His wife has just used his Facebook account to announce he's passed away on the Oldhammer page.
Always one of my favourite Games Workshop artists, with his sharp comic book style. He really understood the forty first millennium.

Shit man, that's rough. And he was always one of my favorites.
>one day all the old gw artists and writers will be dead.
A grim and dark future indeed.
>>45321478
One day, no more Matt Ward and C.S. Goto.
>Thought for the day: Thousand innocent deaths is a small price to pay for the death of one heretic.
Awww man, now I'm sad.
I always loved his stuff.
His illustrations in the 3rd Edition 40k rulebook really defined the look of the Imperium for me.
>>45321478
It's not like they're doing anything anymore. It's all freelance cg crap now.
Sad news.
>>45321587
Same here, the art direction for 3rd was incredible. Nothing like the homogenous style they've tried for from ~4th onward.
And of course he did a lot of magic cards too
>>45321520
You motherfucker, I was supposed to be sad and I laughed instead. Thank you.

>>45321758
Who are those guys? Guardsmen?
>>45321520
ward left the company a couple of years ago. and i'm reasonably sure goto hasn't written anything in even longer.
>>45321825
Necromunda Cawdors
It must have been sudden, he posted some new stuff only yesterday
>>45322649
Yeah he was signing stuff at the Foundry Oldhammer even in the summer and seemed fine.
As others have stated, his 3rd edition codex art really defined the visual style of 40k for many fans. He will be missed dearly.
>>45321128
>Thought for the day: Only in death does duty end
- 3rd edition codex
He was never one of my favourite artists, but he always had a striking looking style and made memorable pieces.
Very sad news. His art was one of the things that helped pull me so deeply into the 40k universe when I first got into the game.
>>45325120
this
>>45321520
Ward at least made decent rules. his fluff was all over the place but his crunch was usually quite solid.
>>45323751
Wrong Wayne, you cunt.
>>45321758
quintessential 40k. All possibilities for iconography are skulls, lots of bullet holes of a wide range of caliber, fuckhuge guns and muscles.
thanks op really brought me back
>>45326900
He had a knack for positioning machinery and weapons at right angles to the 4th wall in order to emphasize bold geometric shapes in his compositions, and his trademark bullet holes were both a reverent homage to Texas highway signage (various calibers AND buckshot) and a veritable clinic for modelers painting "battle damage" on their tanks and scenery.
He will be missed.
>>45321587
>>45321707
I've heard 3rd was the most grimdark of editions, did he do any good examples of that?
>>45329721
>the most grimdark
No, v3 was the Golden Age for player agency before we were deemed otiose to a niche LLC, but it wasn't particularly grimdark. But yes, imo some of Wayne's best work was featured in that era.
One of my favourite pieces by him.
>>45321128
Based on first last name match and a faulthy human assuming that names aren't lies
his art improved a lot over his career
for a while shit was a bit repetitive tho
I remember hating a lot of his pieces from D&D 3.5, but looking over this thread I can see his style felt more in place for 40k.
He did my favorite version of Oblivion ring.
RIP in peace.
How'd he go?
>no more angry skulls
Damn
what kind of crappy father with surname like "England" doesn't name his son "Captain" or "Doctor" or some other badass name? what kind of crappy father doesn't want his son to be a superhero?
>>45335139
A normal person that doesn't want his kid to be made fun of in school for his entire childhood?
shit
I always loved his art.
>>45335228
who would dare make fun of Captain England himself?
also such a name is awe-inspiring, rather than fun-worthy.
I think this is one of his.
>>45335242
>>45335351
When I was at University in Scotland there was a lad running for student President called Robert Alexander Fett - Bob. A Fett.
But he was preppy rowing-club arsehole so insisted on being called Robert.
Once he came into the pub I was in to tout for votes and I hurled abuse at him for about fifteen minutes about how disappointed his father must be in him for not caring about the effort it must have took to get that on the birth certificate.
>>45335384
his father was awesome
>>45335351
>who would dare make fun of Captain England himself?
fucking everyone. Were you never a young boy?
Have to be sneaky with names. Gotta placate a wife and protect them from all the other tiny monsters
>>45335351
If I was 12 years old I would probably do it every day of the week if I could. Also, having your dad give you a retarded name will pretty much cockblock you for your entire youth.
>>45335410
>Were you never a young boy?
but I never was Captain England
anyway, from what I remember, you were normally mocked for what you were or did, not what you were called.
>>45335454
how on Earth is "Captain" a retarded name? it's pretty awesome. if the kid in question is handsome and cool enough it will only be better for him.
>>45335468
It's basically as bad as your parents naming you after a meme. A joke wont be funny for an entire lifetime.
>What is the fear of death?
>To die with our task unfulfilled.
>What is the joy of life?
>To die knowing our task is done.
RIP Wayne England. Your art will continue to fuel our imaginations for many years still.
Even in death, you serve.
I love his art, but I have to say I don't like how he only has two options for hair- wire brush or bald.
>>45321128
I never knew who he was but I remember being 14 and copying painstakingly one of his small space marine pics fromthe 3rd edition codex.
>RIP art man
>>45334431
Ill for the last 3 months or so - cancelled an event in December
>>45321128
The guy who did the Digganobz art and many more is dead?
That's blow. Seriously I hate it sometimes when people die. Especially if they were cool dudes.
>>45335822
No one makes it out alive anon
Every soul shall taste death
>>45335840
Indeed. Everyone. Sooner or later.
This sucks, Wayne was one of the old guard who really defined the aesthetic of GW's worlds.
This man's work is what I think of when I think 40k. He caught the feel of the grim darkness, while giving it an 80's comic book look to it. Makes me think of Sandman at times.
A damn shame this artist has passed. He had a very distinct style, that really caught the feel of Warhammer.
>>45335817
That sucks.
>>45335242
I think I found that one and posted it here back when I used to collect rare 2e rules. I was surprised to find a 2e Legion of the Damned list ran in white dwarf just before 3rd edition, and it had a handful of really neat Wayne England LotD pieces that never got reused in later chapter approved/index astartes stuff.
>>45321128
Sad news, this. While I like his later style, his early stuff is awesome too.
>>45332272
tons of atmosphere for a character portrait
>>45321128
I mostly just remember him from the 3.5 magic gear book, desu.
>>45332272
>Blue Steel stare
>>45321166
I remember that being a WD cover at the time.
