Any relatively cheap yet popular wargames? Basically poor mans Warhammer (either fantasy or 40k) is what I'm looking for.

Define poor. Like $50-$100? Lower? Higher?

Look for games with low model counts. Part of Warhammer's high cost is the high number of models being fielded.
Just buy the cheapest model and have them hold up tiny paper signs saying what unit they are along with a notecard with all the stats taped onto the bottom.
Wargames aren't cheap hobbies. Even the cheaper ones which need less miniatures, like Infinity, are still pricey.

Fo real. Infinity has some expensive models man, you just need less of them.

You'll want some skirmish game. Less models less money

If you want to play Warhammer, check out Kill Team, Regiments of Renown, Warbands, and Mordheim. They're all skirmish rules, so it's pretty cheap.

so, Battletech? I mean a typical lance is like four mechs, and for just a pickup game it's pretty normal for one lance (or less) to be your entire side.
hell nobody's even forcing you to buy the models for those four mechs; my starter set was dirt cheap and came with a bunch of little cardboard mech standups for pieces.

Kings of war from mantic is literally that
otherwise, go skirmish, like infinity or malifaux or something

battletech? x-wing?
you dont need many models to play. and you can buy box sets that got you sorta covered.
