That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Lightsaber" bullshit that's going on in the Star Wars system right now. Shock Batons deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine First Order Riot Control Stormtrooper's Shock Baton in Imperial Space for 2,400,000 Galactic Credits (that's about $2) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my Shock Baton.
First Order smiths spend years working on a single shock baton and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.
Shock Batons are thrice as sharp as a Jedi's swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a lightsaber can cut through, a shock baton can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a Shock Baton could easily bisect a Mandalorian wearing full plate Cortosis Weave with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why the Galactic Republic never bothered conquering The First Order? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Stormtroopers and their shock batons of destruction. Even in the Clone Wars, Kaminoan Clone soldiers targeted the men with the shock batons first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Shock batons are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Shock Batons:
(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d12 Damage
19-20 x4 Crit
+2 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork
(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
2d10 Damage
17-20 x4 Crit
+5 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork
Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Shock Batons in real life, don't you think?
tl;dr = Shock Batons need to do more damage in Star Wars, see my new stat block.

if TR8R had tried spinning, which is a good trick, would he have beaten Finn?
>>
>>44405436
The weapon was spinning- was it as good as a trick as having the wielder spin?
>>
>>44405436
He was going to beat Finn like the minority he is until Han saved the traitors life.
>>
>>44405444

Spinning is a good trick but the high ground is far more important.

While TR-8R had the high ground, Han Solo was wielding a bowcaster, a weapon associated with Wookies, who have the high ground against humans. Normally humans cannot wield a wookie's bowcaster, but Chewbacca is a good friend. This is why TR-8R won against Finn but lost to Han.
>>
>>44405444
TR8R was obviously the chosen one, of course he would have won. Of course, the power of multiculturalism defeated him because he's white. Get with the times, it is the current year.
>>
>>4405491
Tell me about Chewbacca, is he a big guy? Who paid him to arm Han Solo?

It was merely a set back, we all know that TR8R is still alive and will be back in second film with dual shock baton
>>
Well don't disclude TR-8R had a bad feeling about this, but he charged and defeated the TRAITOR anyway, he is the true hero in all of this.
>>
>>44405491

Not to mention the fact that Han shot first, before TR-8R could ready himself.

Which brings us to another point. Han's ability to shoot first allowed him to get some cheap wins by catching his opponent off guard. In EsB, when in Cloud City, Han attempts to shoot Vader first, but Vader blocks the shot with his bare hands.

Is it because Han lost the moral high ground by shooting first, thus confirming the power of the high ground?
>>
>>44405611
By Jove, I think you're on to something old chap.

>>44405611
Nah, Vader was just a superior villain and neu sith lite will never be as strong as Darth Vader.

>>
>>44405688
While Grievous had the high ground, and was a master of spinning, Obi-Wan shot first.
>>
>>44405611

It's because Vader was standing some feet away from Han, which due to distance made Han appear smaller than he actually is. Vader had the high ground in that situation.

It's why Vader was so eager to get Luke into the carbonite pit; the only way Vader can remove Luke's moral high ground is freeze him into a horizontal slab of carbonite, which is naturally on the low ground.
>>
>>44405710

Obi-Wan had the high ground from a certain point of view, but he was also using a brutish laser rifle, which are cowardly weapons by nature and allow low ground advantage over high ground opponents.
>>
>>44405688
Maul ALSO had the high ground against Obi-Wan, but that didn't mean anything there.

Obi-wan must have character specced for low-ground advantage.
>>
>>44405751
It's quite simple. Obi-Wan's ability of having a Certain Point of View allows him to mentally reverse the high and low ground, thus granting him the advantage. He utilizes this in his fight against Anakin. When Anakin attempts spinning in order to gain the high ground, Obi-Wan maintains his High Ground advantage and defeats him.
>>

And Cody acquired Obi-Wan's elegant weapon from a more civilized age.

Lightsabers are a Jedi's life, which means Obi's life was in Cody's hands, which gave him the moral high ground to shoot a good friend when Sheev ordered the fight plan.
>>
>>44405843
But from a certain point of view, shooting first is the morally correct thing to do, thus giving him the high ground.

Or autocorrect being dumb. Still I though that the guy who wrote the novelization of episode 3 did a good job with what he had to work with. Probably helps that standing and talking works much better in a book, and you can imagine semi-compitent actors for Anaken and Padme.
>>
>>44406192
Pity the prose was so purple that it started smoking on the water.
>>
>>44405903
Well, it's not really that he always has the high ground, but rather that he has the ability to look at things from a certain point of view.

