>>
>>46100624
I agree with you, actually. Though his games are good for a laugh, if nothing else, since you can do such strange shit in them and the plots are pure madness. It's like watching some neckbeard from /tg/ get executive power over something he knows nothing about, like actual game design, and seeing what sorts of insane autistic shit he'd do with said power, and the guarantee it'd be published no matter what. I mean the fucker put the chick he was banging into the game as a character, AND made her look like a slut and got a thumbs-up from the girl he was banging. I mean who else gets to DO shit like that? Absolute madman.

But yeah, as a "visionary gamemaker" he's overrated to high hell and back.
>>
>>46100755
Oh yeah, this thing. Four of any big gun is intimidating, of course. Needs support to keep infantry off of it unless LB-X have some kind of utility I didn't know about (which would not surprise me since an LB-X is basically a grapeshot cannon) but other than that, woe to any other tanks anywhere within 500m of this thing.

MFW apparently my tank actually is shitty even though I designed it to be at least decent
>>
>>46100826
Your tank suffers from the fact that tanks can't mount DHS, really. I think a regular PPC+GR combo would be better than the capp'd HPPC
>>
>>46100873
I suppose that's fair. I was mostly trying to design a sort of "mobile defense turret" that you just can't kill. I should stick with simpler concepts, I suppose. It's what I know.

Honestly it's probably held back a lot by the Hardened Armor. I could change it out or strip some off and put a missile system on it or something. The issue is that it can only PSR once every other turn, which is what the RAC was supposed to be for (sustained fire); that and crit-seeking if you like that kind of thing. I have an idea though... have this while I tinker.
>>
>>46100624
QFT. Pretty sure he's just on crack 24/7 but nobody else cares to stop his madness.
>>
>>46101233
Use a T-bolt 20 and ammo instead. Same damage/range, about the same weight with ammo, but indirect-fire capable and importantly able to fire every turn.
>>
>>46100873
I did toy with allowing Tanks to mount DHS, though they only get 5 free ones in the engine, and any heat not used is considered wasted for the purposes of construction, so it penalizes you for going for odd heat numbers. It turns energy tanks into something slightly more viable. Imagine a Schreck with 10 more tons of armor!

>>
>>46101291
T-bolts are good, and I like them, but I wasn't trying to design a massive Sheridan, but... eh, we'll see. At this point it's basically a new design anyway so I'll play around with it later.

I did something similar, except the ten engine HS stayed single, but vees could use the old prototype DHS from them very early sourcebooks (and now apparently one of those XTRO things) I think I had them take up slots like weapons, one slot per three sinks or something. It worked out alright, but it lead to a glut of what amounted to ERPPC Schrecks, which were kinda boring, so I stopped using it for campaigns

It was discussed a few weeks ago, that as much as that's entirely possible, only the most special of pilots had custom omni loadouts, and even they rarely did so.
Basically if it's not a standard omni configuration for a mech, it's not happening. As such, use for an engineer omni is valid.

Build around the very few things that can't be pod-mounted. I have a series of Omnis that are: a 5/8 Partial Wing 50T, a 6/9[12] MASC 60T, a 5/8 70T with AES, and a 2/3 100T with TSM Torso cockpit and lots of Armored components.

I keep going back to them, tweaking the configs to find that fine balance between optimized and interesting. Somehow I think they'll never really be done.

Pic not related, just a spinoff of the 70T one.

AoW came out two years after JHS '72, so the MD rules will be for MW3e/CBTRPG.
>>
>>46101871
So... what they already are?
>>
>>46102029
Wouldn't that make energy vees a lot better? It's only if you choose DHS; "normal" rules Vees would still get to use SHS if they want, with all the rules they already have. I dunno, it sounded like a good idea, but whatever, I'm no dev.
>>
>>46102029
Nah, I like vees being the last bastion of ballistics, and they have great purpose as low-BV filler in a force, which they would lose if they were as mass-efficient as mechs.
>>
>>46107169
>>46107008 here, I think, upon reflection, I agree with this. But I'm biased against high-BV Vees usually, and enjoy designing cheap ones, so maybe DHS on them is a bad/unnecessary idea.
>>
>>46106477
Cool. Also, AToW rules for BA are fucking terrifying. I decided to give my Sigma Zombie a customized Purifier for eating faces and just giving it a Vibro-Battle Claw means his attacks are at +9M AP, +9BD, and a +3 to Martial Arts. And he has a 16 STR on top of that.

Also, is 7 levels in Martial Arts too much?
>>
>>46107008

Well, vees should be better than mechs to begin with. Lower profile, better armor coverage, and motive systems less vulnerable to catastrophic failure (except, perhaps, in the case of hovers).

