WoTC confirmed for misandrists.
>>
the artist for sorin has done good arts in the past, like elspeth sun's champion
don't know why they just phoned it in this time
>>
They look like they could have been done by the same artist at the resolution that you posted them at.

Okay, pop quiz, what's one thing Elspeth has that Sorin doesn't?
Now reread the last word of OP.

Well, "cool girls don't look at explosions" hardly qualifies as exquisite.
But yeah, Sorin still looks worse in comparison.
>>
>>46147677
Honestly, it looks like they tried going with an old-ass fantasy novel look with Sorin, and succeeded in doing so.
Alternatively, they're trying to make him look less like Sephiroth.

Why would they do that? Pretty boys like Seph bring in the female fanbase Wizards desperately wants to build. I mean look at him.
>>
>>46147677
It's not so much that Nahiri's art is good, it's just that Sorin's is really that shit. I mean he looks like a wooden statue with a scowl carved into its face.
>>
>>46147876
>But that face. Those shoulders. Those ... breasts.
Anon, have you considered, that you might be, in fact, heterosexual?
>>
>>46147677
Eric Deschamps usually produces pretty good art, and he have done alot of mtg cards. This Sorin is probably one of his worst piece, certainly the worst Sorin out of all Sorin planeswalker cards. That body and the body armor looked weird. I hope it looked better when we see the real card.
>>
>>46147677
I actually like Sorin better. The other one looks like it's the wrong colors. Nahiri doesn't look R/W to me.
>>
>>46147677
They're both shit. Nahiri looks retarded and has that stupid smug half-grin thing going on. Sorin's art is retarded for like a dozen reasons, all of which people have mentioned above.

Eric Deschamps is like a coin toss, man. Sometimes he puts out solid work and sometimes it's just kind of bland.
http://magiccards.info/query?q=a%3A%22eric+deschamps%22&v=scan&s=cname
I mean, it's not like he's incapable of good art, just sometimes experimentation goes wrong. If anything I think Sorin would look fine if it wasn't for all the empty space in the background which just make Sorin the only real focus. With New Nahiri you have the destroyed Markov Manor. I don't know what the shit I'm supposed to be seeing behind Sorin.

The blownout Helvault
>>
>>46151257
That's some shitty positioning. I thought it was like some weird Ugin horn shape rock. I dunno, I think if the background was done better the art for Sorin wouldn't be so much of an issue.

Also it feels like there's two different sourced for moonlight which is also throwing me off.
>>

>stupid smug half-grin
THANK YOU, I hate that face.
Also, wizards should just be tracing over yoshitaka amano's art for elric, it would make a way better sorin.

Wizards is known to awkwardly shoehorn in "diversity" to MTG lore, but this isn't an example of it.

Both arts are good, Sorin actually looks like an ancient vampire lord rather than a pretty boy this time around.

A Planeswalker comes into play with a number of counters (called Loyalty counters) equal to the number on the lower right.
Each turn, including the turn you played it, you can use one of the abilities, adding or subtracting the number of counters indicated, though you may only subtract counters if you have at least that many. For example - on the turn Nahiri the Harbinger comes out, you can either use her +2 ability (discard then draw) to put her at 6 counters, OR use her -2 ability (exiling stuff) to put her at 2, but not her -8 since she only has 4 total. You'd have to use her +2 twice in order to use the -8.
If a Planeswalker has 0 Loyalty counters on it, it's put into the graveyard. A player can attack a planeswalker as if it were a player (and has to declare which creatures are attacking you and which are attacking planeswalkers you control), but you may have your creatures block for planeswalkers you control. Any amount of damage dealt to a planeswalker removes an equal number of loyalty counters.
If you would deal damage outside of combat to a player (via say, a Lightning Bolt), you may redirect the damage to a planewalker they control.

