"I disagree," you speak up. Heads turn to look at you; not all, but some. "The last time we took a 'wait and see' approach, we ended up having to change our entire way of life."
That stops a few of the elders in their tracks. No-one wants to have to repeat what happened last time.
"If we keep sitting on our hands, waiting to see what they do, we hand all initiative to them," you continue. "They're not as numerous as the strangers, so maybe they'll consider some kind of arrangement? I'm especially interested in how they managed to get goats to just follow them around, rather than fleeing at the first sign of a hunter..."
"You would be," mutters one of the elders, "But I see your point. Maybe it would be better to send someone to talk with them. Not you, Trym, at least not at first... You'd get to talking about their goats and nothing else would get done."
"Then again, the gods aid might be helpful," mentions another. "Maybe he should go?"

Again, the council is paralyzed until sleep and old age claims enough of them to agree to continue tomorrow. The following day, talks resume and it is eventually agreed that joining the first group or not should be up to you. By now, many elders are saying that meeting with the herders was what they supported all along, but that's fairly typical of them.

I don't like all the time and fuss with my family; my grandma had a small stroke; and now I'm sick so I'm fragile and tired (this quest won't run too long tonight) and hungry and dehydrated, but it hurts to swallow. I've got half a leftover pizza here I can't eat.

Beside that? Yeah, it was alright.

Damn, I'm sorry man, thanks for running what you can and I would suggest tea, herbal tea high in vitamin C and with some honey. I think I am one of the few Americans who holds to the idea that tea can in fact fix everything.
>>
>>44430709
except stomach wounds, tea fucks up stomach wounds.
>>
>>44430911

Everything fucks up stomach wounds, the stomach is a prissy bitch is what it is. Not as bad as the appendix though
>>
>>44430944
True, you would think that an organ thats only job is to serve as a repository for bacteria would be less prone to inflamtion and rupture at the least sign of a little blockage.
>>
You immediately put yourself forward to be a part of the group that meets the herders. The elders agree that a volunteer is probably better than the unwilling and accept. The rest of the day, you spend preparing and saying your goodbyes to your family. Come morning, Ebba doesn't want to let go of your legs.
"Ebba, I have to go..."
"Nuh-uh! I want you to stay!"
"I have to talk to those people with the goats that your mommy told you about. Are they bad people?"
"Nope. I just want you to stay with me!"
"I have to go."
"No! Stay!"
"Go."
"Stay!"
"Go."
"Stay!"
"Stay."
"Go!"
"Alright then, let me go."
Ebba unwinds her arms from around your legs and you kiss the top of her head before she realises she's been tricked. "Heeeey!" She laughs and gives you one more goodbye kiss before you head out.

A few of your clan are keeping watch at the river. Not many are fishing, with the herders within slingshot on the far side, but a few of the hunters crouch with javelins and slings, keeping an eye on them. The trouble is that the river here at the bend is wide and deep. You're in a group of seven men and women. One man is an elder.

What will you do?

>Swim the river
>Try to make a nest, like for funerals and float across
>Shout across the river
>Go upstream until you find the crossing point
>Call on Nila to lower the waters for you
>Try to lower the waters yourself, with magic

Reaching out for the magic in your heart, you direct it towards the river. You have a simple plan; if the river is shallow enough, you can just wade across. Bit-by-bit, you push an indentation into the water on your side of the bank, your hands outstretched, your brow furrowed and sweat beading on your skin. The water ripples and shivers, shaking under your pressure, as the effort builds and builds. Through your connection to the river, you suddenly feel Nila's alarm as she feels what you're trying to do. She desperately tries to stop you, but it's too late; you're already too committed. Pain roars in your head and magic burns in your veins like liquid agony! The river is slowly being pushed down, forming a narrow path for you, but you can barely stand upright and your vision is blackening! Even so, only one thought is foremost in your mind...

Why were you so STUPID as to ignore Nila's warning?! You can feel her now, trying to lend her strength to the effort, but even though she is rushing downstream, she's so distant and it may not be enough...

Power rages out of control through your body. For a brief instant, you feel everything align just as you want. The river parts and grows shallow; a path as wide as a man's shoulder forming, right to the other side..! Then all at once the pain returns, branding you for your arrogance in over-reaching your abilities! You can feel the insideous crawl of the black spiderweb veins creeping towards your chest. Nila's words echo in your mind, "You mustn't ever, EVER let them reach your heart!" For a split second, you panic. This is the day of your death; there can be no question!

But in the next instant, you reject such a fate. You are Trym, the shaman and godspeaker of your clan! You slew the wolf god and lead your people to plenty! You created slings and tamed wolves into companions for men! This will not be your end! Not here and not today! With a force of will that leaves your body feeling like every bone you possess has been shattered and re-made, you focus your spirit inwards. The spiderweb lines shift and move, crawling over your body, stabbing at your heart and seeking your life, but you will not let them! Yet all the same, they twist in your mental grasp, wriggling free like snakes. This is your judgement, your punishment for abusing powers beyond your understanding! A price must be paid! It must!

