~You are Sigmund Wagner, sole survivor of the Ulvenacht which left your village a charnel house. You alone were spared death by the hand of Lector Gwynneau Tylmarine, a Paladin and master of the stronghold known as The Castle of Bells. She took you under her protection and brought you to her home to give you an opportunity at a life that you would have otherwise lost to the horrors of the night. ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~
This morning is like many others, but unlike them as well. For today is the day you take the Mark of Measure, a test to gauge your status both as a Paladin and as one of the Faithful. You rise from your bed, dress for the day, clean your face of the small stubble that has started to grow, finally after sixteen years, and tie your two swords to your waist. You descend down the stairs and hear the sound of Gwyn singing her Vigors, stirring your mind and body, as well as everyone else in the castle, with the divine song of morning.
You head into the Great Hall and through it to the kitchen. The cooking staff is up and has already prepared meals for Gwyn, you, and the soldiery. The head chef, a one armed man name Garond, waves his cleaver at you, "Oi! Good morning, Sigmund. Here for your meal? It's hash this morning, potatoes and beef." You thank him after bidding him good morning and take the plate he pushes towards you, eating and half-listening to the hustle of the kitchen.
You know that this afternoon several Paladins will be arriving to test you, if they find you capable, they will report your good work to Gwyn. If they find you exceptional, you could be accelerated on your path to full Paladin status. You wolf down your meal,strech, and stretch, then head to...
You thank Garond for the meal and head upstairs to the library. Passing by Master Durmon with a good morning wave, you delve into your studies. With all possible speed you begin to research the Mark of Measure.
"The Mark of Measure is an optional test, issued to those young Acolytes whose Masters believe can triumph over it. There are three elements to the test; the Test of Faith, the Test of Purity, and the Test of Strength. It is impossible to fully detail what possible actions may need to be taken by the student, and his effort is taken into account when the final measure is made, but the universal truth is to remain dedicated to the values of one's Path and the teaching of one's master."
You take note of it and begin reading some examples of Marks in the past...
"Sir Tormin, Age 17, Path of the Bastion. First Test: Walked through a column of flame, bare as a babe, emerged unharmed. Second Test: Was told to decide the fate of a murderer. Showed mercy and restrained, bound the man to his side to ensure his good behavior and granted him a page. Third Test: Battled against a werewolf alone, Emerged triumphant and unharmed."
Others go on to detail further acts of varying degrees of difficulty. You have faith in your abilities to handle this correctly, but you wish to more than just pass, you want to excel. It could mean your movement to Paladin within a week!
"The Test of Faith is considered to be the second most difficult test of the Mark. A student must be willing to endure pain, shame, hardship, and adversity to achieve his victory. The test may be as simple as catching an arrow between the teeth, or as difficult as climbing a mountain with one's bare hands. This Test can last up to a week, if the Master is particularly cruel."
You blink several times in surprise. A whole week!? The idea of the Mark being any longer than a few hours starts to weaken in your mind as you consider what they could make you do. Reflecting on the tenets of being a Paladin; Justice to all Men, Courage before all Foes, Wisdom in all Things, and Endurance to all pains, you realize that it could be many many different tasks.
"Squire Sigmund," Merea's voice comes from the door as you turn to face her, and she bows, "A hundred apologies, sir, but Lady Gwyn wanted me to make certain that you didn't want to ask her anything before your Mark is done. She cannot help and won't even be at the Mark."
[We can go quickly ask her]
You head down to the Cathedral where Gwyn is waiting for you. Her hands are behind her back and a neutral expression is on her face. "Sigmund, welcome. I thought it best to give you a chance to ask me any questions you might have had before the Mark begins. Please, ask away."
"Master Gwyn, what were your Marks, and how did you pass?" She blinks a few times and answers quickly,
"I didn't. I failed my Marks."
You bite your lip before coughing and mutter out, "I'm sorry, Master, I didn't mean to bring up such a..." She waves her hand, cutting you off, "It's fine. It's a natural question to ask. My first Mark was to climb a pillar of blades without cutting my hand. I passed that one without a problem. My next Mark was to determine if a mother who blasphemed against a Temple of the Seven by stealing its holy relic and selling it should be taken from her child and put in prison. I said yes. I was mistaken." She sighs, "The Marks aren't necessary, they don't make you a Paladin. However, the fact that I failed them has bothered me since I was 16."
