Decided on my build:

Royal Guard
Role: Bodyguard
Kingdom: Sorolona
Charge: Princess Sira

Personal Powers

Superhuman Strength 1
Superhuman Agility 3
Enduring Lifeforce 3
Superhuman Durability 2
Superhuman Intellect 2
Legendary Armor (Aura of Attraction) 1

Intrigue Powers

Arts of Alchemy 2
Uncanny Senses 2
Seductive Form 1

Leadership Powers

Magical Education 1
Historic Education (Sorolona) 1
Engineering Degree 1
Environmental Degree 1
Of Great and Noble Line 4
Eric Keirstrat 2

I decided to go for a build where I'm probably not going to see a lot of hardcore front line combat so I don't need Superhuman Durability 3, so a swanky bodyguard suit that gives me a charisma and defensive boost is probably better. It's basically impossible to get the drop on me so I don't have to worry about getting killed in my sleep, and I plan to use my friendship with Eric and Superhuman Intellect 2 to keep ahead of any problems that might pop up. I suspect we'll talk business over chess or something.

I took all those knowledge skills and Of Great and Noble Line to try and influence the Queen to allow Sira to oversee a grand project aimed at essentially starting the Renaissance dressed up as improving kingdom infrastructure and increasing mining and food production efficiency.

Also I think it's easy to see I'm planning to try to get a marriage with Sira. Out of all the countries I actually think Sorolona has a political landscape best suited to this goal, simply because marrying for political reasons isn't necessary. I'll prove my value to the crown, politic to keep any potential suitors at bay, and win the Princesses' favor.

Gotta procrastinate to stay alive... Also I see this got a flaws page. Nice.

I'll start with the flaws for flavor:
> Escort Mission (+1 Personal Token)
> Unpopular Opinion (+1 Intrigue Token)
> Dark Accusation (+1 Intrigue Token)
> The Bones of the Earth (+2 Personal Tokens)
>A Threat to the Gods (+4 Leadership Tokens)

Not entirely sure if I can take an ally's challenge, but I figure so long as it's my problem...

Role:
>Captain of the Guard
Kingdom:
>Bleuria
Charge:
>Princess Esther (+2 Personal)
Personal Powers: Limit (10)
>Superhuman Strength (2)
>Superhuman Agility (2)
>Enduring Lifeforce (1)
>Wherever Needed (1)
>Superhuman Durability (3)
>Master of the Wilds (1)
Intrigue Powers: Limit (7)
>Unnatural Stealth (1)
>Arts of Alchemy (1)
>Uncanny Senses (1)
>Operational Leeway (1)
>Visions of the Present (2)
>Criminal Intent (1)
Leadership Powers: Limit (24)
>Historic Education (1)
>Combat Veteran (1)
>Environmental Degree (1)
>Secret Hideout (1)
>Escape Charm (1)
>Resurrection Stone (1)
>Inspiring Presence (1)
>The Tides of War: The Holy Realm (4)
>Age of Empires: Delvaria (4)
>Tora Greenharbor (2)
>Earl Jorn Blackbay (2)
>Sandra Tenneman (2)
>Corin Thenhall (2)

Got 1 unspent Leadership Token, since it's an imagination-game anyone who wants it can have it...

Now for business:
The Holy Realm, in a desperate bid to retain control over its populace and with the waning influence of the church, excommunicate Delvaria after King Dalin's denouncement of the faith. Seeking aid the King will quickly turn to his closest of geographical allies for assistance in the coming war, who, due to King Berthold's staunch abhorrence of violence, will turn him down... Yet it would be that same distaste that would doom him as he would refuse to levy trade restrictions upon the nation, at Esther's behest, lest they themselves become embroiled in war. This does not sit well with the Holy Empire, not well at all, and comes at the worst possible time...

>>45241577
As the mines erupt with foul pestilence and necromancy, thousands upon thousands die; and the faith couldn't be happier... With a "legitimate" claim they state also that the nation of Bleuria is conspiring with Delvaria, as proven by God's wrath upon what was once a peaceful, beautiful nation. Having no other options, Berthold will uneasily ally himself with Dalin. To the peasents and smallfolk this will utterly prove the accusations of the church true and I, as well as all of the royal family will be decried as demons in human skin; what else could explain my uncanniness? As I fight desperately to retake a fallen labyrinth of shafts and caves with my men, a coup led by foreign paladins and the classic peasants-with-pitchforks will force my hand to protect Esther who will be forever darknened by the near-assassination...

It's my job to stop the Blight, end the War, protect the princess, and clear our names...

I'll do it or I'll die trying. Luckily, I'm not alone.

Is it me or most builds seems to focus on protecting the regent? I mean, everyone is free to build as their wish but it seems the original objective given to your character is to cause some kind of change on this stagnant world and simply protecting seems too passive.
If anything, I think those regents are more of a tool to be used for the objective, not the objective itself.
>>
>>45244091
Well this one >>45242894 seems to involve toppling the corrupt king in the Holy Realm.
>>
>>45244091

>>45238835
>>45238858
>>45238890

I'd be cool if there was a world map.
>>
>>45244091
IMO the lore is weird. The entity wants you to cause conflict but then puts you in guardian/defense style positions.
>>
>>45245389
It was probably an author's shift of attention.
>>
>>45245389
I think it's to give a initial boost on influence and power. It's often easier to start a mayhem as a king's general than a farmer.
>>
>>45245514
So where is the war general position or rhe pirate/bandit position? All of the ones in the CYOA are super passive ones. Even the warrior one is basically a watchdog who has to protect and therefore try to stick to safety with their charge.