Suddenly, the serpents give a great heave and spring free from your grasp! Before you can respond, your entire world is consumed by pain that you have never dreamed in your darkest nightmares could be possible! Your skin is flayed from the inside out; your bones cracked in a fire and sucked for marrow; your heart and lungs filled with ice water colder than the most frigid winter river! You cry out in a screech of agony that rebounds from the walls of the valley and then... Everything goes dark.

Darkness brings no immediate relief from the anguish. You can still feel your body being ravaged by the burning lash of magic pushed too far. Your world remains shrouded as you are dimly aware of hands carrying you, the world spinning and lurching sickeningly. Something cold and soothing is slathered over your arms and body, over your neck and head, but it brings no relief from the pain that has pushed its way inside you. Voices you half-recognise speak words you cannot understand... Words of comfort, words of anger, words of fear and sorrow...

Over an unknowable span of time, during which you can neither move, nor speak, nor comprehend anything but a single, dire truth, that magic is nothing to be taken lightly, the pain slowly, oh-so-slowly subsides. Finally, the day comes when you hear life, birdsong, the sound of feet and the soft rustle of clothes. You painstakingly flex the fingers of your left hand, your right feeling oddly hollow and numb, as if you've slept on it... Your voice croaks as you try to call Beren's name. Immediately, you feel your woman at your side, sobbing her heart out and bringing a gourd of water to your lips. Your thirst is quenched, but something is wrong. Why can't you open your eyes? Why can't you see Beren, your home, your children?

Then it hits you... Through some miracle, you're alive, but you're blind. Forever more, the world will be nothing but darkness for you, deprived of light and colour, or the faces you know and love. This is the punishment, the price that had to be paid for your life.

>>44433734

>>
>>44433734
I know this sounds really dangerous (and pretty cocky) after we nearly died from trying to magically move a bit of water, but how about we try to gain some kind of magic vision?
>>
>>44433734

Well. We can make it work. We can still do this. Just need to figure it out. Also I kind of want to hear what happened with the tribe after that
>>
>>44433881
That would actually be pretty cool. I mean even if we didn't get another point of spirit, we can probably try praying to the forest god (I think) and try to reach out and sense the wills of other things.

>>
>>44434028

>>

>>44434085
>We are useless
>Lets not attempt to become useful again
>>
>>44434119
>>44434201

Totally, yes, let's work on becoming useful again. The solution however is not killing ourselves which I am pretty sure is what will happen if we keep fucking around with magic
>>
>>44434119
It was when we tried climb that horse that we were kicked in the face. Let's just see where this goes. IC I doubt Trym is all that eager to try his hand at magic again.
>>
>>44434243
Ok man let me just call the optometrist and see if he can give us a star trek visor.
>>
>>44434243
We're blind Anon. We can't invent as well anymore because we can't see what we're doing or what others would need. We can't move around without someone making sure we don't trip. Being blind in the stone age is a death sentence.
>>
>>44434250
We ARE Trym though. Trym is a man who has at least 14 voices floating around in his head guiding his decision making process.
>>
>>44434271

Well I was just blinded from using magic too much again and that was after the first time backfired and almost killed me as well. You know what'll fix this. More magic, my god I'm a genius.
>>
>>44434298
> splitting a river in half is the same thing as trying to heal our-self
Not to say one is easier than the other.
>>
>>44434335
there's also the fact that using the geode should greatly lower the amount of energy we need to expend.
>>
Well, whatever we do in regards to our eyes, should the concensus be that we try to fix them, can we at least ask someone more familiar with it for a go ahead. What ever you do, do not mention any of this to Nila for now. For obvious reasons.
>>
Votes called.
>>
>>44434290

We are still the shaman though, we still have the closest communication with the spirits of anyone in the tribe. Hell we just became a cliche by become a blind shaman from overstepping our bounds with magic. We are still useful there and need to prove it and we're not going to prove it by not learning our lesson and dying. We need to talk to the spirits first and be humble about our mistake. Maybe a little ways down the road they can help
>>
>>44434350
I'm all for using charms but I am kind of worried about our crafting ability at the moment. Maybe we should practice making crafts before we use our precious geode. And I mean hey, if this all works out in the end we'll have more points in crafting.
>>
>>44434431
I meant using the Geode as is as a magical battery. not making it into anything but expending it to fix our eyes.
>>
>>44434431
Oh. Then yeah, lets do this. While wearing the charm of healing.
>>
>>44432326
I bet you feel pretty dumb right now
>>
>>44434497

Can we please not jump straight to that. Let's talk to the spirits first at the very least
>>
>>44434561
Nope. Twig boat was a stupid idea. This was a stupid idea that was just crazy enough to seem like it might work. But hey, you just gotta roll with the punches.
>>
>>44434591
oh of course. RWB already called the votes, I'm just thinking about the future.
>>
>>44434602

You've got a weird definition of just crazy enough
>>
With great hesitation and difficulty, you rise from your bed. What was once a simple act for you causes you to grasp blindly, second-guessing your every movement. Beren takes your arm and guides you, step by faltering step. You jolt slightly in shock, as your two young daughters take your other hand in theirs. It feels muted and still not-quite-there.
"The river," you say, your strength still not fully returned to you. "I have to- Nila..."
You cannot see Beren, but you can hear the hitch in her voice. "Children... Take your father to the river. I... Need to look after Noh."
Before you can ask what's wrong, she leaves your side, the void left by her lack of presence cold and unwelcome. Ebba and Sera take your hands in theirs and slowly guide you to the river, step by terrifying, unknown step. You can hear the clan whispering too, muttering about what can only be you. On your way, you find that you can still move your right arm, but to your shoulder, you've lost much of the feeling in it and your fingers.