You nod and wait a moment, the silence between you somewhat heavy before you ask, "Well, do you think I can succeed?" A corner of her lip curls up as she nods, "Yes, Squire, I think you can succeed. I would not have selected you, or selected the Masters I did for you, if I doubted your abilities. You are a pious man, and a good young man. You are strong and bold. I have no question that you will be an admirable Paladin."
When she finishes talking she steps forward and you can see, for the first time in a while with her so near, how much taller you have become. It was only six years ago that you stood at her stomach, but now, she stands at your shoulder. She reaches up, going up on her toes a bit, and ties a leather cord around your neck. The symbol of the Seven Gods lands softly against your chest as she nods. "It is a blessed necklace. Show faith and it will reward you." Her sharp blue eyes glint in the candlelight as she salutes you and you kneel to her, "Now, go be ready. They should arrive within the hour."
You head back up to the library and do some last minute study before the sound of horns fill the air.
With nervousness in your stomach you head downstairs, muttering a prayer to the Gods for your success. The doors to the Foyer are thrown open and three figures step forward. You kneel and extend an arm, "Welcome to our home, Masters, thank you for coming all this way."
The head of the group is an aged and withered man with a large hook nose and a look on his face of vinegar on his tongue. He clutches a heavy staff and though it would seem that he needs to lean on it for support, instead, he walks tall and strong.
Flanking him on both sides are two young women, one with black hair the other with white. They are dressed identically and seem to be otherwise perfect mirrors of one another, a mace on their hips and a smile on their faces.
The man speaks first, a coarse and harsh voice, "We are grateful for your courtesy, Squire-Acolyte Wagner. I am Count Bartolo the Indictor. Behind me are my granddaughters, Corellia and Lorenica. The three of us will be administering your Marks today. Please come with us to the Muster Field, we have cleared the area."
The four of you head down to the area just outside the barracks but, sadly for you, no soldiers are present or near. In fact, the castle's courtyard feels emptier than it ever has before. An area is set up with Bartolo's banner planted in the ground. He steps away and stands by the fence, as does one of his relatives. The remaining woman bows her head politely and speaks.
"I am Corellia the Testifier, and I will be issuing your Test of Faith. Are you prepared?"
You hold up a hand and kneel, offering prayer to the Gods for their help in this moment of difficulty. You stand, feeling eager, not as scared anymore. "I am prepared!" You say vigorously, maybe a little louder than usual, and she smiles, "I can see that. Alright. Your test is thus." She closes her eyes and chants in the Tongue of the Gods for a few sentences, causing the air to grow heavy and thick as the earth churns under your feet. A large stone circle rises up, brimming with lava. Another shiver of the earth spits out a long bar of pure steel. She grabs the bar and passes it to you.
"Your test will be to forge this into a blade with Faith alone. Plunge the bar, and your hand, into the lava, and show your devotion and Faith! Trust in the Gods!" You nod, stepping up as you feel the heat drying your eyes as you get nearer. You look down into the bright roiling yellow lava and breathe in, once to calm yourself, and once more to get the energy to do it.
You raise your arm and plunge your hand deep into the lava without hesitation. As you feel the warmth building around your arm you imagine a sword, a strong beautiful sword. Your mind leaps around and envisions many things; Gwyn, the Castle, Harmon, your mother, the attack, so many things, before it eventually settles on the image of Gwyn as she came and saved you that night so many years ago.
You wrench your hand up from the lava, the bar of steel now formed into a long and elegant sword, narrow and with a powerful point. It features a leaf-like section towards the tip and its metal around the handle is twisted and beautiful in its grace. You breathe out slowly, glad that the moment has passed.
"Congratulations, Squire Wagner, you have passed my Test." Corellia bows her head and steps back. Her sister steps forward for the Test of Purity and bows to you, speaking in a voice identical to her sister.
"I am Lorenica the Pious. Your Test of Piety begins now. I ask you a simple question, answer correctly and you pass."