Honestly, the fundamental premise of Battletech is wrong, and it needs to be corrected, badly. Just because something is science fiction isn't a license to ignore reality.
>>
>>46107244
This is a debate I'm not willing to get into, honestly. You're free to think what you like about it, and are honestly correct, but it's all suspension of disbelief, rule of cool, and "for love of giant robots", and either you're cool with that or you aren't. In an ideal game, each motive type would have its niche, and the game would play as such, but the game's about 'Mechs, so they decided that 'Mechs got the special treatment. I'm sure there's games out there that cater to more well-balanced combined arms. You gotta love giant robots to give it a pass, I'll admit.

What can y'all tell me about Proto Mechs that Sarna dosen't? Also, why on earth would folks try to reduce the awesome psychological effects inherent in having them actually look like mythical beasts in their MWO style art reinterpretations?
>>
>>46109087

Not about tactics, it's about ability and bonuses.

SZMA training is written as being the most brutally effective in known space, with SZMA graduates coming out more skilled and psychologically hardened than the graduates of any other academy in the Sphere. Other states pattern their elite programs on the SZMA. Granted a certain amount of tactical rigidity that goes along with this, but their combat skills are supposed to be first-rate.

But due to codex creep and the >muh FedSuns effect, their training is better not just tactically but across the board.

>>46109154

The use horde tactics and a low per-unit BV (especially now that FSM is gone) to overpower the enemy. GreekFire has some good write-ups in the Fan Article section of the OF.

/btg/, I am confused, how exactly do Improved Jump Jets work? And what's the point of taking them over regular JJs if you're not going to add enough IJJs to surpass your walking speed? Are they necessary for Partial Wings?
>>
>>46115161
>/btg/, I am confused, how exactly do Improved Jump Jets work?
In character, or in game rules? Game rules they weigh twice as much, take twice as many crits, generate half the heat (round up, still min 3), and allow you to jump up to your running MP.

IC, here's the extract from TM:
>However, even as of his writing, scientists working for Phelan Kell’s exiled Wolf Clan were working on perfecting a more powerful jump jet system, designed to carry ’Mechs farther and with less heat build-up per jump. The first of these functionally improved jump jets finally reached the battlefields in 3069, and the specs were shared with the Lyrans, Draconis Combine, FedSuns and even ComStar—in the effort to provide any edge over Blakist assault forces.
>Curiously enough, the Crusader Wolves also fielded improved jump jets on some of their ’Mechs in 3069, with a few reportedly deployed in their offensives against Falcon-held worlds. This spontaneous appearance may have been the result of Watch agents in the Exiles’ midst, to which Khan Kell may or may not be turning a blind eye during the current crises.

>And what's the point of taking them over regular JJs if you're not going to add enough IJJs to surpass your walking speed?
You really need to be at least dipping into your run speed, or to somehow save enough heat with them that the weight disadvantage they give is equal to or less than the same mass in DHS (which will only happen on XXL engine using lights and mediums). Otherwise just use regular JJs.

>Are they necessary for Partial Wings?
They are not necessary for partial wings from either a rules perspective or a optimization perspective. There are situations where you want a partial wing instead of IJJs, there are situations where you want IJJs instead of a partial wing, and there are situations where you want both (ie: when you want to jump farther than you can run).

Hi /btg/, I'm working on a non-canon version of a mech regiment for an upcoming game. Due to the regiment's intended role, and somewhat due to its origin story, I'm thinking of having it be a speed-oriented formation of "cavalry" mechs (above average speed, less ammunition dependency, etc).

It's going to be from the Free Worlds League in the years just before the Jihad breaks out. What are some good lights, as well as fast mediums or fast heavies (5/8 I guess) that the Free Worlds make at that time?

And I intend them to be heavily combined arms, so I'd welcome recommendations on vehicles, air support and infantry types. I was considering heavy armor with anti-mech infantry to back the lighter mech forces up, maybe to act as anvil to their hammer or something.

It's a condition of the license. Either CGL (or whomever is producing BT) deals with it and keeps the canon established by Wizkids, or the lose the license and actually have to pay Hasbro a penalty for breaching said license.

question for the aerospace boys; how many Mule PWS would it take to kill a McKenna?
assuming that sufficient ASFs and ASF carriers are present on the PWS side to neutralize the McKenna's fighters and any carried by parasite craft, and that McKenna isn't carrying any PWS of it's own
>>
>>46131087

Just one.

The McKenna has no AMS defences of any kind.

The Mule-Q has 4 launchers that can sling Peacemaker missiles. Peacemakers do 1,000 damage. The most you need to kill a McKenna in a single hit is 440. There's a save or die check from a nuke hit as well but that's irrelevant on any WarShip that isn't a Leviathan II/III because nothing else can tank that much damage.
>>
>>46131566
hrm, good point.
so another question: On a one-way trip, WITHOUT fighter cover, how many mule PWS would you need to kill a McKenna?
>>
>>46132353

Still just one.

All you have to do is get one Peacemaker past the McKenna's defences.