Finally, you leave them behind and feel the brush of long grass against your thighs and hands. The sound of running water and the soft chirp of insects comes next and your daughters slow to a stop.
"We're here, da..." says Sera, quietly. You can't hear any fishermen, strangely enough... Not even the few who were here last time.
"Are we alone?" you ask, the sheer scale of your disability starting to dawn on you.
You hear the soft movement of Sera's hair. She must have nodded. "There's no-one else here."
You hesitantly take a step forward and kneel, as you feel your feet crunch into the course, gritty sand of the river's edge. You crawl forward on your hands and knees, until you feel water lapping against your fingers and you call, your voice quiet. "Nila? Nila, are you there?"

Silence greets you.

You try again, putting a little of your spirit into it this time. "Nila, please, answer me."

Again, silence.
>>
>>44434671
"just crazy enough to seem like it might work"
>seem like
>>
>>44434708
"Nila, please..! Please, I know I was-" Anything would be better than this. You'd take any kind of anger and ire over this simple, mute rejection. "Please..."

Nothing but the cool flow of water over your hands answers you.

Burning tears of shame sting your eyes and cheeks, as your head drops. She TOLD you the price of abusing magic and like an arrogant fool, you thought yourself immune to any harm. "Nila, PLEASE!" you cry, your voice breaking. "Please, just say anything-! I did wrong, I know! I just..."
"I-I think mommy is mad at you, Daddy," Ebba quietly whispers.

Overhead, you hear the cawing of a crow, which sounds horribly like the mocking laughter of someone amused at the plight of the great, wrought by their own hands.

You have never felt so alone, so abandoned, in your whole life.
>>
>>44434742
>Overhead, you hear the cawing of a crow
of fucking course he would be here to laugh at our expense.
>>
>>44434742
ugh great now we're going to have to figure out this healing thing on our own. Like hell I'm accepting this fate like some pussy ass bitch.
>>
Damnit, just got here. Fuck RWB, if magic was going to get us fucking maimed regardless of success, then it shouldn't be a fucking option. It was a trap option doomed to fail and we'd have no idea to gauge our limit. In short, fuck you
>>
>>44434880
Bitch please. It was IC to try it and it failed. Don't blame the QM for our own mistakes even if you weren't there to vote.
>>
>>44434880
>We've been told numerous times not to fuck with magic
>Last time we almost lost our lives

We voted for it (well, not I), and now we'll have to deal with the consequences
>>
>>44434742
I guess the magic boner was greater than the water-wiafu boner. :^)
>>
>>44434911
Sure, trying magic again should be an option, but if it's bound to fucking fail then the DC should be known. There's a reason dice checks are stated up front and it's fucking shitty to have no idea we'd fail from the get go
>>
>>44434971
What? Why should we know the DC to something we've never done before?
>>
>>44434971

Look, it's already happened and it's not like we can go back and change it. We just have to move forward from here. Which in my opinion involves talking to the spirits again. Not asking for our eyesight back, possibly ever. Learning more about magic from the spirits, using them to help our tribe and then making sure we pass that knowledge down to probably Ebba but really whomever shows an aptitude with the spirits
>>
>>44434926
We were told not to go over our limit, not dabble with magic ever. If not fucking with magic means not experimenting with no margin of success then it needs to be said up front.
>>
>>44435014
Because if there's no margin for success then it needs to be said. It's like 'hey, its not within your means to learn this thing', tons of game systems and quests do this up front before rolling
>>
>>44434971
>>44434880
You were told by Nila about the risks. She made it ABUNDANTLY clear what over-stepping your limits would mean.

I put the option there, because it WAS an option. It wasn't a GOOD one, but not every decision someone makes is the smart one and not every choice will lead to success. You were WARNED about fucking with magic and you decided to go with it anyway. This is what choosing your own adventure means. I will not hold your hand through this; sometimes you can and WILL make the wrong decision and depending on the stakes, you WILL pay for it. Likewise, you will not be told numerically how hard something is - you have to figure it out on your own, much like in real life, there's no handy numbers to tell you that you have a good chance of fucking this up.

Now, that will be it for tonight. I don't want to stay up too late, as I want this foul lurgy expelled from my body as soon as possible.

This marks the end of a chapter in Trym's history however! So if you've been paying attention, you'll know what that means! That's right: Next thread (or tomorrow morning, if the thread is still alive) will start with a TIME SKIP!