She clears her throat and extends her left hand to the side. Light dances around it and forms a figure of a bent woman. "Is it better, Squire, to live in willing denial of the God's wills, forsaking prayer and offering, but living to their code? Or," she extends her other hand, the figure of a fat man yelling appearing, "Is it better to live in unknowing vice?"
The elderly figure of Bartolo steps forward and spits out his words, "I see that you are both Faithful and Pious, young Squire. Now, you must face the Test of Strength. "I will face the foe within." You say boldly and place the sword on the ground. He smiles darkly at your words and steps towards you, "Very well then, let submit to my hand." You nod and he places his palm against your forehead. The feel of his hard leathery hand is the last you remember before you leave your body.
~~~~~~~

You breathe in quickly and sit upright. You are submerged up to your armpits in warm water. The room you are in is full of steam and makes you feel lightheaded. You hear giggling from the other side of the body of water. "Who's there?" You call out and hear movement towards you and the two women slowly swim closer, the water coming up just short of their necks. From the appearance of their shoulders, they appear to be as undressed as you.

"It's only us, brave Squire. You have done excellent work on the tests, and are fair to look upon. Let us show you how good of a job you did," they purr in unison towards you. Both sisters raise their arms and gesture towards you with a single bidding finger.

"Turn aside, temptresses. Such simple ploys will not work on me." You close your eyes and steel your mind. They draw closer, hands begin darting across your shoulders, but instead of submitting you push them both aside and swim forward. "I have no business with you, and I do not wish your acquaintance."

Their voices and giggles fade into silence as you step further through the mist. Distantly, you can see a light, far away, and begin heading towards it. "That wasn't so hard." You mutter and keep walking as you hear a voice echo, "Oh, Siggy, dearest...."

You turn and see the red hair and sharp blue eyes of Gwyn looking up at you from the water. She smiles, and you've never seen her with any sort of cosmetic on, yet she looks more lovely than ever before. A part of you warms you that this is wrong, she's almost your mother. But another part sees Gwyn as a woman, older than you, yes, but still a woman. She draws nearer.

"You've grown up into such a big strong man. Why don't you show me?" She says as she draws nearer.

"What is this, Bartolo?! Some sort of perverse trick!?" You yell up as you feel, almost as if he were telling you, that this is just a place within your own mind, and he is showing you the thoughts in your head, not in his.

"Gwyn..." You start as she draws close. Keeping your distance carefully you start talking, "You know this is not proper. Yes...I would be deceiving you if I were not to admit that you are fair, but you are a mother to me. You raised and protected me. I don't want this. Please, enough." She stops and you can see the lascivious fire drain from her eyes as she draws close and gives you a gentle embrace before vanishing.

You turn and walk boldly for the exit, the white light washing over you as you close your eyes and smile.

~~~~~~~
The heavy hand of Bartolo is removed from your forehead as he nods, "You have done well, child. I recognize you as having passed the Test of Strength without failure. You embraced the most difficult truth of being a man and endured, as a Paladin should."
The old man steps back and taps his staff on the ground, "By my authority as Indictor and Master of your Mark, I grant you the honor of a complete success and will give my recommendation for you to become a Paladin to your Master."
You bow and he nods solemnly, "Please rise, Squire, it has been quite a while since I have seen a novice succeed so greatly. Be proud of your achievements, and keep the knowledge of your triumph over adversity close to your heart." He taps your knee with his staff and gives an ugly wrinkled smile, "Now, I am off to talk to Gwyn, please, entertain my dear granddaughters."
And with that the old man strolls up towards the castle. The two women draw closer and bow, politely, "Congratulations on your success, Squire Wagner."
You clear your throat and give a genuine, but slightly nervous smile, "Thank you, ladies. It was a pleasure seeing your....abilities." You say, trying to stop the thoughts from dancing in your head of that last test. It all felt so real, after all.
With another awkward cough you ask, "So, are the two of you twins?" One of them, Corellia, nods and smiles, "Yes, we are. She and I were born a minute apart. We took the same Path, but different Disciplines. And now we serve with our Grandfather." The two of them nod in unison and ask, "So, you are a Sentinel? What Discipline were you interested in moving towards, perhaps?"
