I am just painting my first figures and jesus christ I never realized how shaky my hands are. That, and how easy it is to accidentally touch a part of the model you didn't mean to when moving the brush. I'm sure that this stuff gets easier with time, but fuck my first models are going to have like 3 coats of each base color just to hid the fuck ups.

Lay off the cafeine, alcohol, sugar, anything that excites you really. Then brace your wrists together on the table.
It should help. Then practice, practice practice.
>>
>>46064938
Make sure your paint is thin so those fuckups dont pile up. Also, keep going. Muscle Memory is half the battle.
>>
>>46064938

Once you paint like 30 guys you'll get used to it and shaky miniatures and tiny details will become normal and easy. Or at least that's how many it took for me, but I have an art background.

Making sure you have a good brush helps too. Bad brushes will either be too thick or the thin ones will not have enough hair on them.

Enlighten us, anon, in the manner of our most blessed saint. We need evidence and testimonials.
>>
>>46065191

Not him but they are pretty sweet. The only problem is they come in a huge jar you will never use completely and they don't have any color so you have to prime and paint it yourself or mix paint into it.

I use Citadel texture because it's easier to use and more convenient with the color in it, but I use Vallejo sand paste for making soft sand desert bases because every Citadel texture past is the same fucking texture: hard sand with color. So jungle = hard sand. Desert = hard sand. Concrete = hard sand. Vallejo has actual different texture.
>>
>>46065197

Kolinsky sable is what you're looking for. A single size 0 will cover all your infantry and non-vehicle needs.

Raphael 8404 is the best brand but Winsor & Newton Series 7 is almost as good and far more popular. Da Vinci is also good. Rosemary is the budget brand without going into shit territory, but you can get a W&N, Da Vinci, or Raphael for $10-13 so why bother.

If you want, make it have the statline for an Artillery Gun (T7 W2) and center a Large Blast on it when it dies, causing all models caught in it to suffer a S4 AP5 hit with the Ignores Cover special rule. Models on the top part when it explodes scatter D6" in a random direction, then suffer a S8 AP3 hit and, if they survive, are reduced to WS1 BS1 and I1 until the beginning of their next player turn.

At least, that's what I'd do.

>>46064766

I'm working on a scratch-built Dark Apostle, and while I have already assembled a pretty solid Accursed Cozius (from like 8 different goddamn pieces, the thing should be a Daemon Weapon from how many times I've cut myself trying to cut, sculpt, and glue the goddamn thing together), but I am a little torn. I want (and have the resources) to do a very strong Tusks-style theme for the guy, with tusks and horns protruding from the pauldrons, head, and backpack unit, but I also want to do a human skin motif, with a robe carved from greenstuff in the shape of a screaming human face, with skulls hanging off the backpack, and the pauldrons covered to resemble human faces with greenstuff.

Which should I do? For clarification, I run a mono-Slaanesh list, but I'm trying to redesign my army style now that I've progressed skill-wise.
>>
>>46065261
Goddamn, they look great. Thanks mang
>>
>>46065454
Do many people just use these pastes, or do people usually put rocks and other things on them for more detail?
>>
>>46065669

Most people use cork or PVA glue + sand or various grade sand/pebble mix for basing. Or just straight flock.

A fair amount of people use texture paints since they mimic sand anyway and are more convenient/secure than glue + sand, plus easy to sculpt/landscape with. It's also easier to blend into the model.

However with paste you can't vary the mix or consistency of the texture like you could with different grades of sand fineness or mixing in different sized pebbles.
>>
>>46065669
I'm sure people do just use the pastes, but for most people, once they are over the threshold of 'actually basing your miniatures' instead of blank or just painted bases, they make a bit of effort.

>>
>>46065865

You can use an airbrush lazily and you can use pastes lazily, so yeah, they're both techniques you can use.

If you treat it as the be-all and end-all your shit will be tabletop standard and no better.
If you use it as part of a process, you can make stuff look really nice.
Using pastes does not preclude making a really nice looking base.