And yes, by the way... Had Trym died as a result of his magical fuckery, you would have continued playing as one of your children.
>>
>>44434971
I get what you're saying and I find myself thinking that it is kind of stupid to have a roll option, that was given by the GM, that was bound to fail, even on a crit success. But shit happens, and RWB is a good GM, so there's not a point in complaining about it any longer.
>>
>>44435087
Thanks for running, Time skip should really be interesting.
>>
>>44435027
Dude, we tried to lower the water level of a river. That's not "dabbling", that's pretending to be Moses Jr.
>>
>>44435087
Thanks for running.
I will fix those eyes if it kills me.
>>
>>44435027
>>44435093
You were told to start small, like minor blessings and healing for your clan.

Draining a river to cross to the other side is NOT starting small! If you couldn't catch some fish, there is no way you would be able to achieve that. The moment you rolled, you weren't rolling for success, but to not balls it up so horribly you die.
>>
>>44434926
That was due to a critical failure I thought, that's how RWB seemed to imply when he quoted the one we rolled last time. Then Nila taught us some, and we critically succeeded in our roll this time. The circumstances were different
>>
>>44435087
Thank you for running RWB. Has this soiled our reputation with the spirits?
>>
>>44435143
Honestly though like I said near the beginning I thought we were just going to calm the waters to make it easier to cross, I didn't expect us to pull a Moses.
>>
>>44435087

Thanks for running man, I hope you get better soon. Looking forward to the fallout and the new character
>>
>>44435143
I just got here, I'm not even mad. This will make gameplay and narrative interesting, and we might even learn some cool oracle shit. Either way, fisherman and Hunter just became pretty worthless, we need to spec into wiseman or something.
>>
>>44435183
So be it. We will use the magics of man. Fire, Forged Iron, Blood, and Bread.
>>
Oh gods no, we may be blind but surly we can work out something, we are cunning, but im sure this will taint our peoples view of magic. So long as during the time skip we stay in character (a caring man whom would do anything to seek forgiveness from his ethereal lover.)

I like to imagine he goes on some pilgrimage where he seeks out each spirit in turn before fading into myth, the man whom became the very concept of a Legend. He is the first legend a man who did strange and sometimes impossible things, he faded into myth his end unknown there are many suspected ends, but no one knows. Whatever it is he became something more the very spirit of mankind, endlessly reaching, its never enough, that drive to more forward whatever the cost.
>>
It'd have been better for MC to die than to become blind to be honest
>>
>>44441765
At least he can be built into the world still, would have been a lame as fuck end. At least now there are options, maybe w can hear what happened to him, him seeking the River Spirit to say he is sorry for reaching too far. Maybe him going to the Wolf Spirit and going on a quest to regain his sight, kinda like Orion in Greek mythos. He could become the basis of an entire mythos, the first part that creates th idea of myths. He is our Gilgamesh.
>>
>>44441779
>would have been a lame as fuck end
Better than the shitty drama that is incoming.

drama makes a character, besides we will be playing as someone else so you wont even suffer through it. we could peas together his story, hell imagine if another character goes on some journey to find him, that weird old hermit in the wilds or something.
>>
Four years pass as you slowly grow used to being unable to see. According to Beren, your eyes have been turned completely and unsettlingly black and the marks on your right arm refuse to face, scarring you halfway past your elbow. Given how it seems to scare both your family and the rest of your tribe, you take to wearing a blindfold across your eyes and a lopsided cape that hides your arm. At least you have lost none of your strength or mobility along with your feeling, but unable to see, you are no worse than useless on the hunt. You have to learn to define things by touch and by sound and the first thing you re-learned was Beren's face. You pretended not to notice the tears.

The wolf-dogs, oddly enough, prove a great help during this time. In your clan's wanderings, those who were stricken blind or otherwise crippled, were a drain on the clan's resources and were quietly left behind, no-one speaking much of their fate. You presumed that among the wild and savage society of the wolves, it would be much the same, but they not only still accept you as their alpha, but take to nudging you as you try to find your way around, guiding you away from obstacles and dangers. They are not the only one of your discoveries that potentially saves your life either; the fields continue to increase, feeding your family when you can't hunt. It's fortunate, as Elia tries his best, but is woefully inadequate for keeping any more than himself and his woman from hunger. Farming and grinding the grain is hard, time-consuming work, but there is now just enough each year to keep your family from starvation. Mesut has indeed taken over the harvesting and handing out the grain in gourds and the duty (and the power that comes with it) has given him much stature in the clan.

Friggin finally, I can post again! What the hell happened?

Thankfully, your relationship with the gods hasn't been damaged by your blunder. Awak continues to laugh at you every time you go to make offerings, but the rest of the gods are not so rude. You suspect they regard you as somewhat foolish, but as long as they are made offerings, they are content and continue to watch over the clan. The Strangers have also taken to making offerings as well, you notice, especially to Ursa, the bear. His speech is improving markedly, although it's smattered with as many of the Strangers words as yours. Apparently, in addition to teaching them how to mimic his strength, Ursa has been teaching them how to find good honey as well; the strangers coat themselves from head to toe in mud, before breaking open beehives and stealing the golden honeycomb within. Despite the risks, it's a practice that soon catches on among your clan - honeycomb is sweet and rich, a far cry from your usual fare and that justifies the stings, at least for some. The only exception to the spirits acceptance of you, is Nila. In four years, you've never once heard her voice, or felt the cool touch of her skin. She refuses to answer your call and offerings you make are always left, even as the others are accepted. You're not sure if she's angry at you, disappointed, or just grieving for your foolishness, but the result is the same.

