That's why Casino dice are made the way they are. They are machined to precise dimensions, their dots are painted on, and they are transparent so you can see if there are any weights inside. They are also serialized so that Casinos can track how heavily all of their dice are being used and will retire the over-used dice.

Casino dice are much more expensive. A set of them tends to cost about $5-$10 for 4 of them. You can save money by buying the retired dice.

Be aware though, if your one of THOSE GUYS that has a set of lucky dice, Casino dice will give you worse results. Your lucky dice are lucky because they are mis-shaped just enough to give you the results you like more often. Not a lot often, but often enough for you to have noticed. Casino dice will likely give you something much closer to what statistics predicts. You'd have a 1/6th chance of any particular side landing face up. If you're ever bored enough, take your "lucky dice" and roll them thousands of times while recording the results. You'll find that your lucky dice really are weighted towards certain results.

It's actually a double /tg/ joke, since 187 is a bit of old Magic slang for enter the battlefield effects on creatures that kill other creatures.

Pic related was the first.
>>
>>44234680
I can't say I've ever heard that piece of slang. I can't fathom why they would 187'd in the translation instead of killed. It's frankly nonsensical, given not all of the audience will understand what 187'd means.

The site I use doesn't have them, either.

Considering the /tg/ credits are hosted, I doubt they would have left them out. Maybe they were never translated? Or maybe those pages aren't relevant to the manga somehow? (ads? one-shots of something not related?)

Yeah, and the 4th edition (the first one out) was actually damn good.

The new edition... ugh. Okay, the PHB came out, and it was a thing of beauty. But it was missing some things to play, as one of these games where there's a dedicated DMG.

The Monster Manual then came out, and it still to this day is one of the finest quality game books you will ever come across. High production values, superb quality, incredible information, an absolute joy to read.

and then... then a few years went by, the team changed, and the direction and planned modifications went to the scrapper and what ended up coming out was... different. And not all that great.

I *THINK* the DMG is out now. But it might be still the beta doc.

I notice that a lot of these japanese trpgs are set up to have very short campaigns. It seems like a single campaign never goes more than a couple of sessions.

Does anyone have experience with playing games like this? None of the games I've ever been in were intended to only go a couple of sessions.

Read Tenra Bansho Zero. Gameplay is highly formalised (divided into scenes and intermissions, each with phases etc.) and skipping ahead is common, so things progress quickly. E.g. you might have something like
>Player: "His fortress is only a few miles from here! Let's infiltrate the fortress so we can fight him!"
>GM: "Everyone okay with that? Right, you're now in the deepest part of the fortress. He gasps in shock as you appear. 'How did you get past the guards?'".
>Player: "I toss a severed head to the ground from one of the guards I killed when I came in. 'You call these guards? Ha! I've seen better fighters in knitting clubs.' I roll to Intimidate."

>They were some things we loved, (Aiki Chits), but some things that worried us, (Karma and Information)

Not entirely sure what you mean by "Information," but you can't really enjoy Aiki chits without embracing Karma. Otherwise what you really like is "FATE points."

What differentiates TBZ's Karma system from run of the mill bennies/fate points/whatever is that the entire system is constructed in a way where characters are forced to change and evolve, because that's what keeps them in the game. This is the thing that makes the Karma system great; it's a minmax resistant story engine.

To briefly introduce the system for people who aren't familiar with TBZ, it goes like this:

All players have Fates, which are simple evocative characteristics that characters roleplay around. Love: Childhood Sweetheart is a Fate. Goal: Kill the BBEG is a Fate. In addition, the GM is allowed to give each character a Fate, called a Destiny, which mechanically works the same way. Whenever you roleplay these characteristics, you get an Aiki chit.

Aiki chits basically turn into Kiai points, which can be spent to gain advantages in different ways. You can actually outright *buy* successes; by spending enough Kiai, you can outright succeed at anything you set your mind to, regardless of what you roll. However, spending Kiai generates Karma.

Karma can be thought of as "corruption," and gaining too much of it will write your character out of the game, turning him into an Asura, an evil human who has gone mad due to his great attachment to the world. Lots of Buddhist overtones here. Anyway, in order to reduce your Karma, you need to either *rewrite* your Fates, or *sublimate* them, which you get the opportunity to do at the intervals between acts in the game.
>>
>>44225231

Amazing
>>
>>44260697

Rewriting your Fate means taking one of your Fates and changing something about it so it's a little different. For example, if we had our Love: Childhood Sweetheart Fate and we wanted to rewrite it, we'd keep the target of the Fate (Your Childhood Sweetheart) and change something about it. Maybe instead of just being secretly in love with her, you've resolved to propose her for marriage when you get back from your latest adventure, so you might rewrite it to be Goal: Propose to Childhood Sweetheart.

