That would be inconvenient.

Their latest mechanic, the stalling mechanic.

Really does limit the amount of tactics you can pull during dungeon roaming. The longer you stall a fight by healing your team mates, or buffing your allies.

Someone will complain. Complaining causes stress, and if people complain for at least three times, you get ambushed.

The problem here is that you either balance for it being on, or it being off. You can't just say "this mechanic that entirely changes the flow of combat is actually totally optional" without basically having two sets of powers.

Having it on a toggle is amateurish and even worse than just it being always on, even if I think that corpses were a shit solution to an existing problem.

I also have only ever lost one character to heart attack, but I don't like the mechanic simply because it is unnecessary.

When a character goes and becomes afflicted from reaching 100 stress, your combat efficiency goes down by a lot. Sometimes that character ignore your orders or ignores healing, sometimes they even hurt themselves. And no matter how they are afflicted they may waste turns and worse stress out your other companions, which will make them become afflicted eventually too.

Then, rarely, you get a time where the first guy who goes instead of being afflicted becomes heroic instead and saves everything. Now he might just die anyway because he had 200 stress. It's not a good mechanic and cheapens the experience.

Bring your beefiest beat-stick. Crusader, MaA, Leper, Rage-Mode Abomination, Hellion, Bounty-hunter paired with someone who can mark, whatever. Then, make sure the rest of your party is reasonably competent at offence, so they can kill and re-kill the match-man while Blast Hardcheese out in front goes ham on the war machine.
>>
>>44367274

Doesn't this still mean that you are banking on letting stabbity and shooter punch you in the dick turn after turn until you lose, because you can only afford to focus on matchstick and the cannon? The cannon has protection way too high for you to kill it in a reasonable amount of time, and the bandits never stay dead. Killing them is just an objectively worse version of stunning them.

Even if you went into that fight with full health, its not hard to see that ending in some dead adventurers. Which fucks you, because ANYTHING that interrupts your finely oiled grind machine means that your chances of the matchstick man surviving a turn goes up, and it only takes one KABOOM to flush the entire mission down the toilet.

>>
>>44367274
>>44369092
Best combo I have found is Houndmaster, Occultist, Highwayman, Hellion. Hellion and Highwayman are match-murderers. Occultist runs mark and heals, and houndmaster is only used to attack the 'pounder. It helps to have the rare spiked collar +33% damage for the houndmaster, he ends up doing something like 10-15 damage per turn on a marked pounder.

Because the heart attack mechanic is fairly binary.
Even after they recently changed it to just put them on DD.

Every adventurer will get a heart attack at 200 stress.
They will never go catatonic.
They will never flee battle, either to the hamlet or possibly to the last room.
They will never do anything just completely out there in accordance with the kind of shit you might expect their character to do.

No.
They just stress out so much that their heart fucks up even though there's numerous ways high stress might impact your character.

Jesus christ this. I love only ever being able to use a cultist as a healer, even though he doesn't need it all that much by himself - I like the abomination a lot, the guy is damn solid. Sometimes dat RNG though...

>Level 6 party, with my very favorite Abomination

>RNG decides that my Occultist never rolls higher than 2 for healing

Namely I feel the new DD penalty is the straw that's breaking my back here. The stalling change was completely necessary as a means of preventing players from dragging out fights for dozens of turns to exploit easy health and stress healing. It rendered many of the out-of-combat (camp, especially) methods for healing redundant and inferior, and it essentially became an optimal means of playing the game that was also incredibly boring. An optimal method of play that involves clicking on heal buttons for a dozen turns as you ignore a pitiful skeleton slapping your crusader for a few damage is absolutely horrendous and was deservedly dismantled as an exploit. Now it involves some risk in trying to squeeze in a bit more health or stress healing, entirely in line with the decision making the game encourages. The fact that they included it as an option is disappointing solely because it indicates they had so much pressure from casuals that they had to cave in.

>>44366080
\O/

>>44366342
It could barely have been called an exploit simply for how easy it was to discover -- literally the obvious course of action as soon as you learn about healing stress and health in-combat. It trivialised the game to a terrible extent, and takes away from actual decision-making present in the rest of the game's systems dealing with health and stress; it was absolutely a "casual" thing.
>>
>>44362367
This was removed or heavily nerfed a week or so after the inhuman bandage update.
Now you have to actually stall instead of just hitting turn 4
>>
>>44374814
One thing you can do is bring other characters who have smallish heals along with the Abom and Occultist - the Arbalest is great, so is the Houndmaster. My default run is Occultist -> Houndmaster/Arbalest -> Abomination -> Hellion/Bounty Hunter. With that group you've got bleeds or blights depending on need, and the ability to heal multiple times per turn.
The problem with using the abomination is that if you use one, you'll never ever get a group heal of any type - and that's fucking rough when it comes to certain bosses.

Speaking of bosses, that Brigand 12 pounder was a joke of a fight. Kill matchmen, bang on cannon. I think I healed twice the whole fight.
>>
>>44375252
That said, it's shitty and unintuitive that you instantly lose access to healing and stress removal powers because LOL NOT COMBAT. Taking a bunch of poison damage because of a trap when you have someone in the party that can cure posion really hammers home the point.

That's structural though. It's unfixable without going back and rethinking how Stress, Heath and Combat work* and when approaching a release candidate that isn't going to happen. So all you will get is shitty countermeasures to keep people from dragging out fights to spam combat-only heals.

*If I was doing it? I'd cut Stress and Health down a lot and only have them kill if you already have a flaw that puts you at risk of death.

Every time you fill on stress or health track you take a flaw related to the wounds, like a broken wrist, sprained ankle, vicious paranoia, terrified, coughing up blood, ect. Some flaws put you on Death's Door. If your health runs out when you have them you can die.

They can only be healed in camp or town. Health and Stress automatically heal after combat, so you always want to end a fight as quickly as you can.

I'd have had healing (in or out of combat) raise stress and then only resting lower stress.

Also, out of combat healing could proc random encounters/surprises.

I fucking hate the collector. especially when he shows up in apprentice level dungeons
>>
>>44375252
>>44378179
If Darkest Dungeon were to be undergo a large overhaul, I'd just remove healing as a whole. I'd replace healing abilities with damage reduction/negation, and buff starting health.

Come to think of it, I'd remove ability-based resource replenishment as a whole. It just takes away from the whole "gradually worn down by sundry horrors until you're a quivering mass of gristle and trauma".

And you get weird conclusions like sending a bunch of dudes to camp briefly in the dungeon to blow off steam, because that's cheaper and faster at relieving stress than letting them drink at a bar for a week.
>>
>>44362367
Stalling has been a thing in the game for a long ass time though I don't know if its been updated recently but, it was always if you took too long on a regular encounter you would get stressed that you couldn't take some regular ass dudes.
