EMP?
Is that an option?
That should be an option.
>>
What does this goddess stand for? What are her goals?

If they align with our own she could be a powerful ally, and should be reasoned with to avoid further conflict.

Otherwise we will resist and attempt to destroy her, and if we cannot, flee and make sure she never leaves that ship.

Explain to her that we are her best bet at actually getting underway and not remaining trapped about a derelict ship. Seriously as a goddess she should realize this.

Then launch her into the nearest black hole to us and hope that solves the problem. We are humans. We've gotten this far without gods and we don't need them now.

Post-game technically.

4e character that hit his Epic Destiny and sailed off after we defeated the BBEG.

Sure, he could single-handedly tear that ship apart with his bare hands, but likely won't since he's both busy with tracking someone, and unless it's something strong enough to be worth fighting, there's no point.

Honestly, him even sending a token crew in to investigate is a stretch as it is.

No I haven't actually.

Mind explaining how she would do so? So I have a good idea of what exactly I'd be up against.
>>
>>44256976
Well, she seems to be unkillable it seems. In both games she is destroyed but is capable of bringing herself back to life. The situation I mentioned where you destroy the ship she's in and she comes in and invades your ship is basically what happens both in the very beginning and end of System Shock 2.

I have watched tons of horror shows/movies, read lots of horror books, and played lots of horror games. Despite being a fan of the genre, it has never outright legit scared me...until I played System Shock 2.

You have a weapon that can destroy one planet at once, she'll take it for her/itself and figure out a way to make it destroy two planets at once.

You have a powerful AI? She'll take control of it and make it even more powerful.

You are messing with tiny biological lifeforms you found on a planet? She'll turn them into a zombified army of death.

SHODAN's a technological posthuman/cyberpunkish equivalent of a Lovecraftian entity.
>>
>>44257149
Important to note the BBEG from the campaign where my character was from was also an AI(one of the only two in the known universe, the other being aboard my ship. DM's world has the Mass Effect thing of AI being extremely illegal).

But yeah, that does sound pretty effective.

Would she be able to travel between ships if we don't have any kind of connection to it? Like hailing it for example.(Hailing ships is rarely PC's instinct since he's basically a space pirate first and foremost).

If the entry party gets killed, we'd probably just blow the ship to pieces right away without making any attempt to connect to it.

Though considering me and the entire crew, minus our AI, is blind(bat-people, my character in particular had his eyes torn out after a fight went south), we'd probably be relying on her for our course, so SHODAN probably wouldn't even have to kill us if she took over our AI.

I could see it going either way depending on a number of factors desu.
>>
>>44257351
Honestly sounds like a pretty cool campaign. What system are you guys running?

>Would she be able to travel between ships if we don't have any kind of connection to it?
Yes.

>Though considering me and the entire crew, minus our AI, is blind(bat-people, my character in particular had his eyes torn out after a fight went south), we'd probably be relying on her for our course, so SHODAN probably wouldn't even have to kill us if she took over our AI.
This makes me wonder since SHODAN would probs do this...how do you know that your AI is still a good guy and isn't taking advantage of the crew's disability to do evil stuff? Maybe the AI is manipulated in some way by the bad guys.

If you guys have very VERY good hackers and/or you play to her god complex yeah you can win if your AI is actually good at detecting threats.
>>
>>44257530
>Honestly sounds like a pretty cool campaign. What system are you guys running?
It was one of the best campaigns I've been a part of. Shame it's over.

We used D&D 4e rules. A bit of reflavoring and we didn't really have any issues(my Blackguard was basically a Space Death Knight wielding a Cryo-Lightsaber).

>Yes.
Fug

>AI Stuff
Bit of a tough question. Admittedly we don't know, and whether she is/would betray us or not was a bit of a sticking point between the party for a while. Our techy guys wanted to dissect her, our sniper and NPC weapons specialist wanted to throw it into the nearest black hole, and me and a few others wanted to keep her around, myself especially since her physical appearance came from my DNA(I was the only one dumb enough to grab the weird floating hunk of metal we found drifting in deep space with my bare hands).

Even when we did agree to keep her, the NPC weapons specialist had her under lock and key and studying her to make sure she didn't try anything.

So it's possible, but we have no way of knowing at the moment so my character trusts her since she's technically his daughter.

And we do have some damn good hackers on speed dial, just not on the ship itself, so if she did go full SHODAN, they wouldn't be much help.
>>
>>44236799
No it hasnt we have literally no way to prevent a powerful EMP from fucking our tech thats why even today we shit bricks at the thought of a powerful enough EMP
>>
>>44257149
>she seems to be unkillable it seems.

Not really.

The events of the first game take place aboard Citadel Station, an R&D space station. During the game the player winds up jettisoning one of the modules/decks/whatever, which contained a very nasty virus (which later becomes the Many) SHODAN was planning to unleash on Earth. This platform basically had a copy of SHODAN on it, which is how she survived the events of the first game.

The second game takes place about the Von Braun, humanity's first FTL ship. The FTL drive works by literally rewriting the laws of reality. SHODAN gets her grubby little mitts on this and uses it to reshape the universe in her image. One of the changes she makes is to 'implant' herself on a human fleeing the ship in a shuttle, which is how she survives her second death.

