUN for these ethereal worlds providing all the necessary energy and material in the form of magical nonsense produced by the collective spiritual consciousness of said physical world. Actual 'real things' like Plants, Animals, People, Bacteria, etc.. However are constantly being introduced and reintroduced through either naturally or artificially occurring portals.

The basic elemental planes of fire, earth, air and water come complimentary to every planet regardless of whether or not it has life. Traditional planets have the balance we're familiar with, but more obscure or extreme planets such as gas giants or ice worlds might one elemental plane more dominant than another.

The "feywild" (or your worlds equivalent) is entirely reliant on the past and present biodiversity of a world's biosphere. A planet does not need to have sapient life to have a feywild- the ethereal world/dimension can be created by something as simple as algae.

More esoteric or anthromorphised "planes" however are entirely the byproduct of a world's sapient beings, their culture and their collective conscious. This can produce a wild variety of elemental planes such as machine or food- qualities based upon what a species society values, covets or fears.

Magic, plus different laws of physics. Yes, even if they're overly specific laws.

I had an idea for a setting where the world was nearly ruined because people went nuts trying to create their own demi-planes for any number of reasons.

As a result, monsters starting pouring into the world through various unregulated demi planes which facilitated a world wide organization to train individuals who would go in and deal with monsters born out of them and to either permanetly close down or regulate pre-existing demi-planes. Some are stable and can still be used while others are created at random which results in various monsters being made. More often than not this can also lead to various riches in the forms of strange and exotic materials as well as treasure

That sounds pretty kickass anon. I'm stealing the shit out of this. Thanks!

>>46324432
I'm working on a modern magic setting where magic leaks out into the world from hundreds of thousands of little demiplanes as the spells holding magic back fail.
It used to be one huge demiplane that used to be part of the prime material, but it got separated and shattered by a mage war, and then sealed off by traitors.