Obi-Wan's ability to look at things from a certain point of view allows him to put himself on the high ground, securing him victory over many opponents. Consider that he managed to completely reverse the Maul and Grievous duels from the low ground, by using his ability to make his position the high ground, from a certain point of view.

That said, the power of spinning is extremely potent; the rapid changes in perspective granted by spinning means that establishing the high ground is difficult. Spinning works because you strike when you have the high ground, and failed spin attacks occur because of mistiming causing the strike to be from the low ground.

As a master practitioner of spinning, Anakin/Vader was nearly unstoppable both in space and on the ground, but Obi-Wan's greater understanding of the high ground advantage and his use of a certain point of view gave him an advantage in the Mustafar duel, allowing him to counter Anakin's spinning and strike him down.

Anakin learnt from his mistakes and in ANH, Vader refused to spin against Obi-Wan and fought him on a flat, level surface in a fair duel. Because of this, as well as his advancing age, Obi-Wan could not use a certain point of view to maintain the high ground advantage for long, so instead he goaded Vader into striking him down after he had basically given up and surrendered.

Attacking a defenceless person is something only the lowest of the low would do and in doing so, Vader lost the moral high ground. By accepting his death, Obi-Wan obtained the moral high ground and became more powerful than Vader could possibly imagine, ascending to another plane of existence as a Force ghost, but became unable to interact with the physical plane in ways other than communication.

Finn was one of the better characters, but I think his character progression from coward who doesn't want to fight for the First Order, to Rebel action hero was too sudden.

Mainly I thought it was odd at how quickly and effectively he started killing the people he used to work with for several years. I mean, while he did hate the First Order I find it strange he apparently had no attachment to any of his fellow Stormtroopers. You'd think he'd make more than one buddy among them during his time as a Stromtrooper.
>>
>>44419244

Everything about the movie was sudden.

Why should we care about Starkiller Base? It's 10x the size of the Death Star with 1/10th of the tension.
>>
>>44419272
Well it did blow up a few planets and in the process destroy the largest fleet opposed to the First Order, which in turn removed the possibility for any cool larger scale spaceship fights. So it kind of had that going against it.

>I thought the TIE taking out a Star Destroyer's turbolasers was more unbelievable.
I'm more astounded by security cameras not existing. Half of what the heroes did wouldn't have been possible if the empire-remnant had security cameras in logical places, such as facilities that house their only chance at winning the war.

>mind-controlled guard to let her out
>uh hey look she's escaping, but we can literally see where she is going
>ok now she's surrounded by troopers

>hey let's sneak through the base
>hey look, an asshole in a rebellion jacket is running through the base with a wookie and a known rebel
>they're shooting people, tampering with door controls, and not responding to calls for identification
>ok now they're hounded at every turn by mobs of incompetent troopers

>yay we got the mean boss-lady to turn off the shields, then left
>wtf, why are the shields down? Why isn't there anyone in that room? Let's send someone to the room and turn the shields back on
>ok now the whole plan fails because the shield came back on

Security cameras clearly aren't beyond them. They have extremely-intelligent autonomous droids that rely on sophisticated processing of real-time visual input. If it was a question of manpower, they could have easily made the cameras watch themselves and tell people when something suspicious comes up.

Not to mention trackers or other basic safeguards.

>What I want to know is why Captain Phasma was willing to turn off the shields when she's supposed to be a loyal captain of the First Order, and fully realizes that turning off the shields opens their base up for attack.
It was at that point that I began to think she's not as loyal to the First Order as she lets off. Which might also mean Finn's psych evaluation with her actually turned up some issues she chose not to report. Of course this is all speculation, but it would make her more interesting/relevant.

If JJ was running the show I'd say just look at Empire Strikes Back and scale everything up by 10x (because that makes it betterer than the original), but since he isn't it's kind of in the air.

I want Poe and Finn to finally announce their feelings and become an item, though.

