Second, get the core books of fifth ed, that would be the Players Manual, Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual. Make sure you have enough dice for everyone, even if it's just one set. Someone has to be Dungeon Master, so that person should read that guide. Everyone should have read the Player's Manual.
Go from there.

You can buy the 5e starter set for something like $20, and it has everything you need to get started.

Beginner's rules for the first few levels of play, a prewritten adventure designed to help you learn the game, character sheets, and a set of dice.
You can also download the full books from the 5e General thread, and ask for any advice you might need from there as well.

There's also this site to help beginning players.

You need to go to gurpsgen, download all the PDFs. Have a read through the basic books and Dungeon Fantasy, those will give you the rules.

Any questions, go ahead and ask them there.

You don't necessarily want D&D. I'm not saying you necessarily don't want it either--the current edition (5th) is one of the more approachable ones--but there are far simpler games out there, and unless you specifically want D&D, you should consider other options as well. Let me plug Barbarians of Lemuria as a good choice (see pic). Also, you might want to consider starting really simple at first and trying a game that's just a few pages, like Risus, at least until you get your bearings.

>Barbarians of Lemuria,Mythic Edition (current edition) -- https://www.mediafire.com/folder/7llc83r2xf8bg/Barbarians_of_Lemuria_-_Mythic_Edition

>Barbarians of Lemuria, Legendary Edition (earlier edition, fewer details & more minimalist presentation makes it even easier to learn, but the rules aren't as refined) -- http://www.mediafire.com/download/p5w885sa9a869ma/Barbarians+Of+Lemuria+-+Legendary+Edition.pdf

>Barbarians of Lemuria, House Rules / Patches for Legendary Edition (if you want the bare bones minimalism of Legendary, but with the rules tightened up a bit) -- https://mega.co.nz/#F!CtQR2bST!y_awB-GHCiL3CdK4iLCV7A

And here's Risus.

Another option would be to use the starter rules for a bigger game. Savage Worlds is rules-medium, which is roughly where I'd put the current edition of D&D, but if you just use the quick start rules, it's a good deal simpler than that (and you can always expand to the regular rules--Deluxe or Explorer's Deluxe: different formats of the same rule set--when you're ready).

But if D&D is what you want, the trimmed down basic rules for the current edition (5e) can be downloaded for free, and that's a pretty good place to start. I mean, it's still close to 200 pages of material, and you can always upgrade once you've got a handle on that (the core books are the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual).

There's also the starter set you see in the pic here, which is designed to... well.. start you out. I don't have any personal experience with it, so I can't really comment on it beyond that.

1. What you need.
5e starter set
http://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Starter-Set-Roleplaying/dp/0786965592/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1458687861&sr=8-2&keywords=d%26d+5th+edition+starter+set

Enough dice for each player. I recommend just throwing down twenty bucks on this, since it has something like fourteen sets of the seven die you need, so even groups of six players can each get two sets of dice (though, while some sets will be cool, a lot will be ugly).
http://www.amazon.com/Wiz-Dice-Random-Polyhedral-Multiple/dp/B009R6J8RY/ref=pd_sim_21_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=517E5LB2aCL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=01D2WDYFWDD8RTH3ZP9R

And that's about it for beginners. If you want to continue after that, you should buy the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide, or download the pdfs.

2. What to do.
Select one person to be the Dungeon Master. He reads all the instructions the starter set provides, along with the adventure. The Dungeon Master follows the instructions, and gives each player what they need to read in order to play the game. It's best for the DM to read everything before hand, and to lead the players through the basics of the rules, and then to get into the nitty gritty of the details during play as they come up. It's fine and expected for everyone to make rules mistakes, but as long as everyone tries to have fun, it's really easy to have a great night, since it's really just a sort of "advanced" board game.

What the fuck is wrong with you? I don't mind GURPS, but it is NOT the system that you suggest to brand new players who have never gamed before, and who don't have a skilled GM to help them get started.
>>

Depends on the setting.

I'm honestly not too big on Risus, I prefer d6 lite, they're both good stuff though seeing as they're free. But if you go with d6 lite, it's basically DnD but extremely stripped down, such that you'd also need to provide a setting, but that can be as simple as `you`re in a village and you`ve just been hired to slay the dragon``

Don't be too harsh on the guy. I kind of get a "Gil" feeling from the GURPS players whenever they see a new group of players interested in roleplaying games, and they inevitably go to the other more polished and accessible ones.

Christ are all gurps players retards.

I'm not a D&D guy myself but fuck you.

Anyway OP as
>>46187700
mentioned pick up the starter set. It's pretty good for what it is. Afterward you can pick up the Players Handbook, Dungeons Master's Guide and Monster Manual, or if you can simply flip through the SRD on the official site which combines all three books into one (not exactly sure how it's organized but its all there for free)