It's for this reason I advocate using DSes like the Nagasawa, ASF Squadrons (with ASF that have Small Lasers or AMS), and Small Craft with AMS abilities to screen WarShips in my articles.

Most canon ships are highly vulnerable to nuclear attack. If that option is on the table you're in one-hit-kill territory on anything short of the Leviathan II/III (which can not just survive the raw damage of a Peacemaker but have enough AMS coverage to ignore them any way).

If you're using standard missile warheads the answer will be "lots more" since the McKenna is only taking 16-32 damage per turn max per enemy ship. The 32 is based on Bearings-Only launches being in play and everything hitting. Which is possible but not likely.

The McKenna meanwhile instagibs a Mule-Q with every bay other than its Naval Lasers, which will still badly damage a DS. The H-PPC bays are instant kills even on max bracketing.

You could get lucky with crits and render the McKenna virtually impotent if you get a lot of Sensor rolls or whatever from the missile spread by applying stupid high penalties but on damage alone? I wouldn't want to be commanding a flotilla with any less than 30 Mule-Qs, given you could very well lose half of them in a single broadside volley from the McKenna while inflicting minor damage in return.
>>
>>46132657
wouldn't ECM screening from the McKenna's DS be an issue for ensuring the peacemaker gets through?
>>46132353
I'd personally want to bring at least five in a nuclear situation just for redundancy.
also, the fighter screen MIGHT be an issue if it can get into range with the Mules before they get into missile range
>>
>>46132714

>wouldn't ECM screening from the McKenna's DS be an issue for ensuring the peacemaker gets through?

Depends on how high their ECM bubble penalties are.

If the DS crews and McKenna are generating shitty ECM bubbles (or you're playing without that advanced rule) then the TN's not going to be so high.

And even if it's an 11 or 12, you can still roll an 11 or 12.

>also, the fighter screen MIGHT be an issue if it can get into range with the Mules before they get into missile range

Killer Whales have a 50-hex range.
>>
>>46132769
I was thinking mostly about the fighters intercepting them on their way in, rather than once they were in engagement range with the Mckenna.
I guess it would depend on if they were on CAP or in the hangers
>>
>>46132786

A DS can run up a lot of speed if given time to accelerate, and 50 hexes is a lot of reach. If the Mule is deliberately being a sacrificial goat it could come in at a Velocity of 20 or more, with the McKenna just on the edge of its effective range, and throw the Peacemaker as a last-ditch effort.

Fighters can catch up pretty fast but their intercept window is small and their firepower may not be enough to stop the launch.

I tend to read the question as being a narrative one, as in "how many of these do I need that a victory is plausible and how would it be done in a story without resorting to Kai Allard-Liao level asspulls" than necessarily being all about game mechanics.

Just one. It flies in from the aft arc, launches a missile, gets a crit, hits the fuel, and the fuel explodes. Whether it's got a nuke is immaterial.

Yes, it's plausible. I played a WarShip scenario on Friday, and this happened to three of my ships on Turn 2 (reinforcements entering the board from a random edge put missiles up the tailpipes of a Liberator, Texas, and Nightlord, killing all three in the manner described). Fighting a force of paired heavy cruisers, paired battleships, and three Quixotes using a pair of Essexes, a SovSoy, and a smattering of small craft/assault ships was not a fun experience. It was, however, short.

For game mechanics, it requires generating an aft critical (via a missile crit or rolling boxcars on your to-hit roll, since missiles are unlikely to threshold), rolling a "2" for location, then confirming the critical on an 8+, then rolling a 10+ to see if the gas explodes.

>>
>>46147604
It's a function of how infantry weapons are converted to BT stats for infantry construction. The basic conversion is based on AP and BD values (both high for the MP Plasma), with significant bonuses for burst fire, explosive, splash, and incendiary weapons (MPP is splash and incendiary).

The Cappie Fiat comes in with those high AP and BD values (5 and 10), which beat man-pack (3 and 5) and heavy flamers (3 and 7) by a significant margin.

>>46148087
What's really messed up about those Fed-Barretts is the infantry in TRO 3085 appear to have been built using the pre-errata damage and BV values - they should be considerably more dangerous. That gun is way over the top for a standard infantry weapon.

their first battle was them taking a Thunderbolt and a Shad against a Hunchback and a Catapult on the two introbox maps
they won, though by the end the Thud was down both arms and the RT from one goddamn lucky hunchback, and the shad had been thoroughly sandblasted but still had all it's limbs attached
the shad managed to kill the Hunchback with a lucky gyro AC/5 crit to the back after the thud had thoroughly pounded it in melee, and the Thud managed to mission kill the Catapult by kicking a leg off, causing the pilot to fall over and pass out, followed by failing to wake up for the rest of the game.
since the Cat ended the game in good condition, I've decided to give it to them alongside their thud and shad for the merc campaign I'm gonna run for them after a few more trial games