I hope you anons can help me with something. Do any of you know how I should go about painting a red hot metal effect on my models? Cause I want to make power swords for my imperial guard that look like they could have just been pulled out of a forge red hot color. Should I start by priming in grey then base coat a dark red and then shade in brighter and more yellowish reds until along the spine of the blade is bright yellow or do I have the wrong idea on how to do this? Any advice would be helpful.
>>
>>46066357
Try to get the colors to overlap a little, making a smoother transition from one band to the next.
>>
>>46066472
Do you mean while they are still wet or do I let each shade dry then paint the next? Also how many shades do you think I should use? I was thinking like 3 a dark red, a orange red and a yellow, which I then need to mix to get a shade in-between each for a total of 5 layers.

I saw a discussion on basing in the previous thread, and it made me realize how shitty my basing actually is.

I've just been gluing that same brown Army Painter gravel to my bases. Sometimes I throw a rock or some blood splatter on there. Is there any way I can fix this, or make it so these minis don't obviously suck compared to the rest of my army?

I'm away right now, so I don't have pics.
>>
>>46067171

The easiest way to fix it is to prime and paint over the army painter rocks. I'm pretty sure people gave tons of advice in the last thread like use less giant rocks and more sand.
>>
I started going through all my Dark Vengeance cultists that I never use and cut off all of their Chaos stars and stuff.

It's a tad unsettling how well they fit into an Inquisitor's warband.

Are we the baddies?
>>
>>46067209
I guess as long as the bases are generally the same color my minis shouldn't look too different.

So I'll need a brush-on primer, I suppose. I'm working with Necrons, so I want to do kind of a dusty, reddish terrain. Recommendations for colors or techniques?
>>
>>46067239
It's a pure, human skull shape!
>>
>>46067239

Your Inquisitor might be, yes.

You can tell who the lawful good Inquisitors are because their retinues are all super pious and uniformly garbed guys like acolytes priests and stormtroopers.
>>
>>46067242

Your Army Painter rocks are already brown and since you want to do Martian red, you may not need to paint at all. Go buy some red weathering pigment and coat your base until it's red, then seal it in.

Since the material you used is so bumpy, a brush on primer is probably going to be a bitch to get a complete coat on unless you water it down so it seeps into the cracks.
>>
>>46066725

not to be a dick but there really isn't a set for everything (unless you literally buy one of those sets that have every paint from the manufacturer). it depends what you're going to paint.
>>
Can someone redpill me real quick on mediums?

What sort should I use with regular paints? Recommended brands?

I asked before about wanting to do a blood effect, and was told I could mix a color with a gloss medium for it. How would that work?
>>
>>46067279
Does Vallejo produce those?

If I can get away with just using rocks and pigment I think I'll be good to go for the rest of my Crons. Though I may have to start painting the base before I glue the model to it. I've been gluing before painting just so I have a place to grip the model.
>>
>>46067300
>redpill

Ugh. All these are simple ass questions to google to.

Just buy any fucking acrylic medium and thin with it. Don't believe medium is any better than water? Then use your fucking shitty tap water and get subpar thinning. You won't know it's any worse since you've never used better, so it's nobody's loss but your own. The internet is totally trying to fool you into wasting your precious $3 that you'll never get back from buying acrylic medium that doesn't work! Why the fuck do you think those products are even still being sold? Because THEY FUCKING WORK

Just use Blood for the Blood God or Tamiya Clear Red mixed with Nuln Oil for blood. Why the fuck are you trying to mix your own blood effects from scratch when you're too stupid to even know how to use acrylic medium as a thinner?
>>
>>46067317

http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/en_US/rust-and-oil/family/19/88

Closest they have is some sort of reddish orange photo-realistic Mars surface. If you want bright fantasy Mars red you'll have to use MIG, Tamiya, or Forge World or something.
>>

You can do the librarian in his normal chapter colors and just paint parts of him blue. Like the arm, or shoulders, or psychic hood, or any combination of those.

Old GW pictures sometimes did the leg, even.

That's just one of the SW bluish greys blended into white and black.

It's going to look like generic blue SW unless you do the black blending.