Your children have grown up well, at least! Sera is now twelve and learning to cast a spear or a stone, whenever she isn't helping Beren winnow the grain or grind the flour. She's maybe a few years from adulthood still, but her sharp features already have caught the eye of some of the boys her age... Or at least so she brags to you. The fact that you can no longer see your children aging cuts deeper than you like to admit, but they seem to realise that and do not talk about it for long.
>>
>>44442158
Ebba is now ten and just as placid as ever. It is she who spends most of her free time describing things to you, picking out colours and lights you can no longer appreciate, giving a little more detail to what you can feel with your left hand. Your son, Noh, is too young to remember a time you could ever see clearly. Five years old, he just accepts that you cannot see him and is constantly touching your legs, "So you know where I am and don't squash me!" As the chubbiness of his infant years starts to fall from his face, you can just about tell that he's going to look rather drawn, taking more from his mother's hooked face than your own. Strange for someone with such melancholy features to be so happy all the time, but you suppose that's one of the benefits of childhood.

It is now late spring. You have enough food stored to last your family until early fall. Grain keeps a lot better than even smoked meat does, but keeping it in gourds is a little limiting.

Now you've regained enough of your dexterity to try, you want to make your mistake up to Nila. Her rejection is half of the pain you feel, easily equal to losing your sight. But how could you possibly..? The memory of the glowing, crystal-filled rock comes to you as the solution for your worries. You might just be able to turn it into something worthwhile...

The process is slow, extremely slow. The crystal snaps and sheers at awkward angles that force you to work around it, into the stony shell. You can't afford to waste a single chip, as you carefully scrape away with flint and bone tools, pausing every few seconds to run your fingertips over the surface and make sure it's still perfect. Ebba sits by you most evenings, as you retreat into your own, tiny world of darkness. Your focus is so great, every sense in your body seems to be trying to make up for your blackened eyes. The heat of the fire; the scratch of your clothes; the path of a bead of sweat down your neck... The almost imperceptible sound of Ebba's breathing; the smell of the food Beren cooks; the scrape-scrape of your tools over the precious stone. "I can see colour," Ebba speaks up, softly, so as not to break your concentration. "Where you're scraping it smooth, it's showing layer after layer of colour. It's beautiful!"

You smile and show your daughter your creation so far. She carefully turns it over, never taking it from your hands, as she looks closely at the slim waist and the long, finned tail.
"Is it going to be my mother?" she asks.
"It is," you nod. "I hope this will show her how sorry I am for ignoring her warnings."
>>
>>44442970
Ebba regards the small idol for a little longer, then nods, her hair brushing ticklishly against your arm. "I think she'll like it. She'll have to talk to us again after this."
"She hasn't been speaking to you either?" you ask, surprised. "Why? You've done nothing wrong."
"Mother and you are fighting," she explains. "But you're sorry and my mother won't hear it. I'm not saying she HAS to forgive you; you were REALLY stupid, pa... But she should at least listen. It's childish! So I'm not talking to her until she stops acting like a baby."
You blink behind your blindfold, a hollow thud echoing in your chest. When did your little baby girl suddenly start acting so adult? There's times when she seems more mature than her sister even...

Despite your best effort, your tools mean the small statue is not finished by the time summer comes. What you have started looks beautiful, according to Ebba and you can tell by touch that you're on the right path, but you just need more time.

Fishermen say the wandering herders have returned to the valley. Your spectacular display frightened them away last time, but now they've returned. Apparently, they look wary and hold their hunting weapons tightly. The elders are considering sending a small group to show you mean no harm.

C'mon, Britfag, a lot of people would've just lurked and waited for the next vote.
>>
>>44443765
I dunno, I guess I just saw the vote as atypical...

You probably caused enough problems last time with your display of magic... You decide it's probably better if you didn't try to accompany the small group that heads upstream to find the ford the next day. Instead, you keep yourself busy by fishing. Without your sight, you dare not use a fishing spear, for fear of catching someone's foot. Instead, you simply dip your left hand into the water, wait until you feel the disturbance of a fish swimming nearby and immediately smack it out, onto the bank like a beat. Before humans learned how to shape flint, you think, this must have been how we did everything... Just by hand and cunning. You've come a long way, you reflect.

Amazingly enough, either luck is on your side, or you're a natural at this, as soon you've amassed a pile almost as respectable as if you'd used a spear all along! Even Elia and Galit are impressed when you return with your daughters and dogs guiding you.
"That's actually quite amazing," Galit admits. "Maybe you could teach Elia some time."
"I doubt it," your brother shakes his head. "I'm getting much too slow for that sort of thing, these days." It's true that, at 40 years old, he's soon going to be considered an Elder.
"Pa's hands are very fast," Ebba nods. "Pa, you should try grabbing birds out of the air next!"
"Birds are too jumpy for that," disagrees Sera, a little sulkily. "I've tried! They just fly away as you try to sneak up on them..."

