the avatar is an NPC, and he's about 15, so right now he's a non factor in the game.

well Aang was told that he was the avatar ahead of schedule, otherwise he might not have known for a few more years. But I mean he's a non factor for the players currently, not like he's unimportant in the world.

Aang was told he was the Avatar when he was 12. Normally the Avatar is told of their lineage/duty when they turn 16. The Air Nomad elders told him early cause they feared (rightfully so) that the Fire Nation was starting to militarize their forces and begin to get ready to invade the Earth Kingdom and attack the Air Temples.
Korra knew she was the Avatar cause she could bend water, fire, and earth at like age 4, and spent basically the next 12 years training those three elements and struggling to unlock her airbending skills.