First time I saw the new Sorin art on the spoiled Booster pack I was disappointed.
Same goes for Jace's new PW art. They should have just used the Unhooded version that they use as banner art on the MTG homepage.
Speaking of Deschamps. I remember admiring the art he did for the Duel Decks Venser and the FTV 20 Venser.

that's not the problem. we can have an art of sorin being ugly, that's fine. planeswalkers look different in their different arts ALL the time. this art is just a literal pile of trash, AND sorin is ugly in it. his stance, the background, just him himself, everything fucking about it is stupid. i don't think there is a single art that is just objectively shit on a single other planeswalker.

compare, for the sake of argument, chandra fire of kaladesh. while the design of the image is a poor choice because the focus of the image ends up being some stupid boats and oars and shit in the foreground instead of chandra, that doesn't change the fact that the art itself is done well. it looks like something. even if that something is a stupid fucking boat and some oars. just by virtue of how SHIT this new sorin art is I rank it 1 / chandra fire of boat city.

The weird thing about Gideon's appearance is that when we first saw him we didn't know exactly where he actually was from, but he looked like someone who would have fit right in at home in Bant or one of the other generic fantasy worlds of MtG. We know for certain though that his home wasn't originally intended to be Theros because in the original backstory we had it was stated that his home plane had been destroyed - possibly because of him.

Wether they knew they wanted him to be native to Theros before they started to change his appearance is unclear, but it is rather insulting when WotC's claims that it isn't a retcon - that Gideon was always meant to look mediterranean and that the first art was a mistake. If he was, why was and still is his hair long and straight when that's not a look we see on any other Therosians? We even see that his hair was curly before his spark ignited on Kytheon. Now, sometimes people's hair change dramatically as they grow older, my own has gone from blonde and curly to dark brown and wavy from when I was a child to now, but why then is Gideon the only one on Theros who has experienced that change? Shouldn't we see at least some other older Therosian men with long and straight hair?

It's especially insulting because Gideon's original appearance was that of a caucasian male with a tan. That's not something unheard of, or even uncommon, in Greece. But Wizards obviously think that Greeks look like Mexicans because it's located in the south of its continent.

It's easier to be taken out of fiction by something that does actually exist but doesn't follow the laws of reality. Sea monsters, vampires and zombies are fictional and as such register and fantastical elements by the brain. Black people are real, and when they turn up in a setting based heavily around 17th century Eastern Europe that's very jarring for a lot of people, just as it would be if caucasian Europeans showed up in a block based on sub-Saharan mythology.

But there were white people living in sub saharan africa, at some point, just as there were black people living in Europe in the 17th to 18th century. They were by no means a common site, but they weren't uncommon either.

I'm not even gonna say they had their own countries like the SJWs will. Merely that things like the slave trade, normal trade, colonization, and normal immigration resulted in black people living in or visiting European cities in small number.

Did you think there was some sort of wall around africa keeping the black people contained?

I've never denied that they're uncommon. That doesn't mean they weren't there. Your entire argument relies on the fallacious assumption that there was an invisibile black people repelling wall around europe during this time period, and therefore no black people should ever show up ever in a fantasy set loosely based on a modern canon depiction of horror in that time period.
>>

I dunno. Wizard's have been pretty good at not putting fantasy races where they don't belong the last few years. Innsitrad has no Elves or Goblins, for example, Tarkir had no Angels and so on, and so on.

I remember ten years ago or so when they said that Odyssey was a big mistake because it didn't give casual players new cards to put into their Elves decks, and that it would be almost impossible to release a set without Dragons or Angels in it.

>The sahara didn't stop white people from colonizing sub saharan africa during this time period
Yes, during the renaissance, not the medieval era. There's a reason all maps that existed before that time stopped at the Sahara. It was nearly impossible to traverse.

>it certainly wouldn't stop white people from bringing some darkies back with them.
We know for a fact that they did, because they showed off their discoveries to the Pope and the Kings that had funded their expeditions.

However, there was little to no reason for Eastern European countries to bother with that, because the entire point of the colonizations was to find a trade route to India and China that circumvented Ottoman tolls. Very relevant if you're Italy or Spain, not as relevant if you're Poland or Russia.