You've gathered enough food for three, but that still leaves one person going hungry before the harvest comes in.

The group sent to the herders returns, saying that while they're wary, they aren't hostile. They even agreed to trade goat meat, skins and bone, in exchange for grain. Given that Mesut controls the clan's grain, he readily agrees to this! The first signs of wealth start to appear...

Fucking hell, I think I fell asleep there. What is wrong with me? I must be getting old

The clan's attitude towards you is unusual... A good deal of your mysticism was stripped away by your accident and subsequent blindness, but the marks it left on you cause some of the more nervous of your kin to recoil outright. This makes information gathering somewhat difficult, but overall, you get the opinion the clan is relatively happy. The gods haven't turned their backs on them due to your mishap (even Nila still accepts offerings from the rest of the clan) and despite initial reluctance, everyone agrees that not having to worry about the herds being hunted out of existence is definitely a plus. There's still some stigma surrounding "Eating grass like a dumb animal," as some of the more hidebound elders put it, but by and large, people are just glad to have enough to eat. With plenty of food, there's more room for children too, so within a few years, the clan should see a veritable population explosion!

With Noh quickly growing enough to become a burden on your food, you try to look to the fields to expand, but your attention is too divided. Without any kind of direction, the workers you can assemble to expand their fields and yours soon drift away to their own devices. You, meanwhile continue work on the statuette for Nila. You've never worked with something like the geode before... The smooth, very slightly abrasive surface of the river-rounded stone gives way to something glossy and almost slippery where you polish it.

Little by little, you grind away protruding crystals, Ebba carefully collecting the glittering dust. That blessed girl has become your eyes, telling you how the powdered crystal sparkles like the stars as she carefully catches it on a smooth sheet of leather and stores it in a gourd for later use. Finally, the offering is complete. You've never made anything as fine as this and with your sight gone, it is likely you never will again, but your sorrow, regret and love all went into making this statue, guiding your hands until you have shaped the geode into a coiled likeness of Nila, in her form of a half-fish, half-woman. Your entire family is quietly awed by your work.
"If not for you giving this to Nila," Beren remarks, "That would be passed down to our grandchildren and beyond. It's beautiful..!"

You have captured Nila's likeness well (if slightly stylistically). You have crafted a Small Masterwork Stone Idol.

Yeah but ever since we became blind we've been worrying nonstop about getting back into Nila's good graces without considering how this tragedy has effected our loyal wife. I think Beren deserves something, a personal crafted gift and perhaps a heart to heart talk.

FACKOFF YA CUNTS! I DON'T DO MORNINGS!

A statue like this needs a name... There's almost something alive inside it, but not quite. Knowing the emotions you poured into, there's only one appropriate name. You carefully wrap the Fool's Solace in soft leathers and stand, telling your daughters to remain behind this time. You take only a handful of the dogs with you, for guidance and protection. Making your way to the river's edge, you sit quietly until the sun begins to dip and the fishers take in their nets and spears to head home. A few call out to you, asking if you'll need help, but you re-assure them. One of the very few advantages of your injury is that darkness no longer holds the terror for you, that it would for any right-thinking human.

Alone at last, you un-wrap your precious bundle, running your fingers over it one last time to ensure it is perfect. You carefully place it on the altar the clan has set up, the river just lapping at its lowest stones. The soft glow of the statue's exposed crystal gently illuminates the humbler offerings around it, not that you can see any such thing. You sink to your knees and for what feels like the thousandth time, recite how sorry you are, how much you want to hear something, anything from her... And unlike hundreds of appeals before, you are answered...

"Why?" You didn't even hear her emerge from the river; there must have barely been a ripple. "Why did you do it, after I warned you not to?"
You can't read her tone, but you can tell Nila is struggling to hold back some kind of emotion. "I-"
"Did all of my care, all of my affection for you really mean so little that you'd just ignore me?" she spits, interrupting your attempt at explanation. "I gave you my first and only child to raise; I fed you; taught you; aided you and you repay me by ignoring everything I said and the spirit in which I gave it, throwing your own life away?!" You can't see the blow coming, nor brace for it, so the heavy, razor-edged smack of her tail and fin across the side of your face knocks you sprawling. You hear your dogs start to bark and snarl in defense of their 'alpha' but suddenly, a split-second of heart-stopping dread washes through you, blotting out any kind of reason but the piercing, ice-cold thought that you need to RUN. Just as quickly as it comes however, even as you're rising shakily to your feet, it passes and you hear the dogs yelping and whining as they back down.

The cold, clawed, webbed feeling of Nila's hand closes about your neck, not quite tight enough to strangle you, but more than enough to lift you clean off the ground, your feet kicking in the air as your hands scrabble at her grip. She shakes you like a doll, screaming into your face. "YOU! STUPID! THOUGHTLESS! SELFISH! THICK-HEADED! ARROGANT! MORTAL IDIOT!" You're weightless for a moment as she hurls you through the air, slamming into the bank with enough force that you feel one of your ribs crack. You struggle to regain your breath, as you hear her slither towards you at a horrifying pace. You've never fully appreciated before the gulf between a new, nameless, ill-formed god and something that has had time to grow into itself; it's like comparing an infant to a grown hunter!