"I am not certain. There are many choices. I must say, however, that you two chose well to stay with your grandfather, he is extremely talented." The girls giggle, "Yes, he is very powerful in his arts. He is one of the few who is of two Disciplines, he is both Oathkeeper and Preacher, making him extremely versatile."
You nod and look up the hill seeing the old man walking down with Gwyn hot on his heels. The two of them approach and the three of you bow upon their arrival. Gwyn gestures for the girls to stand and approaches you. "Sigmund, I am told that you excelled in your Mark and passed with exceptional distinction. Congratulations are in order."
"Thank you, Master Gwyn," you say and keep your head down. She continues, "I have also received the recommendation from Master Bartolo that you should be moved to recognition of your status with all haste. Is that what you want, Sigmund?"
"Yes, Master Gwyn, I am ready." She nods and before she can speak you offer her the sword, "However, before we go further, I would like to offer you this gift of my Mark, as a small token of my thanks for your years of dedication and kindness. Thank you very much, Gwyn." She takes the sword and nods her head, not speaking as she swallows and bows her head to you deeply. "Master Bartolo, please, instruct him on the test, I must return this to my armory." Her voice is wavering slightly as she heads away.
Bartolo steps in and begins talking, "Now, Squire Wagner, the way to becoming a Paladin is markedly easier than your Mark. All that you must do is don the Ur-Armor of your Path, which can be created by any Paladin for the purposes of this ceremony. Then, once wearing the armor of your forebears, you must kneel in prayer for an entire night and abstain from sleep. When the dawn touches the hem of your cloak, you may rise and remove the armor, but no longer as a Squire, but as a Paladin."
You nod and he continues, "You may, of course, bring an attendant with you, one who is forbidden to speak, but may give you water every hour and ensure that you remain awake. Who would you like to bring with you?"
"I would like Master Gwyn to come with me. I trust her most." He nods and smiles, "The bond between the two of you is very strong, I can see. I am sorry for what you endured in your mind, but you are the better man for doing so." His granddaughters leave and he takes you back up to the Castle where Gwyn is waiting, sitting in the Chapel at prayer. "Rise, Lady Gwyn," Bartolo intones gravely, the young woman jumping to her feet, "You must serve the duty of Vigilant at the behest of this Squire, do you accept?"
The words hadn't left his mouth for a moment before she barked out, "Yes! I would serve gladly." He gives a chuckle and gestures for her to lead the way. She takes the three of you to the enclave where you first saw her statuettes of the gods and she has you kneel in front of the altar. As you do so she gestures and chants a few words and you feel the weight of impressive armor settle over you. Your eyes are fixed upon the inscription on the wall. "I will see you again in the morning, Squire Wagner. Do with Faith in all things." And with that, Bartolo steps out of the room.
The armor features a pair of sweeping shoulders that lead up to your sallet style helm which you wear with great comfort. The minutes tick by into hours and as you grow weary you see visions and hear sounds. The first wearer of this armor fought many great foes and dedicated his life to the good fight against the Horrors of the world. He was not like the Vanguard, who leaped after dragons and smote them from the skies, nor was he like the Bastion, unshakable and implacable. He certainly wasn't the Minister, whose voice rang with the authority of the Gods.
No, the Sentinel was the poorest and most humble of the Ur-Paladins. He would defend the Innocent and wicked alike from injustices. He was devout, but not a zealot. He was stern, but not unwelcoming.
His undoing was met when his good nature was betrayed.
A woman, to whom he had sworn his honor, was purchased by the carnal power of vile devils and tempters. She was weak, and when he slept, she stole his armor and blade, leaving him bare before the hordes of vile horrors that sought his end.
Yet, still, unarmored and weaponless, he stood and delivered. Using his righteous fury and the power of his soul, he battled against the seemingly endless tides of demons, vampires, and fae who wished him dead. A blade, borne of his purity of heart, and which answered to his Zielrand styles that he had developed, danced a vicious dance of death, ending many hundred of the monsters.
He did not even allow them the pleasure of his corpse, for the use of this blade for the days he fought against them drained him until, finally, he was no longer able to expose his soul so boldly, and he vanished into the air leaving only a pile of the dead in his wake, and the knowledge of his swordcraft.