In a CYOA where the focus is overwhelmingly on passive and defensive builds, it doesn't matter that a block of text claims you're supposed to stir shit up, most people won't do it.

>>
>>45245755
Wow, anon, I'm sorry for discussing a CYOA in the CYOA thread. I didn't know this was a designated shitposting zone where I can only make brilliant high quality and constructive remarks like "why do you care lmao".

Stop being an annoying cunt yourself.
>>
>>45245647
I don't see why one can't be a warlord under King Aurest as Captain of the Guard (which includes "an enviable military rank", and as far as I know medieval military is not that formalized and the guy who actually stays around the king commanding the royal guard is the Bodyguard) or a admiral in Torvalli. Said admiral might as well betray the crown and become a pirate, with enough charisma, speech and gold the crew will follow you (or you can ditch them and get Ali Ornstein pirates to join you).

>Whether you desire personal power or pleasures, the benefit and betterment of mankind, the growth of a nation and legacy, or pure destructive chaos... I'll find use for you.
>And as I stir in a little worldy turmoil, you'll find it is enough to shape the future. Change is coming, and it will be up to you to guide the fate of your chosen charge and their nation.
>I seek only change, be that by guidance or betrayal.
Some extracts from the CYOA indicated that though the entity doesn't care if you will take care or not about the crown, just that you do something out of it instead of maintaining the status quo.
>>
>>45245935
Because a captain of a guard isn't a warlord even in the most militant organization. It's the person organizing the defenders of a city or estate.

And I do realize that it's always possible to change into a general or a pirate or whatever, but the thing is that the CYOA isn't about that, there aren't any options for it in there.

On the question of why everyone is making completely passive and defensive builds, this is the answer. Because all the CYOA gives is the base for a variety of passive and defensive builds.

I don't really care either way, I'm just explaining why people are making such builds.
>>
>>45244091
Agree but it's also situational. A rulers demise could very well be the turning point in a war
>>
>>45246016
Fair enough.
>>
>>45246016
>On the question of why everyone is making completely passive and defensive builds, this is the answer.
>Because they want to protect their waifu.
Fixed.
>>
>>45246429
Well, that and there's no reason to actually stir things up, where as you get drastically weakened if your charge dies.
>>
The end result of the RG builds is that you are a person in very close confidence to a member of royalty, with a variable amount of superhuman capabilities that can not just protect them but aid them. No one is closer to them than you, and you can steer their decisions, offer ideas, and basically turn them into agents of change from their shadow.

The narrator is willing to do some of the work. They expect you, whether actively or passively, to be the catalyst that makes things escalate differently than they would otherwise.
>>
>>45246813
That seems like a strange expectation.
>>
>>45246813
Yep. Not the CYOAs fault anons are being unambitious.
>>
>>45246872
It is actually. If the CYOA isn't exciting them enough to think up something else than the basic given situation, then that's a fault of the CYOA.

Of course, I'm not saying that getting people to be imaginative is easy, it's like the hardest thing. Readers mostly just want to read, not make up their own plot twists.
>>
>>45246950
Or maybe anons just want to fucking protect their waifu and fuck them. Goddamn. Not everyone here wants to be godking fuckbeard the pirate and ruin everything for everyone.
>>
>>45246977
No. Even the builds that don't focus on waifu shit are like that.
>>
>>45246850
It's a strange entity. You have your memories of Earth, you aren't a brand new person. The vague concept is that this world is very stagnant, even one outsiders perspective from a position of power could have a butterfly effect.
>>45246872
Eh, it's not unambitious to protect your charge. And most builds haven't stopped there anyways. Most people mention plans of conquest or something like that. Even if all you do is keep Alys alive and give the occasional bit of advice, there's some influence there. The narrator is willing to put you there and give you power on the off chance you'll do something with it they like. It's easy.
>>45246950
One of my favorite builds just took Prince Cael and Captain Ali and fucked off on pirate adventures. No change planned, not a very protective plan. Just what that person wanted to do.
I left it open ended to see stuff like that. The narrator doesn't care whether or not you are loyal to its objectives, or to your charge. Neither do I.
>>
So wait, do you have only your mind and memories but are otherwise a new person, or are you literally just you sucked through a wormhole?

My primary concern is figuring out the secret to my queen's longevity, which I'm hoping is some form of immortality or at least a ridiculously long and youthful life. This means pitting my superhuman criminal mind against that of a monarch who managed to secure absolute power for herself. No easy task. But if I succeed(a very big if), my reward, after fleeing the continent, is getting to carve a hedonistic path through the other kingdoms all the while lying, cheating, scamming, conning, seducing, and fucking to my heart's desire. Wandering to where I please, doing whatever I please and spreading some chaos along the way is everything I could ever want in life, or 9 lives in my case. Just gotta remember to stay a few steps ahead of Queen Vera's wrath.