There were a lot of Turks in Eastern Europe at this time. There weren't a whole lot of black people.

Slavery was even outlawed in Europe at the time. It wasn't outlawed in the New World due to a technicality and when the European royalty tried to enforce it there as well they were opposed by a whole bunch of rich people who were now really fond of their slaves so they just left it.
>>
>>46156304

The Ottomans had trade partners as far South as Ethiopia and Somalia. If anything, that provides the perfect route for the occasional black to turn up in Eastern Europe.

The problem was, supposedly, that the picture when taken out of context looked very rapey. Now, logically, the people who saw that picture without knowing the context and caring enough about how it looked would not be the target audience of Wizards anyway, and it likely looked a lot worse than it actually was, because companies still aren't used to how fast things can go down on Twitter or Tumblr despite only a handful of people being involved in it.

Still, reasonably, the correct response from Wizards would have been to either apologize, promise nothing, and move on or just ignore it. But they didn't. What they did was promise to not have women be damsels in distress in their game again which is rather silly. Because not only is it rather insulting that you say something like that and still allow men to be put into positions of obvious weakness and need of rescure when your reason for allowing for banning women from being that depicted that way is equality, but also because it's completely dishonest. Women ARE still depicted in those positions in the game, it's just not as obvious that they are women.

And also, it could be said to very incosiderate of the people who do actually get off on DiD. It may seem silly, I know it does to me, but if the reason for showing scantly clad attractive males in the game is to attract heterosexual women and homosexual men to the game and I do think that's a reasonable of Wizard's to do then it should be equally reasonable for them have a few damsels in distress to appeal to that crowd.

>I wouldn't be shocked if there were occasional Slavs to be found in that region of Sub-Saharan Africa
You might think that, but it would prove nothing other than you being an idiot. For one, neither Europe nor Africa was considered a source of wealth during this time. The place everyone wanted to trade with was China. Secondly, Slavs weren't the ones colonizing the world because they had no practical way to do so. Thirdly, there was no point travelling to Ethiopia to trade there when the Turks already did the same thing and you could already trade through them. Considering that their tolls were great enough that it spurred on the Age of Discovery I dare say that it wouldn't have been profitable enough to send your own merchants through their lands.
>>
>>46163724
They get a few lines guiding them in a general direction, eventually more detailled if the card's art is especially important.
The guy could have just go for spiky bones coming out of his arms wich would have already be retarded giving the way the tiger attack. But he had to go for an elaborated design wich make it looks like a retarded Final Fantasy monster.

As people have pointed out, black people actually did appear in original Innistrad as well. It was less tacky then, I suppose, but it still feels kinda pointless. I don't have a problem with black or asian people showing up on a plane like Zendikar or Mirrodin, because fuck do I know how that world works, but it is jarring to me when they show up in blocks clearly and heavily inspired by actual European places and time periods. I don't know, maybe this is just my autism showing here, but I really can't stay immersed in a world that at once tells me 'oh, this is 16th century Eastern Europe but with vampires and zombies' and at the same time expects me to believe that the demographic is exactly the same as that of modern day America. It just fucking doesn't work.

It's also really hard for me to say this, because the people who are on my side of this are also generally not the people I would agree with on social issues, while the people who disagree with me are. Like, I'm all for equality, I want people regardless of the color of their skin or religious beliefs to have an equal chance in society to do what they want. I'm even one of those libertarian nutjobs who want completely open borders. But just as I would be distrurbed if Wizards put Scandinavians in a African mythology block I am taken out of it by them putting black people in Europeam mythology blocks.

The thing that a lot of people clearly doesn't understand is that depiction does not equal endoresement. You can have clearly racist characters in your story that aren't necessarily punished for their views while still not personally endorsing racism. And the lack of depcition does not equal endorsement of the former. Not having any caucasians show up in your African mythology block is not the same as being racist against caucasians. They just didn't belong in that particular setting.