A feeling of warmth fills you as you turn your head and see the light of the sun shining through a window and touching the base of your cape. Gwyn, who had been faithfully standing by you, smiles and breaks her vigil. "I am pleased to be the one you chose, Sigmund. Thank you for allowing me the honor of being the first to congratulate you, Sir Sigmund."
You stand and the armor vanishes from you in the same manner the Ur-Sentinel did. She extends her hand and you grip it firmly with your own. The two of you shake and she nods her head, wearily, "I am certain Bartolo will wish to speak, but I must sing my Vigors." She pardons herself and exits to go sing.
You step forth and Bartolo raises his staff, "Praise be to the Gods! Hail to you, Sir Sigmund!" You raise your hand and smile, triumphantly.
An hour passes as the area is prepared for your ordainment and you are offered pure water, blessed by Bartolo's hand itself, to bathe yourself and ready yourself. You stand after wiping yourself dry and breathe in and out slowly, excitement thundering through your heart. It finally happened, you tell yourself, you finally have become a Paladin. A Sentinel.
The call goes out for you to step forth from the enclave into the Chapel. The visitors of the day are seated and glance at you with anticipation. Some of the faces have seen you grow from a child into the man you are today. The voice of Gwyn fills the air, the Vigors that you have woken to every day for the past eight years reaches you and Bartolo ushers you forth.
You stand at the head of the Chapel and kneel. The twins bring a silver gauntlet and a chalice on a cushion before you. Their grandfather raises his staff and speaks sonorously.
"Today we stand in deep appreciation for the blessings of the Gods. They have given us another blade against the dark, and another shield against the ravages of the wicked. Today, dear Innocents and Blessed alike, we stand at the anointment of a Paladin." He presses the head of his staff against your head and asks deeply.
"Sigmund Wagner, are you prepared to deliver Justice to all Men, to show Courage before all Foes, to bear Wisdom in all Things, and to carry Endurance to all Pains, under the pain of death and dishonor, so may the Gods bind you?"
You nod your head solemnly, "Yes, I do so swear it." He nods and takes the gauntlet, "Then with this, the hand of the Eldest God, do I offer you a drink of the Sacred Chalice, which will grant you the first step on your road beyond the Innocent."
You take up the Chalice and slowly drink from it. The water is cool, but once inside of you, fills you with fire and a desire for justice.
>>44334570
I am tending towards:
>Paragon Amongst Men [15 XP]: The draught from the Sacred Chalice has given you more than a slight advantage over the Innocent. You are capable of performing superhuman feats of strength, speed, and endurance. You are strong enough to heft an Ox over your head, as fast a horse, and your skin can turn away arrows. You gain an additional die to Brawn and Nimbleness tests and two additional Major Wounds to your maximum.
Yeah gotta agree. Flames one seems nice if you want a berserker with some intimidation bonus/specific foe bonus. And the Wolfsbane would be cool despite the focus being without the character, Dogs are awesome.
>>
>>44334584
>>44334610
I am picking it more because of its Terror effects and its anti terror effects realy.
>>
>>44334500
>>Fear No Flames [15 XP]
>>
>>44334610
If you want pure combat potential, then Wolfsbane is better than Paragon because you can attack from multiple vectors and have more tactical flexibility.
>>
>>44334570
>>44334610
Also I would like to say that we should keep these thematic, part of the reason I didn't go for Wolfsbane is that we don't have any Hounds. We should get a couple of hounds first (maybe after we pick up Tongue of Beasts) and then pick up Wolfsbane as we get more comfortable with them
>>
>>44334935
>>44334975
Instead, then, how about we give up the extra die in Guile in order to get the Stance.
>>
>>44334975
Myabe we should recap all our votes, Considering everything above is a jumbled mess.
>>
Just mentioning but read Rush of Battle and Absolute Focus, that shit combos like crazy with our Prayer and I Need No Shield.
We can double our bonuses meaning bigger chance of fucking shit up, inflict two minors, up one to major, and deal an additional minor.
So we can deal up to 5/3 Major Wounds in a turn, or 5 Major in 3 turns.