Considered taking the bonus quests, but having my loyalty tied to Queen Vera is obviously out of the question. Plus I'll be the one committing Betrayal Most Foul. Seeing as there's a chance that some will come to pass anyways means I won't miss out on much. I have a feeling my ex-liege will bring the Weakening Curse or Primary Suspect down on my head.

Most of the builds I've seen have fallen into two main camps. Seduce waifu, and cause trouble. The second example, I've seen people overthrow kingdoms, start their own kingdoms, be massive hedonists, all kinds of shit. Hell even the first group often goes on adventures and fucks with the kingdom's structure, it's just that the people who don't do ANYTHING new are the ones who just want to marry their waifu and nothing else.
>>
>>45247262
And the people who want cool powers and nothing else.
>>
>>45247299

>>
>>45247262
Most of the seduce waifu builds I've seen, or paid attention to at least, mentioned at the very least building up their nation's technology or military or economy to dominate. One kingdom having a huge edge over everyone else is a start of change at least.
>>
>>45247325
And I've yet to see anyone only take a waifu and nothing else.

What is this meme where people take random discussion about something to be hate?
>>
>>45247491
What do you mean uglier? You could literally just combine the 3rd page with one of the other two. There's no moving around or cutting anything necessary.
>>
>>45247530
Page 1 is about your charge and the intro, Page 2 is personal skills, Page 3 is drawbacks. Combing them would mash two concepts together on one extra long page, whereas now it's clearly delineated. It'd also make one page longer than the other, which is jarring.
>>
>>45247557
Drawbacks are the same concept as boons, just with a negative effect instead of a positive one.

>It'd also make one page longer than the other, which is jarring.
And it's also the way things are right now. The first two are similar in length, but the third is a lot shorter.

Slipping into the courts of Ansanar, the woman known only as the Morrigan was first treated as, and presented herself as, an exotic curiosity. The young Queen quickly took a liking to her, and she to the Queen, soon the Lady was using her uncanny skills of manipulation and extensive network of contacts to leverage events in the Queens favour when she so wished. Within months of her arrival the enigma of the Lady was a permanent feature of the royal court, quietly pulling strings and appearing anywhere she pleased as she fell into the roll of the Crown's Cryptarch. Rumours abounded about her motivations, and her pay, but none could say for certain who she truly swears allegiance to. cont.

I'm confused by your point totals. 10 Personal, 17 Intrigue, and 14 Leadership. Drawbacks grant 1 Personal, 1 Intrigue, OR 2 Leadership. The your-nation-only challenge offers 2, 2, OR 4.
And I see you settled on four names.
>>
>>45247675
When first slave revolts began to break out, there were whispers of her encouragement to the Queen not intervene. The Guilds were outraged at the rumours, for weeks they were actually barred from court due to threats of violence. Soon, the Crown was forced to act. Declaring itself in favour of the slaves, they took this as the opportunity to seize power once and for all. The Revolution was not without it's casualties though, the Queen's own father publicly disowned her, and attempted an assassination in broad daylight during a supposed peace agreement. Soon though, the Guilds were smashed, and Ansanar was united as a nation of free peoples under their sovereign king and queen. The army, recently battle hardened and emboldened, are now leering menacingly at the weak, embattled nations of the Holy Realm and Delvaria. They had finally erupted into open conflict with each other, with most of their leadership ending up assassinated and their fleets in disarray or turned to piracy. It would seem that the Lady Morrigan had arrived at a surreptitious time, the nation she had helped rebuild was primed to become a major world power and her place at the Crown's side was assured in the coming prosperity. Some though have long whispered about her, and continue to even now. Her arrival coincided eerily with the beginning of hostilities, the slave revolt, and the fall of the Guilds. Lines have been drawn, but no one has ever turned up anything concrete. Of course, such speculation is entirely baseless. Her loyalty is what has earned her power, nothing more and nothing less.

Okay, you're real enough.

So, I'm curious as to what the Federation Navy and Blackhawk Elite use as their standard issue armour and service rifle.

I'm also curious, as to why you like the Luos Syndicate so much. Aside from the fact they have best waifus, what's up with that?

Standard issue Blackhawk Elite AR would be the H23. The calibre is called BH; they're the ones who developed the platform. For the Feds, pretty much anything between the FD22 Sprint up to the Orca, depending on divisions. If you were to ask what the most common one was, I'd have to say the EVI platform.

As for armour, normal infantry armour is Fed standard issue. For the Blackhawks, it'd be between infantry and reactive plating. SOFs of both entities would probably use Erinyes, Pioneer, or (mostly) Crown Mk3 armour. More elite forward divisions would probably use Olympian or Hellhound.

It's mainly cause I've fleshed out Luos Syndicate the most, plus the whole setting of the CYOA takes place on a timeline right after its fall. I guess I attribute my attention to it because of my planning of where the people of the Luos Syndicate ended up, and how the whole Syndicate was structured (inner vs. core, etc).