Any Malifaux folks on? I got a metal Kirai box from a buddy of mine today as he expressed no interest in it and I saw converting potential out of the old kirai and needed some of the mooks that come in her box. The box came with an Ikiryo though which is a model that I think looks like garbage compared to the new plastic sculpt which is coming in on friday. Can you guys think of anything for Ressers that I might be able to run this as a proxy of or convert it into something cool?

How am I supposed to know which color to buy?

I want to paint the claws etc. Of my tyranids in a yellowish-green color (contrary to greyish white skin and dark purple carapace) but I can't just go off about how it looks on the bottle, can I?

I'm thinking about VGC Scorpy green or livery green.

I'd rather not mix since I know I will fuck it up the second time

Make the forehead part less wide, and try to draw an upper case T on the mouth. That will make it look like a cool shaped skull such as the Punisher logo or the crux terminatus instead of a fat, squat, blob.

Acrylic medium. Comes in several varieties, like gloss, satin, mat, metal, glaze and who the fuck knows.
Vallejo makes whole bunch of these, GW has that Lahmian Medium® and Tamiya has at least one or two clear acrylic paints.
I think other companies have these too.

You could also try this, but it might need some thinners to work on little men painting scale.

Something like prime white, base rakarth flesh and then layer pallid wych flesh? Any ideas?
>>
>>46070301

Buy Tamiya Clear or Citadel glaze. Shooting colored washes through an airbrush also works.

Trying to make one yourself often just makes a milky wash that is best used for feathering and blending rather than a transparent colored glaze.

This; even a Badger/Paashe single action would be better than that plastic bodied POS. A couple of things to note about using shop compressors, too:
- You need an adapter of some sort (no airbrush uses the bigger shop style connectors). Get one AFTER you have your brush in hand, or do some thorough research on your brush's thread style beforehand (nothing is particularly universal).
- You might want to swap regulators on the compressor, too (or put a low pressure one inline). You won't be using more than about 30 psi, so getting accurate pressure when the dial goes way up to 200 can be a trick.

Never let your hair lose near models/paint/glue, it can and will get messy.

Two simple questions - a simple green bath would remove all the texture paint from a base, right?

And do I just throw my model in the freezer for a while to break up plastic cement so I can remove him from the assault marine platforms GW gives me?

Freezer won't break plastic cement because plastic cement welds the two pieces together.

Some DA chapter standard wip. Will probably repaint the wing on his left side tomorrow.

But I had the choice of either simply buying the failcast DA standard bearer or making a new one from scratch for my old brother Bethor.

I chose the less annoying option.

Haaave you tried shaking it? Because, y'know, Gehennas Gold is basically red paint with metallic shit in it.

shake it a bunch
metallics separate more than regular paints
at least it isnt screaming bell, which is hands down the worst paint i have ever purchased

Greeting /wip/. I have just assembled my first box of miniatures ever.

I was wondering if someone could recommend some GW paints to match the color scheme of pic related.

I'm choosing GW simply because there is a store 2 miles from my home and it's just easier than waiting for shipping, etc.

Cut it. The weld is a solid piece of plastic now, no other choice.

Now you understand my hatred for people who use the stuff and then sell it on ebay.

I bought it over a year ago, shaking isn't doing much.

Might just need a new pot.
>>

Stir it with a stick.
>>
>>46079221
keep shaking
shake it a lot, it'll go back together
i've had my gehennas gold for 2 years at least now and its still perfectly fine, if you have some acrylic medium you can try adding a little in

How do I stop buying paints? I have bought 22 paint pots in the last to weeks and I don't see any end in sight.

gave it to my hyperactive little brother and had him shake it for me

worked like a charm

no idea what a "green bath" is.... I'm not a native english speaker.

I always use a disinfectant called "sterilium", because it's very effective and doesn't harm plastic. No idea if it's available in your country. Be aware that not every disinfectant is able to remove acrylic paint, sometimes it comes don't to testing.
In the past I've used PVC floor cleaner from a company called "Mellerud" but I guess you can buy similar stuff from other brands, just don't use cheap products, in my experience they never worked well.

They are sweet little buggers those Skinks! :D

thx for feedback, even though the pic is terrible. As soon as they are more presentable I'll make some pics with a decent cam.