I just figured they looked around for random stuff in the series, found that there is a star killer idea in a vehicle compendium that was basically a smaller vehicle that would have shot bombs that induced a black hole in a star, and decided to redesign it to something that would be more threatening looking and less likely to get a squadron that took it out by just flying at it and laying the fire on. There was also a super star destroyer design in there, so maybe, after this setback, they might settle for a grandiose fleet instead with super vessels as the big guns of their battle fleet. Although I would certainly hope that they are pissed about the loss of a god damn planet super weapon. Or at least pleased that, despite the loss of the station, they can now more fully mold Ren into a more useful tool as he embraced the Dark Side even further. Or perhaps they will use Ren to show a Sith training facility where he was the first one useful for the field.

I believe Poe also mentioned that the TIE they stole was equipped with missiles? Funny that they didn't use those, since missiles are a starfighter's best method of seriously damaging capital ships.

My problem was that not only was it sudden, it had no weight.
They immediately established that Finn, like all stormtroopers, was a literal blank slate. Him not wanting to commit atrocities was basically just a fluke in the system.
If he had committed atrocities, then he could have said "you don't know the things I've DONE" which carries way more emotional weight than "you don't know the things I've SEEN". But he didn't, so his guilt over being a trooper is only by association. It's still pretty heavy shit to be sure, but it's not nearly as heavy as it could be.
>>44412360
The best line in the movie is when Hux and Ren are arguing about Finn. Hux asserts the effectiveness of his troopers.

my m8 was arguing she was a mary sue. TBF, she doesn't fuck up anything except the circuit breakers, iirc, and that turns out to be alright... but she's also completely irrelevant to the plot of the movie.

Like, replace her with Po and his astromech. And everything not only goes the same way, it goes BETTER without her. Sure, they skip the lightsaber and little bartender that could, but they wind up going straight to the rebellion base instead. Sure, she's some powerful force user who'll be important next time or whatever, but she doesn't DO anything this time other than follow the boys around.

Finn finds Poe at the wreck. The walk back to the town like Finn did on his own, they grab Poe's droid. Poe recognizes the Falcon, they swipe that just like they did with Rey. Have some trouble keeping it going but get hijacked by Han the same way Rey/Finn did. There's no drama about the resistance base because Poe is with them. Han delivers them straight there; First Order doesn't get the location of the resistance base or the map.

It's amazing how JJ was able to shamelessly rip from A New Hope and yet come out with a tasteless bowl of gray gruel.

The movie lacked any sort of weight, your emotions at the start of the movie were probably the same as they were at the end of the movie. Why should we give a fuck about Rey? Finn? Poe? All these characters felt more like talking plot conveniences than people, and the only person that showed a hint of depth was the Vader wannabe.

Seriously, I'm calling out the Plinkett Test on this one;

Describe the character without saying what she looks like, what kind of costume they wore, or what their profession or role in the movies was. Describe this character to your friends like they ain't never seen Star Wars.

>But there's no fucking way they'd ever make a bad guy mook female

There was a female Storm Trooper on Starkiller Base, though. I don't remember the exact shot, but Hux was given an update on the prisoner/attack situation and the Storm Trooper had a distinctly feminine voice.

There was also an ambiguously brown woman bridge officer and a couple white officers too.
>>
In the next movie:

Rey will be training with Luke
The First Order will attack the Resistance's main base
Rey will realize she needs to cut training short to help them
First order will crush Resistance base, but important people will escape
The bad guy ruler will consider turning rey to dark side
There will be a dramatic reveal as to rey's origin and her relation to bad guy

He's a badguy who, when it came down to it, couldn't quite stomach being a badguy. For some reason he's totally okay with murdering his former m80s, but that's just how it goes, apparently. He's pragmatic enough to team up with a former enemy if he thinks that will help him bail from Team Badguy.
He's pretty hardy. Most of his skillset is "thug", but he clearly wishes he had some other things he could do. He's inexperienced and kind of novice in terms of living on his own/in the galaxy at large, without his original organization, but he did receive some training in life. (Mostly related to his previous muscle skillset.) He wants to run away and not be found, but his cowardice is relatively easily overcome when he has a good reason to do so.

They were also all addressed by name, which makes them not mooks. They're not expendable because of who they are, but because of who Vader is. Troopers are grunts. Infantry. Expendable is their middle name. Officers are not.
And now that Kylo Ren's the resident dark-side-using lightsaber-toting Imperial leader, we don't actually see him kill any of his own personnel. We just see him grab that one guy by his throat and then we don't see him again. Way to neuter your bad guy by implying he's abusive towards his underlings but not showing it, gg JJ.
Just in time to have female bridge officers too, wouldn't want people to think he's completely irredeemable.
