I have question for anyone willing, can you actually play as a undead in DnD? Has anyone here done this before? pic sort of related

The Necropolitan template is the cheapest way to become a playable undead, and it's an uncommon but not super rare choice of character.

Usually DMs see the long list of immunities undead get and get spooped, but the few who realize how little that shit matters compared to being a level behind the group generally OK it (give or take setting/party cohesion reasons, which of course take precedence).

Assuming 3.5, Libris Mortis has undead monster classes for PC use.

No you can't, and no one ever tried to.
The last time someone attempted shit like that, Gary invented the Cleric.

Libris Mortis for 3.5 had plenty of undead options for PCs. I played a mummy once. It was coo'.

4e has multiple options
Revnant is undead
Vryloka are sort-of-undead
Warforged and shardmind can function well enough if you just change the word "constrct" to "undead' and change any resistance to necrotic and any vulnerability to radiant.

Nah, an undead's immunities blow a tiefling's out of the water for the same level adjustment. But not getting con to hp/fort save? That's a real price to pay.

Vampires count as undead don't they? People roll as those all the time unless you have one of those DMs that hate players who play as anything non-human/elf.

Of course! But as always, check with your DM.

Now as for official rules, 3.0, 3.5, and possibly 4 all have some sort of playable undead, not in core though.

I am currently playing a skeleton ranger in 5e, DM let me trade the ranger magics for necromancy of the same level, pretty balanced actually.
I won't be able to raise the dead till about level 14 or 15.