>>
>>44335024
This brings up an interesting thought.. Maybe we SHOULD wait for picking up feats and instead pick a bunch of focuses to start with.
>>
>>44335024
Or, if we can inflict a full major wound per turn, add in the bonus from absolute, up it with the Prayer and we do 2 major per turn. Adding up to 6 in 3.
>>
>>44335052
I dunno, can we delay it?
>>
>>44335107
>>
>>44335052
I would support that, we haven't really show exactly what kind of paladin we are (aside from the righteous kind). It'll give us time the flesh out the character more and be more humble since we don't have major super powers.
If we have the points left for it though Chaplain is both less expensive and provides more blocking which is important considering we don't use a shield
>>
>>44335157
>>44335052
[We can just do the stat gains and shelf the XP until the next Major Cycle ends if you want to wait for the Feat. or you can get a Feat and wait until the next Minor Cycle ends to get your Focuses.]
You rise to roaring applause as the Vigors end. Your eyes drift up to see Gwyn standing and looking down on you with a smile. She nods and you nod back. A great feast is held and you enjoy drink and song and excellent food.
Finally, late at night after everyone has gone and the party is past, you are pulled into the enclave with Gwyn. She appears nervous, shuffling her feet and unsure of where to put her eyes. It is strange for you to see her this way. You begin to speak as she cuts you off.
"So, you are fully realized. A Sentinel, a Paladin, and a grown man. I'm very proud to see you come this far so early, Sigmund." She says with a small smile. You return it, "Well, I wouldn't have made it this far without such an excellent teacher." Gwyn laughs gently and looks out the window.
"You're an errant now, and as a Paladin there are strict rules about where you can live and with whom. So, I cannot keep you here, sadly. You must go on your own way and find your own Stronghold, or just live as an Errant. I'm sorry." She says and lowers her head.
Pretty sure she has red hair and blue eyes.
Also this is the pic QM posted last thread, of Gwyn.
[We're 16, so Gwyn is 27 right now. She was 19 when she rescued us. She is 5'5" roughly, about 110 lbs, long red hair, sharp blue eyes, thin and athletic build.]
You reach out and grab her, pulling her into your chest. She lets out a noise of surprise before sighing, "Oh Sigmund...." She says with a laugh and returns it. The two of you embrace for a while before eventually, and somewhat awkwardly, she shuffles out of it and smiles, a bit less stern and calm than usual as she gives a weary smile, "Alright, help yourself to anything in the armory, and a horse from the stable. Merea will prepare a bag for you and I'll have Durmon find a map of the area."
The two of you walk into the armory and you pick a fine suit of plates, some chain and padded cloth to go underneath it, and a large kite shield. "I know you've gotten fond of using two swords, but a shield is still helpful against arrows and other such foul works out in the world." You nod and don the armor, sling the shield to your back, tighten your swordbelt and gather the supplies she gave you.
Everyone present, servants and soldiers and Gwyn, gather on the steps of the castle to bid you farewell. You have chosen a brown horse with a white star on its nose as your steed and bid everyone farewell. With a heavy heart, and a strange feeling of excitement, you head out of the keep's gate and consult the map by light of the stars.
>A) Head North to the Winterlands, home of the Werewolves and the hearty Bovenlanders, such as yourself.
>B) Head South to the Rashidi Sea, and find passage to Carazas, City of Necromancers.
>C) Head West to Font Florenne, Land of Paladins, to seek elders in your craft.
>D) Head East to Voldesaad and beyond into Kiberstrode, Domain of the Blood Kings.
The huntsman is coming, wolf.
Still feel like we are going in to danger a bit to early. Lets go and see if we can pick up anything from the other of our craft.
>>
>>44335837
It just feels like the North is end boss level Terretory right now considering our backstory.
>>
>>44335772
More pics of redheads then.
Master, do we know any lore on other factions aside from Paladins and Cavaliers?
Specifically, anyone superhuman that might be a threat/ally?
i agree with this anon we need to skill up a bit maybe meet other new paladins.
>>
>>44335882
Taking our feat in to consideration, I think its best to either go with A or C. We dont realy have the Chaplain and Fire feats bonuses to do D or B
>>
>>44335856
[Pretty much, anything non-Human is an enemy. There are several big bads, but in terms of immediate threats, you know of the war in the South. Several dozen Paladins have united in a Crusade against the Necromancers. They're tearing stuff up right now.]