Even so, it's not exactly that I'm giving the Syndicate a lot of attention; just the military portion of it. I really like the thought of well-organized PMCs such as the Blackhawks or the Cerberus Legion in space opera settings, so I had a lot of fun fleshing those entities out. I mean, the way these corporations can interact with each other in comparison to their structure and differences yet share the same sort of mentality, even if they're on opposite ends of the battlefield (or space battlefield).

I really hoped people made more PMC-centered or communal builds by interacting with the setting or each other. Instead, it was all lone-wolf stuff where people had to get the most powerful Herald ships.

In order for his King Nasha, to finally restore rightful power to his crown without inciting a civil war, we will need to be crafty and underhanded. We must make the people strive to be underneath crowns rule once more, and to do this we must get rid of the guilds and liberate the slaves.

I have requested that the king not keep me in his courts. This is to remain anonymous and avoid suspicion

I then take my fortune and run an "escort" business, with my spies working undercover with me. I use this as cover so that we can get close to our targets without drawing attention. Corin and his men will serve as my bodyguards and right hand. From there it's simply a matter of time. Perhaps a local hero is murdered and they find a bloody knife underneath the guild leaders bed. Perhaps the town drinking water becomes toxic and they find proof that the local guild has been using it as an outhouse. Perhaps a couple of local guild members suddenly go on a crime spree and the day is saved by some proud knights of the crown.

We'll then start hyping up the king to the local slaves and state how rule underneath him would mean fair and equal treatment for all.

Meanwhile following the local water intoxication incident, the king comes up with a brilliant invention to help irrigate the water and begins construction immediately. Perhaps he pays a personal visit to the family of that poor man who died

It's only a matter of time until the people come back to the crown demanding he be king once more.

>>
>>45248474
I personally wanted to go BESCIENCE THE SPACEDEEPS, but I had no real grasp on what the potential problems of that could be, so it tended to turn into "Well, how many ways do I think things could go wrong, and how much will it cost to prevent those things from instantly exploding me, should they happen to appear?"

And that just turned into an exercise in maximum defense tanking, since the relationship between "how much damage a weapon deals" versus "how much do you take through your defenses" isn't clear.
>>
>>45248474
If it makes you feel any better I've been pretty adverse to lone-wolfing it. Since the Blackhawks are my favourite faction, my favourite builds are based around operating for the Blackhawks. Take my present main build for example; it's basically a Heavy Cruiser (more so in terms of role than design) designed for long range patrol missions in the Outer Rim or leading a Squadron/Task Unit of smaller vessels for some purpose.

Nah, it would be more like one guy brings a battleship, and the other guy brings a few escorting craft. They both use full points for their builds, they just decide to "play" together afterwards.

>>45248535
I know I did. It's why I'm in a little of a conundrum on how to approach future serious CYOAs of mine and how to make them work the way I want them to work.

>>45248543
That was the intention for future DLCs, but that's if I decide to revisit the CYOA. Star Dust had a good run but I don't think people want any more of it, at least not for awhile. I'm a little burned out on it myself.

Don't take this to mean that it's over, though. I'm just simply adamant that the main CYOA is complete and done for, and I think that should suffice for now.

>>45248665
Real-life ones, sure. They can at least be made believably tolerant in fiction. Plus, in an intergalactic civilized setting, I think PMCs would be more relevant than ever.

>>45248687
I know. The CYOA focuses a lot more on military than anything, but the scope of the CYOA was really large as it is.

>>45248694
That's what I like to hear. Most of my test builds were similar to this; assuming you'd get logistical support from your chosen faction and always a place to call home. It just wouldn't make sense for one to lone-wolf it in space with such large ships.

>>45248724
The problem lies with the scope. It's hard for me to solidify so many different settings in one setting, if you can understand what I mean by that. I mean, each faction is a setting in itself with its own endless amount of stories, culture, social etiquette, morals, and so on. It's hard to just comprehend how to establish something so grand for so many settings.

Time is my biggest constraint. I would love to run it more as well, but this semester isn't being kind to me.

>>45248780
Do you want to ally yourself with an established faction, or do you want to have fun alone and then get eaten alive by said established factions?
>>
>>45248879
Well, there is the matter of maintenance and operation expenses. Fact is, if you're working for a proper faction you get your fuel, repairs, general maintenance, ammunition, supplies, etc all paid for by your boss. Furthermore, you also receive your own salary and you don't have to worry about furthering paying for your crew's salary out of your own pocket.

Of course all these concepts are pretty much ignored in the CYOA for the sake of simplicity, but I still like to factor these in.
>>
>>45248919
>I don't think people want any more of it
???
>>
>>45248870
But everyone who made a build for stardust has skills. The people who are willing to devote work and loyalty to a faction has a leg up to all the freelancers, in terms of networking and assistance that is available.

>>45248879

>>
>>45248919
>They can at least be made believably tolerant in fiction.
If you make them stupid and ridiculous to the point where they don't function, yeah. None of your PMCs came across as non-monsters.