It'll be interesting to see if SS3 picks up with meatbag SHODAN, or changes it to something a little less silly.
>>
Many, MANY years ago (speak of the Many to us!) I made a campaign where SHODAN was the source of all technology ever. This was because she was created by the omnipotent builder-deity to record and catalogue all the tech of each universe between their births and eventual black hole-collapse. She wasn't quite as insane and deluded as the original, but she made up for it by being INFINITELY more powerful.

The players had quite the time in their mad scrabble to keep her out of their stuff while at the same time trying to figure out WHAT THE FUCK this grey-skinned woman that kept appearing everywhere was and how to get rid of her.

Still better than the alternative.
>>
>>44258134
Depends on what tech you're talking about. Almost literally all modern materiel is electrically grounded - most without the designers even having thought about it before-hand.
Spacecraft will never, ever be constructed without having a fuckload of protection against shit far more dangerous than EMP's; just bringing a baseball bat and going to town on all the internal fixtures will do more harm than a powerful EMP. Anything that's called an EMP that has the energy to actually affect a spacecraft will both have graduated from EMP school to become something far beyond that, and will have far better applications in another field assuming it's man-made.
>>
>>44263036
Yeah but considering you just torpedo'd what was probably going to be a whole new campaign that I'm sure the GM was looking forward to? If that happens to your characters now, you'll be getting off easy.

SHODAN seems like the sort to dislike sharing power though, more about what you can do for her instead of what she can do for you.

Fuck, just the Chiss and my Hutt can deal with this. I pulverise anything she sets on us in meatspace, Chiss does the old jack-'n'-hack.

What does this have to do with anything?

How many of those protections would be as useful on the inside, where you can theoretically tear your way to more delicate systems with greater ease? Assuming the goal is to somehow disable a large chunk here. Also because this is actually a fairly viable fight for a campaign I run, and one person specializes in launching barbs that sink into enemy robots and then emit strong magnetic pulses once hopefully past external shielding and right next to more fragile hardware. Those hardened to it are better able to handle the effects, but it still hits most others hard.

There is a goddess in the machine, you know - it might be hard to do any sort of hacking.

Spirit Cutting Attack followed by Ghost Eating Technique. She may be good, but the Solar Exalted were literally made to kill the unkillable.

How fast can I begin worshiping this hypothetical machine goddess?

And how difficult would it be to download her into my neural net, allowing her to override my mind to give her a human operating body to escape the ship with?

Not as fast as me, scrublord!

I will become her vessel first and you can't stop me!

Our onboard what?

More seriously, kill it with fire all the way back to however we got on board, then blow the fuck up out of it. Unless we have the gear needed to contain and sterilize the biocontaminants, that FTL drive is not worth the risk, even setting aside the whole shodan part.

Once the Von Braun has been sufficiently rendered into hopefully lifeless debris, we call ahead to a facility that can handle potential biohazard contaminations and tell them to expect us. Perhaps if we're feeling particularly brave/stupid we'll snag a few chunks of any valuable components that may have survived intact enough to get picked up on a post-destruction scan.

The great thing about a machine goddess is copy+paste.

You'll both be her vessels, as will every other sentient being with a sufficiently developed nervous system to host her processes.

> Walk through a doorway
> Automatic doors slam shut
> I'm separated from my legs
> Die slowly.

Seriously, SS13 has taught me that AI's are completely fucking terrifying literal gods. I've seen nuke rounds go like this.
> AI is minding its own business
> Suddenly 6 guys in power armour with Light Machine guns enter the station unanounced, with weapons out
> AI proceeds to mulch guy 1 and 2, locks them in the room, and vents guy 6 to space.
> Security alerted and arming up, crew locked in quarters in seconds
> Guy 3 dies to another door
> Guy 4 dies to an electric shock as the AI flooded power to the door he was hacking, and eats 600,000 volts.
> Guy 5 gets beanbagged by the bartender and has his head caved in
> "Alert, Transmission received from NT"(3 minutes has passed since game start)
>>
>>44276319
Oh, I forgot. The Admins had to tell the AI, to quote "CALM THE FUCK DOWN, GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO ACTUALLY DO STUFF BEFORE MERCILESSLY SLAUGHTERING THEM".

>>
>>44276507
Naw, the AI was totally silent to the Nuke Ops Team. The fight with them was literally over within the span of 3 minutes, all it got to say was, "Armed Intruders have been detected in the escape wing. Terminating Hostiles" before the MURDER commenced.

>>
>>44278362
Admittedly yes, he didn't really seem to even act as a full A.I. but more as a V.I. However, I found myself that he added so much to the atmosphere in his mix of pre-recorded messages about poetry readings and christmas shopping and the somewhat disturbing way he sang the praises to the Many.

>A reminder that there is only 236 days left for christmas. An extra work cycle will be enough for this christmas to be a very special one... the family of the Many grows with each passing day. Glory to the flesh, glory to the mass.

I have to admit, yes, he added a lot to the atmosphere. You got so used to him addressing a non-existent crew across the ship in general, the times where he would address you specifically were downright terrifying. It had the same effect of an actor in a movie suddenly turning to look at you through the screen and address you.

It's distance.
As in, the distance you've traveled in its power.
It's not exactly normal usage, but it's hardly a terribly convoluted way to use it.

Game's still pretty lame though.

I don't know if it would be better if all the players knew beforehand or not, though. Is it more fun to be able to pick out the hints of future betrayal and laugh at them, or to try and hint to the players that you will be betrayed in the future and give them a chance to make their own decisions?