>>
>>44335925
I meant like sorcerors or non-cavaliere heretics, or even just common folk with military might or some such. Assassins, etc.
I guess necromancers fits the bill.
>>
>>44335953
Finishing early training and going out to a war is how young lads like our hero tend to meet their end. We reaaaaaaaly need more time to prepare, maybe even get some companions.
>>
>>44336015
I don't know what you're talking about, I am asking a lore question.
Screw caution time to prove our worth and gain real experience
>>
Oh, thought you wanted to go to B. Gues I just missread it. My point still stands though.
[We've got a tie between A and C. I'm going to step in and recommend C.]
You turn your horse to the West, deciding it would be best to take this chance to make a name for yourself and see the world outside of the villages and the wilds. Apparently, the Great Holds to the West are home to many of your fellow Paladins visiting for pilgrimage.
~Many days ride later~
After days of crossing rolling plains and smooth roads you arrive at the walls of a large keep squatting on the road. By the time you have drawn near a group of guards ride out, heavily armored and armed. Their leader stabs his lance into the grass and rides towards you in a gesture of willingness to speak.
"Hail, traveler! Know that you are entering the lands of Sir Olondre, Keeper of the Border. What business do you have heading to Font Florenne?"
The man relaxes and removes his helmet, "Ah, forgive me, your Honor, I had no intentions of appearing rude to a noble Paladin. Yes, news comes to us by the day, and each time it leaves with ten more of my men. Several of your brothers and sisters are leading a valiant effort, but those damn skullmongers are hard to track down, and the stuff they do with the dead makes me right sick, your Honor." He says with a shake of his head. The man is older, gray has started to touch his temples and his beard as well. He bows his head, "Come, sir, let us welcome you properly."
You and the guards are let into the Keep, your horse stabled, and your pack refreshed. A runner is sent from the stables and returns quickly, "Begging your pardon, your Honor, but our Lord wishes to speak to you." You consent, of course, and head inside, helm under your arm.
"Hail, noble Paladin! I am Sir Olondre." The loud, nay thunderous, voice of the man in the great hall fills the room as he stands and walks towards you. This man was once, perhaps a great warrior, but now has gotten older and much heavier. He bows sweepingly to you and you nod, allowing him to rise.
"It's a pleasure to meet the Master of the Daggerwood Excursion, your men have done great things, Lord Knight." The man laughs and grabs you around the shoulders, "A fellow soldier, and a Paladin to boot! Oh, I will like having you around. Tell me, your Honor, have you ever done a healing? One of my best men; good man, family man, was wounded by a fae arrow, and I cannot find the means to help him with modern medicine. Perhaps a work of your Faith can restore the wound?"
You agree to take a look at it and he brings you to the infirmary. A severe looking man is resting on the bed, his face a sickly pallor, and a nasty weeping wound in his side, clearly in the shape of an arrowhead. You remove your gauntlets and close your eyes, praying to the Gods to work their magic through you.
Your hands grow warm and golden light begins to pour from them as the wound shifts from green and disgusting to flesh color and then closes itself. The man's skin begins to return to a pale, but human, color and he seems far more relaxed in his rest.
Olondre laughs and claps your back with a ham-like fist, "What a show! This man should recover in a week at most, but you have very well spared him from death. Ah...what a blessing to see you at such a time." The two of you return to the great hall and he sits you in a chair opposite his throne.
"I must be honest with you, lad, despite our success in Daggerwood, the fae continue to advance, and the forest draws nearer and nearer. Normally, if it weren't so near, we would just put the torch to it and drive out those damnable fae, but we have found their efforts more organized and more aggressive than usual for these things. You must understand, I've dealt with the fae for fifteen years at this point, but about six years ago they suddenly became more and more daring."
He clamps a pipe between his teeth and starts to smoke it, grumbling into his beard as he mutters out, "Damn forest used to be almost two miles away, now it's less than a half mile away and it gets closer by the day. I lose more villagers to that forest than anything else put together. I need something to help turn the tide."