Sublimating means you scratch that Fate off; it's resolved completely and your character has moved on. Goal: Kill the BBEG would be a fine target for sublimation immediately after you kill the BBEG, obviously, but you can do it for any Fate you want. Perhaps you decide your character lost his memory of his Childhood Sweetheart when he was knocked on the head during a great battle; Sublimate it! How heartbreaking will it be when she sees him once he returns and he can't even remember her name?

In addition to these choices, new Fates may be created during the intermission phases of the game. Every intermission, your character should be changing in some way, gaining new Fates, and generally just shaking up the character. In fact, the GM and even other players can offer you Aiki chits in exchange for taking on Fates of their choosing, encouraging other players to get involved in how your own develops.

So what you get here is a constant cyclical system that provides rewards for roleplaying, allowing you to use those rewards to succeed, but more importantly demands depth and change from your character in order to justify it.

The *really* beautiful thing here is that even taken at its most cynical, minmaxy level, this system creates a story. The rulebook uses an example that went something like this.
>>
>>44260710

Once in a game, a samurai player was squaring off against the BBEG. The samurai was nowhere near as strong as the BBEG, and had to draw deep into his Kiai reserves to beat him, putting him way over the Karma limit, which, if he did not reduce below the limit, would Asuraize his character at the end of the next intermission. However, the player had done his mental math, and realized that by sublimating all his Fates, he could keep his character in the game. So he did just that.

The GM asked him, "Well, your character's Fates have all been sublimated; so what does that mean?" and the player decided that in the great battle, his character had fallen unconscious after slaying the BBEG, and after waking up, he had lost all his memories. This carried over to a subsequent game; the samurai had started to work for a wicked witch, and the other players, who recognized him, had to find a way to dispatch the witch without hurting the samurai. After the battle and in the intermission period, the samurai took the Fate Forgotten Memories so he could start to roleplay around the fact that he was trying to remember his lost past. Even taken at its most minmaxy face value approach ("I want to beat the BBEG, but I don't want to lose my character!") the Karma system helped create a cool story that everyone could get invested in. That's what's awesome about the Karma system.

tldr TBZ is awesome and you should play it

>>44260710
>>44260717
Dang, that really does sound awesome.
>>
>>44260962

I am a huge fanboy of TBZ. It lacks mechanical depth compared to some other systems I really like, but it succeeds with flying colors at what it really sets out to do, which is to make this oddly theatrical type of beer and pretzels type game where it gives you all the tools you need to get a dramatic and interesting game going *fast*. Players are constantly asked to evaluate how their characters are developing, if only for the practical purpose of keeping them alive and in the game. It's a perfect example of how to marry roleplay and "rollplay," loathe that term though I may

Another thing I really like is all the little ways it tries to speed things along, yet does so in a productive manner. It is a system designed for one-shots, so it does a lot to try to help make sure you get character drama out of the precious little time you have. For instance, the Emotion Matrix.

You know that slightly awkward bit of the first session in every game where all the characters are trying to feel eachother out and find some material to roleplay with, or some basis to start roleplaying from?

Enter the Emotion Matrix. It's a table that you roll 1d66 on, using a d6 for a 10s digit and the other as a 1s digit. You roll the dice, look at the table, and the table tells you that initial gut feeling another character gives you. This can be anything from "I felt a hint of killing intent from him" to "he reminds me of family." You can also play around it a little using Kiai to move the result to an option you'd prefer, or the GM can try to bribe you into accepting a result that he wants.

And I find that really handy, because then you can develop based on that initial "gut feeling," and you're never left flailing around looking for some material to use to relate to another PC. It gives you a basis for characterization *quick*. Keeping things snappy and interesting is really what TBZ is best at.
>>
>>44261340
Doesn't this 1d66 only give results from 11 to 66?
>>
>>44261396

Details
>>
>>44261396
More actually wouldn't it just give (1-6)(1-6), so you could never roll a 29 or something like that. Unless you're rolling a d10 and a d6, in which case it'll average out to around 41 I think. Might as well just use a custom die roller app or online site.
>>
>>44261486
Assuming I'm doing it right in my head, it gives you 36 different possible combinations. Why do they need exactly 36 entries?

>>44261521