So basically /tg/ is Magicka.

BANANA.
>>
>>44450029
That shit with Erebus was fucking mind boggling stupid. Why did anyone think consuming our progenitor was a good idea?
>>
>>44450366
We love you too Nila.
>>
>>44450029
>I put on the mask
No one cared about BQ until we put on the mask.
>>
>>44450366
Well fuck, rub it in why don't you, we're already fucking blind.
>>
>>44450366
Slithering, eel-like coils wrap around you from your waist down, Nila herself pinning your arms to your body. Your head starts to swim and in a moment of airless levity, you think that you're lucky your vision can't get any darker... Until you hear the sobbing.

Nila is sobbing, wailing, bawling into you as you realise that, through some miracle, her anger is at last spent. You can't even wriggle your arms free to pat her back, as she screams into your shoulder, venting four years of pent-up anger, frustration and worry. Little by little, the coils loosen and shift into legs; her cold river-water blood becoming red, warm and human. You can feel the light and warmth of the sun slip over the horizon and still she continues to cry.

Finally, after what seems like an eternity, you feel her hands reach up and gently pull at the blindfold covering your eyes. At once, you snap them shut, afraid of what she'll do if she sees them, but you feel Nila's hand on your cheek, her grief-wracked and broken voice imploring you, "Please... Let me see."
The sight of your broken, blackened eyes brings yet further tears to her own. If only... If only you could look into them once more, see that strange honey-amber yellow... Something less physical than your rib shatters inside you and you join her in your mutual misery.

Once eyes are dried, she at last releases you and delicately fixes your blindfold. "No more, Trym," she says with a shaking voice. "No more. Not ever again. I can't take this... Call and... A-and I'll answer, but I'll never again lo-" You hear her voice muffle as she presses a hand to her mouth and stifles a new sob. "I was an idiot to think a mortal would ever understand..." Your ears twitch at the soft scrap of stone on stone, as she picks up A Fool's Solace. "...It's beautiful," she says at length. "I've never seen its equal. I shall treasure it, always."
>>
>>44450558
For a half-moment, your heart can almost see, almost FEEL her clutching the precious statue to her breast.
"Nila-" you try to begin, but you are once again cut off.
"Just go," she breathes. "Please... Just... Go."

You haul yourself to your feet, wincing at the pain in your chest and click your tongue for your dogs, who hesitantly approach, still wary of the supernatural terror Nila instilled in them.
"Trym?" she says, just as you start to walk away.
"Yes?" You turn your head, as if to look back, praying and hoping against all reason to see her just once... Only to be met, as ever, with darkness, without even a star's gleam for light.
"...I forgive you," she whispers. A soft splash breaks the night's quiet. A fish jumping, or..? You wait on, counting your heartbeats for time. At over a hundred, you are forced to realise that Nila is gone.
>>
>>44450558
Dammit Red, this is too much
>>
>>44450513
This isn't really about rubbing it in. This is more about how she feels.

>>44450466
You may, but she can't... Not anymore. Not after what happened to you.

>>44450639
It is early autumn. One of your family will go hungry unless you can find some food for them, somehow.

What will you do?
>Hunt the aurochs 1d10 (Strength -Blind)
>Fish in the river 1d10 (Skill +Fisher +Trait -Blind)
>Explore the forest
>Explore up the valley
>Explore the hills
>Try and investigate something new
>Make something special
>See what the mood of the clan is like, talk to people and get to know them (free)
>Change your active jobs and examine your inventory (free)
>Try to summon a new god
>Make offerings to a god
>Bring more land under cultivation
>Other
>>
>>44450558
>>44450639

So she'll never love us again? Doesn't seem like she forgives us
>>
>>44450677
>You may, but she can't... Not anymore. Not after what happened to you.
well good fucking job guys, you broke her
>>
>>44450677
Damn, I'm sobbing. Badly. And this is pretty much my first time I'm here. Thanks for the feels to begin with.

Also, I would like to
>Fish in the river
We're still somewhat good at it, right?
>>
>>44450677
>we still have to get food despite being blind
Where's our welfare pay?
Being blind is making me laugh more than I expected.
>>
>>44450712
My ex forgave me for my mistakes, too. Still, she doesn't love me anymore because of them. Feels bad, but is completely reasonable.
>>
>>44450677
>Try to summon a new god
We need a new God, the God of Man
>>
>>44450677
Really? Then >>44442240
was right, because this isn't being with Nila. I wouldn't call this forgiveness either. Fuck, this really puts a bad taste in my mouth
>>
I guess some girls can't handle stuff when the going gets tough, it's a sad kinda feel.