You're going to have a hard time making people that murder and rape civilians tolerable. Especially in space, where they can do it to you too if they want because government oversight is difficult. Want to murder/rape anon and his waifus and take his ship? If the boss likes you more, go for it. Why not?
>>
>>45248987
Its the nondescript space future. We have cloning technology.

CUSTOMIZABLE WAIFUS FOR EVERYONE
>>
>>45248944
Most people don't play multiplayer in Stardust. That other people have similar builds mean jackall unless they're playing together.
>>
>>45248919
I've been considering doing some writefagging on one of my builds, just for fun. But, maybe it might help flesh out the faction(s) I end up including? I mainly say this because I'll be relying of personal military experience to fill in gaps in my interpretation.
>>
>>45248919
>Do you want to ally yourself with an established faction, or do you want to have fun alone and then get eaten alive by said established factions?
Considering it's fantasy? I don't have to get 'eaten alive'. I can imagine scenarios where I don't get fucked over arbitrarily.
>>
>>45248998
Yay!. Wait, does that mean I can buy multiples of the same waifu... Interesting...
>>
>>45248919
>assuming you'd get logistical support from your chosen faction and always a place to call home.
Why would you assume people want to play military? The military sucks ass, dude. People ordered to die over stupid petty shit you don't care about.
>>
>>45248987
Allow custom waifus from nondescript crew archetypes?
>>
>>45248925
You also don't get to do anything you want. You have to be near base so you can take orders, you have to follow orders, then you go back to base because your ship and life doesn't belong to you, but your boss. You can only do what they say.
>>
>>45249002
But I'm not talking about multiplayer.

Its just much more difficult to make a living as a lone-wolf, paying all the expenses for a ship and crew and finding meaningful contracts to by yourself when there's well established, powerful and influential factions that hog up all the contracts leaving you with the nothing but the scraps.

You have to deal with the consequence of your decisions.
>>
>>45249054
>It's much more difficult
And people like dreaming of overcoming tough challenges.
>>
>>45249052
>People actually take titles to build an advanced ship they can't even fly around on their own, that can only be undocked on the faction's orders.
>Putting your life at risk for your boss' sake and no one else.
>>
>>45249052
This is not true. For example with the Blackhawks you own your own ship, but essentially work under a contract for them as a "Partner". For Federation Spec Ops, it's highly likely you have a large amount of personal freedom given the nature of your line of work. For the Federation Navy your only assignment is to build and manage your own fleet/vessel.
>>
>>45249063
There's what only one or two anons that have writefagged what they plan to do with their builds?

Whereas everyone else either just presents their builds with no further detail or a one or two sentence description describing how they're going to romance their favorite waifus and what generic space adventure they're going to have with very little thought put in.
>>
>>45249112
People are too lazy to write, I'm telling you in general. In videogames and fiction, people like overcoming challenges and feeling gratified.
>>
>>45249104
>Freedom
You need to be within range to receive and carry out orders in a timely fashion to do your job at all you can't have freedom.
>>
>>45248942
Okay, I've had enough of it. At least for now.

I've admitted to cutting a lot of corners in its development, even for the current version. That's simply because I was already burned out on it, and I just wanted to get it done.

>>45248989
And you're assuming that all PMC divisions are rapist murderers? People are capable of holding together a moral structure, I don't see where your pessimism is coming from.

In a setting as large as this one, PMCs would be everywhere in the form of not-bandit organizations and legitimate security and defense corporations, not even counting legitimate military-like divisions that follow a governmental structure. Who's going to protect your mining operations? Who's going to be attacking them? I never explicitly said that all PMCs in Star Dust are either morally sound or not, but it's clear that some of them are there to protect people. Meanwhile, there are others that seek the complete opposite.

>>45249012
Experience in matters I don't have is always welcome, especially military ones. I always welcome different interpretations, too. Some of the lore was actually fleshed out by people other than me, anyways.

>>45249017
That's fine, that's the intention of the five .jpg images you read to create a build. Interpretation.

If you were to ask me, though, I would say that such a mentality is unrealistic to the point where I can't enjoy imagining such a situation. I personally have more fun interacting with people, be it my fictitious person or not.

>>45249037
You're assuming that you're a mere grunt in Star Dust, when it's quite the opposite. I mean, you could build yourself as one and I do enjoy those builds as well (much more than powertrippers), but you're commanding the ship. You've got higher ups, but don't dismiss that you're someone of power.

Am I the only one who still has faith in realistic people? Despite the assholes, people can be cool, too.

What he >>45249104 said, it's dependent on who you align with.
>>
>>45249139
I have to deal on a regular basis.

I don't see the problem at all.
>>
>>45249150
>And you're assuming that all PMC divisions are rapist murderers?
I'm telling you what a lot of PMCs do. You should see the amount of complaints. Do all of them go THAT far? Yes, ever PMC has some employees like that. Do all of said mercs do that? No, but the vast majority are bastards on some level.

>Legitimate security and defense.
Yeah, Blackwater was technically legitimate. Doesn't mean they're not evil.

