What do you think from fantasy maps which are similar to Europe?
>>
They're okay I guess. Nothing wrong with 'em.

They're too similar to Europe.

For instance, the world of Drakengard, where the Union of Flippedfrance is under siege by the Empire of Notspain.
>>
>>44694526
Literally Europe upside down
I can't even...
>>
>>44694526
Why can't they even vomit two blotches on a map? How is making a fucking random original map to much work? Especially when the require quality is low and you don't need much stuff.
>>
Anyone have the one mocking the map of Europe as if it were a homebrew setting?
>>
OK /tg/ LISTEN UP
HERE'S A CHALLENGE
OPEN PAINT, DRAW QUICKLY A MAP OF A CONTINENT THAT'S NOT EUROPE

ARE YOU SKILLED ENOUGH ?
>>
>>44694526
Not gonna lie. This woulda gone over my head had my friend not pointed that out to me when I first played the game.
>>
>>44694308
>>44694526
They're not similar enough to Europe. They should be exact reproductions on parchment of T-in-O maps from the Dark Ages. Only those will satisfy me.
>>
>>44696408
The second one isn't similar?
Mate, flip the image 180 degrees. It is a direct copy
>>
>>44694308
there's far too many, but then again, the creators have a limit of imagination if they only use what they are familiar with, so I can't say as I blame them.

but its best to start from scratch anyways.

Okay but what if

what if

we flood the world?
>>
>>44698018
I love that sea-level rising basically just deletes Bangladesh specifically.
>>
>>44694308
I was ok with Warhammer Fantasy's Old World, (and whole world, for that matter). But it was one of my earliest settings. Now when I see it, I just think its just lazy.
>>
>>44694526
I'm probably an idiot, but this image looks like the eastern United States, with 2.5 Floridas, and the Great Lakes enlarged
>>
>>44698018
I'd be fine with this personally if there's at least some mild implication that the setting is some future-version of our world.
>>
>>44698051
And most of China. And basically all of the South in the States. It's almost like lowland areas are vulnerable to sea level rise.

Really though there's a lot about that map that could make for some fun campaign ideas. You've got a shitton more islands and archipelagos than you'd first expect, and most of those close to mainland. Plus look at all those seas! The Amazon, China, Siberia, even the Aussies get a new bigass lake in the middle of the Outback.
>>
It's fine. Most fantasy settings are anachronistic Europe with only the names changed anyway.
>>
>>44698018
Africa and middle east become superpowers. The white race dies out. World is turned to savagery.
>>
>>44698018
I'd much rather do an ocean-dry land reversal, with the Great Islands and the Hawaiian Lakes
>>
>>44698018
I like how africa is almost unchanged.

There an area in particular you'd like to zoom in on and Hexcrawl?
>>

I'm pretty sure dark ages parchment maps didn't have transparency layers and confirm/return console buttons on them.

I could be wrong.

Just once I'd like to see a fantasy campaign set in the southern hemisphere, so the players hear "you've got to head north", then gear up for cold weather on their way to a hotter climate

I might just be paranoid, but moving to NYC might have been a bad idea in the face of global warming.
>>
>>44699421
Hilariously, the geography of my current setting is fucked up to the point at which the cold weather is to the east.

North is badlands and volcanoes.

If it hits the Salinas valley, then you've also lost America's breadbasket, and with it a chunk of the world's walnut and almond crop.

Fruitbasket mostly. Grain staples are not California's specialty.

It's fruits, nuts, and veggies.
>>
>>44711543
With the South gone you'll lose a lot of other fruits and other crops too, but with that much more water you've probably got a lot of potential farmland all messed around. Breadbasket might be the same, but you might have fruits grown in Nevada or something.
>>
>>44694308
Too spiky/10
Other than that, do whatever.
>>
I have nothing against them.

If they're done well, with at least some originality, and complex enough instead of basing on streamlining, simplistic views and bland stereotypes, they are cool and what they lack in originality they gain in familiarity.

Unfortunately most are pretty much opposite.
>>
>>44698112
You're not an idiot; people have noticed the similarity before
>>
>>44698059
When Warhammer did it they also did it knowingly and there was a lot of satire/parody in it.
>>
>>44694308
I don't have problem with it (did it in my setting) because if you want to have a region with a somewhat simmilar history and climate to that of medieval europe (without saying 'lol magic') it has to resemble europe pretty closely.
Try making a map vastly different to europe, then working out regional climtes and cultures to reflect those climates and you will likely end up with something that doesn't at all resemble traditional fantasy (unless thats what you are going for).