Maybe we could talk to the Stag, go for the pride wounded man is ready to accept his scolding and seeks advice route, maybe ask if they know a way to restore our sight? Maybe get more magic rock and make an eye outta it or maybe some paint that goes over and around our eyes.
>>
>>44450797
Backing this. If we don't, someone else will.
>>
>>44450677
>practice magic
>>
Drawfag here, holy shit what did I miss! Well I guess I got some chronicling to do. This may take a bit not home yet. Wonder if we have seen Sqode about of late and what he thinks?
>>
>>44450677
I think the time has finally come to ask for help... As demeaning as it can be, we need it
>>
>>44450819
We should become that God. Forgive a quest for each of our deities to get a little power and become more spirit than man, recover our eyes, reclaim all.
>>
>>44450889
Imagine the fables about our relationship with nila
>>
>>44442291
>>44450677
We were trying to get back together, not forgive us. She beat the shit out of a blind man and took the statue that we made while fucking blind, and all we get is a 'I forgive you but don't actually?' Fuck that, she's still being childish and that isn't forgiveness
>>
>>44450677
>demand welfare pay from the elders and tell them to check their privileges
>>
>>44450889
I like this idea
>>
>>44450925
I like THIS idea
>>
>>44450925
don't forget to dye our hair with blue berry juice.
>>
It'd interesting if we started the common myth element of losing sight to obtain knowledge/wisdom
>>
>>44450889
This sounds like the perfect end to our final arc someday. Maybe Red will think about this.
>>
>>44450889
A blind cripple god huh? God of the year award. GOTY™
>>
She beat the shit out of us and took our shit that we offered as an olive branch. What exactly is forgiving about that? Why should we even call her? We're barely better then we started
>>
>>44451019
Think about Hephaistos or Tyr. Hephaistos was badly crippled and Tyr was blind and missing a hand, if I remember correctly. Still, they were gods. And not just some minor ones.
>>
>>44451019
Who loves crafting stuff. And hooked up with the hot God, whom will likely hook up with someone else now. I thibk we all know whom we would be
>>
>>44451019
Blind gods are a thing in many religions.
>>
>>44451040
Meant to quote >>44450795
Reasonable this is not
>>
>>44450919

Well what the fuck did you want to happen, break ups suck man and shit doesn't get fixed because you want it to
>>
>>44450925
>>44450967
Aha. Ahahaha. Ahaha. Hahaha. Ha.

No. SJWs wouldn't survive in the stone age. They contribute nothing and drain the resources and patience of everyone around them.

Honestly, they'd be shocked: When a society has less to go around, people tend to be very egalitarian. Notice how there's no legal or societal difference between men and women in your clan (yet)? That's because everyone works, or dies. If you lose a part of the group, you risk losing all of it. So everyone helps, everyone pulls their own weight.

>>44450919
>>44451040
Humans are complicated creatures and gods even moreso. She vented her anger and frustration on a 'cause' but didn't finish it, as she knew you weren't honestly to blame (at least to her). She didn't scorn you or turn you away; she accepted the gift you made for her as an apology and she forgave you.

But (Spoiler alert) she's hurt. She trusted you and you just blithely disregarded her, showing an utter lack of concern for her advice and feelings. Then you nearly died and she was TERRIFIED you would. She did her best to save you and you were still crippled. The fact that you nearly died also hurt her, even as it hurt you. She doesn't want to risk that hurt again, especially as you're a mortal. She'll just return after death - you can't.

>>44450997
I'll certainly consider it, but you don't even know if it's POSSIBLE yet, in general, or for Trym specifically.
And while I'm sorry I may have broken a few hearts, at least I know my writing's effective. Nila may not be lost to you, or to humanity forever, but it's going to take some time for these scars to fade. Keep in mind, she's still mentally rather young. Human thoughts and emotions are less than a decade old to her.
>>
>>44451099
Not to get our shit beat in and walk away with nothing? I'd have preferred if she just refused our statue and told us she'd never see us. That's like taking a dude's jewelry that he gave to help mend the relationship and then break up with us anyway. She didn't have to accept
>>
Can Trym just die already so we can start over?
>>
>>44451130
So... Let me get this straight.. We just fucked, and had a baby with what is essentially a kid? A god kid yeah but still... We are become pedobear! Destroyer of tight anuses
>>
>>44451130
I like it.

Ok let's ask some spirits for help as to become more spirit like or if such a thing could be possible. I think I feel the Crows clawing at us... Darn it all
>>
>>44451194
In time anon, in time. There's still plenty of chances to turn things around. Or fuck up worse

Of course, if you WANT him to die right now, vote for it! If it gets a majority, we'll skip ahead to a child. That's how this quest goes; one bloodline throughout history.

>>44451195
Well, she has an adult's capacity to process information and input, but not the experience. It's hard to draw a parallel to humans, as much as it's sometimes hard to forget, she ISN'T one!

If it helps, remember she's been the spirit of that river and every river-beastie in it for thousands upon thousands of years. She knew EXACTLY what doing the do was about!
>>
>>44451194
Not like this. He did well over a lot of time and because of a 'minor mistake' that even a critical success couldn't prevent from happening won't stop at least me from trying to get this guy back on the tracks again. He will be alright, better than ever before. Trust the dice and our decisions, dude. It worked for sixteen and a half thread.
>>
>>44451253
I will actually vote to sabotage as much as possible