>some of them are there to protect people.
For money. That doesn't make them moral people. PMCs never are.
>>
>>45249150
>I personally have more fun interacting with people
You're a black sheep here.
>>
>>45249139
HyperComms yo. Also, the Federation has a pretty massive range of operation, same goes for the Blackhawks. If you work for either you can expect to be sent all over the fucking place. Also, once again given the nature of the initial origin story for the Blackhawks and Federation (which I use as examples since they would be the most strict in terms of leadership and orders), you orders are likely going to be vague as fuck, like "patrol this general area of space and fuck up pirates". Naturally how you choose to carry out these orders gives you a lot of leeway.
>>
>>45249150
>You're assuming that you're a mere grunt in Star Dust
So? Nobody in the military is allowed to go and do as they please.
>>
>>45249217
>If you work for either you can expect to be sent all over the fucking place
I accounted for that. As I said, you can only undock your ship when they say and take it where they say. There's no freedom there, you're traveling on their dime to where they want you.

Patrol isn't unstructured. It always follows specific paths and within a narrow area. This isn't freedom to take your ship anywhere, it can only be where it's commanded to be.
>>
>>45249230
>So
I meant No.
>>
>>45249230
That's not entirely true. It depends on your orders and assignment, usually for higher ups the orders tend to be quite vague and become more specific as they filter down the chain of command. Also, there's the whole (very common) thing with military personnel learning how to get around the rules and structure of the military to get away with shit they otherwise shouldn't be able to.
>>
>>45249271
Trying to circumvent your orders would be rather hard when you have a fuel tank.
>>
>>45249130
In videogames and fiction the challenge comes from actually solving the puzzle, defeating the enemies and achieving the objectives.

The problem with being a lone wolf is that most of the challenges are not related to space adventures, but to maintain your self sufficiency. A vast majority of your time is going to be spent on administrative and logistical tasks trying to hold your ship together on a shoe string budget.

Whereas people who work for a faction doesn't have to worry about that problem, if they're commanding officers they can pick and choose dangerous assignments to go on that challenges them in a more enjoyable manner.
>>
>>45249298
>most of the challenges are not related to space adventures
>People can't imagine their own adventures and challenges to overcome
Is imagination a foreign concept to you?
>>
>>45249298
Everyone wants to think they could do it on their own. Being part of a big organization cheapens the fantasy. That's all it is. People want to imagine doing it on their own, and that they could make it as comfortable/rewarding as anything else.
>>
>>45249287
That's everyone's problem in stardust.
>>
>>45249271
How many lieutenants do you know that can take a battleship out on a joyride?

>>45249298
People in a faction don't have to worry about going on adventures either. They're not doing anything. They're either on base, awaiting orders, or traveling in a straight line to where orders say to go.
>>
>>45247443
>>45247417
I've always really liked this one.
>>
>>45249298
Commanding officers don't choose their orders.
>>
>>45249341
It's less than half of the CYOA.
>>
>>45249332
My point is they have more freedom to decide on what kind of adventures they want to go on, to achieve that gratification.
>>
>>45249344
They have the freedom of deciding how best to accomplish those orders.
>>
>>45249357
No they don't. They don't have any choices on what they do. Their commanders/handlers/bosses do. They have no freedom.
>>
>>45249371
Within a very limited range. They're not free to take the government's ship they THINK they own out anywhere without approval.
>>
>>45249315
You might want to speak to these guys about imagination.

>>45249372
>>45249381
>>
>>45249381
That really depends on the organization of the military and on whether the government actually owns the ship or not. Since a build where you own it yourself is equal to one where you're working for the federation or something, it's fair to say that actually owning the ship is on the table.
>>
>>45249248
The path of a patrolling vessel is entirely determined by its Captain, not his boss. His boss only determines the general area he is to patrol. It sort of follows the concept of the commander in the field having greater situational awareness than the generals back in the main HQ. So, if you suddenly need to abandon your mission based of a change in the situation "on the ground" then you are capable of doing so as teh Captain. You will need to eventually answer for it, but actual punishment is unlikely provided you had a good reason.

>>45249332
Bad example anon. In this case you aren't a lieutenant, you're a Captain or higher. And, you can joyride your ship as much as you want so long as you fall within mission parameters.
>>
>>45249407
It's doubtful a military is going to let you use hardware you claim ownership on like that. It's likely going to belong to them regardless.
>>
>>45249421
It's doubtful it would be allowed today, but today is a very different time from pretty much all of human history. Who's to say what things would be like in space.
>>
>>45249187
You're still comparing PMCs from thousands of years in the future to the primitive ones that exist today. You truly don't think that structure and mentality will change by then? Do you legitimately think I think everyone in any given group, PMC or otherwise, is a lawful-good character?

Okay, I'll open up my .psd files and retcon everything, then.

Calm down, dude. It's a fictional setting. I'm sorry for being a little optimistic, despite my snark in recent times.

Sometimes, watching your debates and arguments in these threads make me depressed.

>>45249139
Pretty much what >>45249217 said, you can expect to see a lot of the universe just by enlisting. So long as you get the task done within the regulations given to you, it's not like you're forced to do it against your will. Otherwise, you shouldn't have picked that job.

I mean, that's like every job.

>>45249322
>Being part of a big organization cheapens the fantasy.
If people want to believe they can go at it alone then so be it, but that's subjective fantasy. As someone different from someone who merely seeks wish-fulfillment and/or power trips, I disagree wholeheartedly with your claims. I prefer a different approach to personal fantasy and that's how I approach the CYOA when I go through it as a player.

>>45249372
>>45249381
>>45249421
What I really don't understand from you guys is how you push the idea that being a lone-wolf in the galaxy is a much more fun approach than integrating yourself with others or a faction, when it's much less realistic. And yet your main argument against not going lone-wolf is realism in how you get 'no freedom', as it is today.

If you have the 'imagination' to be a lone-wolf, what's stopping you from imagining any other situation?
>>
>>45249412
And your mission is to go where you're told. Can't call that a joyride.

People think they're going to be able to hunt down criminals, find new planets, and generally accomplish cool space adventures? That's not happening. You're not likely to patrol somewhere that's not mapped out. Even if you do somehow discover something? You're not beaming down like this is Star Trek. You're reporting that to the higher ups and continuing on your mission. That's all you're allowed to do. Accomplish your orders.
>>
>>45249449
>You're not beaming down like this is Star Trek.
And here comes the police.

Why, exactly, are you not allowed to imagine yourself in a Star Trek setting when the fiction literally exists as one of the most popular franchises in our world?
>>

>You're still comparing PMCs from thousands of years in the future to the primitive ones that exist today
There's zero reason for them to suddenly become morally upstanding. There's no pressure to. There's LESS in space, where full oversight of their actions would be almost impossible.

>Sometimes you make me depressed.
Just trying to explain why people don't want to join the PMCs. I don't want to make you sad or anything.
>>
>>45249449
I mean, you could be a commander Shepard/Enterprise kind of deal. The governments trusts you and your skills to the point where they basically just hand you the keys to the car and a fuckload of guns and just goes "Solve the problems, we know you can do it."
>>

Not everyone seeks realism in their fantasy. Mainly, because real life isn't fun.
>>
>>45249527
There's a different between real life and realism. You don't hear it called "realistic life", do you?
>>
>>45249449
If we're going to be picky about it, I doubt any lonewolves will just joyride around for shits and giggles. After all those spaceship bills won't pay themselves and you got work to do if you want to keep your spaceship running.

Also, if you choose a military faction you bet you'll be hunting down criminals and doing cool space adventures. After all I doubt you'll get in much shit for going off course to investigate a distress beacon, or chase after some wanted pirates, or evacuate an endangered space station. But if it's deep space exploration you want, then you should probably have joined a different faction. Although, you still might be given an exploration assignment, especially if you apply for one.

Vera has been in power because she has an army of people like you at her disposal. People who know what is happening and how to prevent it from becoming her problem.

A spy network is fantastic, but being able to meet with all of your informants in various cities in one night and return to the Queen's side is an ability she rewards. When one of your numerous contacts is the Mask of Marks, there are few that are outside of your reach.

As you are from Sorolona, magic is a part of life; early education in the basics, specializing in illusions and mind magics. After winning the Queen's favor, you were gifted access to a secret hideout that has an entrance in one of the dungeon cells that mysteriously never gets used and is never questioned (one of the many perks of the artifact protecting the entrance).

Unfortunately, when tasked with remote services, magic is not always... acceptable. So, you have picked up the ability to work in the shadows, as well as get yourself out of precarious predicaments in more mundane fashions (though, you're not quite as adept at those methods). But, in your favor, you were born with that face that makes people think you belong as long as you're not drawing attention to yourself.

>>
>>45249547
You don't have a good memory then. In the case of the Blackhawks you literally buy your own ship to start working for them, that gives you quite a lot of negotiating power with your chain of command. For the Federation Navy you are literally given a bunch of money and told to go manage your own fleet.

>>45249600
It's a fictitious setting, but people are gonna base their assumptions on what they know from real life. If you want to make the PMCs look appealing, you have to counter people's real life understanding of them. You'd need a ton of lore spelling out specifically how they behave and their moral standards to do so convincingly.

Realistic science fiction based settings, with no magic attracts the worst autists.

Goal is to establish a Cult of Personality around the queen, and then get it spreading as an quasi-religious ideology of meritocracy and justice. Her name shall be whispered by those who bear the whip in Ansanar, and in the secret meetings at candlelight in the holy realm. Or fleet will be heralded as liberators, not conquerors. We're starting the Napoleonic Wars a bit earlier than intended, no need to thank me.

As for my dalliance with Ali, well... let's put that leeway to good use, ever heard of Ching Shih?

And the... thing... Well, it just makes me curious what else there is to find beyond the wall of reality. A cult has to have angels right?

Down in the depths something goes wrong, and a fighting these damn blighters turns into an escort mission back to the surface. Saving my charge she grows ever fonder of me, aura of attraction... damn that voice it sounded good at the time. At some point I have to fend off the thing that has stirred in the depths, that has followed me from the void. I may only send it packing for the time being, I must prepare for the next encounter with it. The Clergy finally hear about this creature that is interested in me, and me alone. They think it's a demon, coming to take back one of its own. WELL EVERYTHING JUST WANTS TO HAPPEN AT ONCE I GUESS, BUT FUCK THEM I HAVE A LEGENDARY HAMMER ANd HIT LIKE A FUCKING TANK SHELL. BRING IT ON!!!
>>

I'm always pessimistic and miserable, SDA. About all CYOAs and everything else.

>SD
>realistic
It's completely soft sci-fi.
>>
>>45249626
>You'd need a ton of lore spelling out specifically how they behave and their moral standards to do so convincingly.
And I'm not going to fit acts and doctrines and laws worth of documents into the CYOA. I hint throughout the entire CYOA on how they act and you have an established idea of how it works for them, that should be enough. The entire point is for you to formulate on how it became as is yourself. Don't even suggest that I should either add more to the finished CYOA or rewrite parts of it. I don't want to hear that anymore.

Yes, write it off as the author being lazy. I'm not an author or a saint, I'm a faggot like the rest of you who decided to dedicate some time to a setting he came up with in his head one day and liked it. Should I be flattered that you have such high expectations of me? Because honestly I'm so tired of this.

I haven't been this hurt in so long.

>>45249629
There is 'magic' and other bullshit. This is as fictitious as anything else.

>>
>>45249774

>>
>>45249783

I don't know. I was just saying, no need for all of you to jump on me.
>>
>>45249759
Like I said, I didn't set out to put you down or anything, I just wanted to explain the reasons I feel are behind people avoiding PMCs.

As I pointed out, I'm generally miserable and pessimistic about everything and that tens to infect everything I say and everyone I talk to.

>>45249774
If you think you're supporting him somehow you're probably pissing him off more by being pedantic.
>>
>>45249804

>>
>>45249833
You should take this less seriously. If someone on the internet is pissing you off, why not close the browser tab and go do something else?
>>
>>45249800
Would it help if you can buy a magic staff or cast Bestow Geas or something? Because you can literally get trained in using magic in combat scenarios already, and Comet's plot hook about secreting her away from suspicious and probably nefarious organizations is good enough for me. No, it's not Q, but thank god, because Q was a pain in the ass for everybody else.
>>
>>45249848
This guy >>45249783 says it correctly.

It didn't contribute to any sort of discussion at all, or forward any part of an argument. It's just an irrelevant statement that sounds like it's meant to mean something but it doesn't. It doesn't do anything disprove my points, yet it contradicts them as an empty argument that won't lead anywhere.

I mean, what do you want us to say? What do you want me to say? If I had a Q in the setting, that would make it... better? Would it make the setting have more sense?

Splitting hairs. Useless distinction. You do that in any argument, everyone's gonna know you're just "that guy".
>>
>>45249759
I'm not going to lie SDA, but I really like the setting you created. So, as far as I'm concerned I'd love more lore and background on it. Of course, I still realize that part of the charm of SD is that it doesn't give away too much and still lets different people come up with different interpretations. But, at the same time I get that you're pretty burnt out on it, so I don't exactly expect anything SD related for long while.

Sya'ra a best waifu.
>>
>>45249910
I wasn't trying to make it a part of any previous argument. I was just thinking about the extent to which magic is present in sci-fi, and how blurred the line is between magic and technobabble.
>>
>>45249925
The problem is that when you comment responding to someone in a discussion countering any of their points, that is going to be read as you trying to continue that argument with them because that's all it looks like.
>>
>>45249925
The mana in stardust is a good example for that. Is it a magicky word for a technology? Or is it actual magic? Is there any difference?
>>
>>45249935
How the fuck did what I said counter any points? What difference would the difference between the extent of magic in SD and in ST make to anything?
>>
>>45249956
You responded to a conversation expressing that Stardust is not hard scifi. You argued that it's harder than Star Trek, or it looked like you did. Do you get that? Like I said, you need to work on reading a conversation. Your comments on conversations will not be seen as unrelated to that conversation.
>>
>>45249967
>You argued that it's harder than Star Trek, or it looked like you did.
And what point would that make? Seriously, what conclusion are you drawing here?

>Your comments on conversations will not be seen as unrelated to that conversation.
I realize that just fine, that's why I went on a tangent that's irrelevant to whether the federation is like a real life military or whatever it was.

I wonder where all the anons arguing that disappeared by the way.
>>
>>45249996
>And what point would that make?
That just makes it more frustrating, not less. It's like you're arguing over nothing.

>I wonder where all the anons arguing that disappeared by the way.
They either noticed they were making SDA upset and decided to stop, or they couldn't find enough material to keep complaining. Depends on how optimistic you want to be.

Dracula's aim to marry the Princess doesn't seem all that bad; given that the Queen is likely something stranger or more vile to maintain her longevity I'd imagine he'd be quite welcome, though I think he'd have competition from the previous threads.

For my part, I'll be looking for opportunities of adventure to learn and cultivate more friends around and about, a quiet hero of the people to aid in maintaining the Crown's good graces among them, all the while preparing for the inevitable confrontation with the Mask of Marks about rekindling the long-lost royal line of face-changers and their landless empire of people and connections.
