I haven't had a chance to sit and play a full game, but I got given a demo of it and I've watched a playthrough video.

It seems pretty sweet. Nail bitingly dangerous monsters to fight, material gathering and crafting kinda like Monster Hunter, and a Settlement management to help advance your tech, skills and survivors because people are going to get maimed, killed or go nuts.

Some of the random Hunt Events, I like the random elements and choices you can make.

Do you use Survival points to avoid minor wounds on the way to a monster that can pile up over time, or save them for later to possibly avoid a fatal blow at an inopportune moment while hunting a beast?

>>
>>44160257
In the demo game I played, we only managed to kill the giant Lion we were fighting because one of our guys dodged a swipe that would've killed him.

He then used one of his survival points to help one of us stand back up even though we were dying on the ground, which he could only do because the background settlement set up we were working from had developed Speech.

Basically his guy screamed at mine to stop being a pansy, staunch the bleeding, get up and help him stab the lion to death.

Which is exactly what we did. The other two guys died.
>>
Having had a chance to play out most of a campaign, I can say that it is a TON of fun. The only reasons I could see disliking the actual game, not just the $400 buy-in, are if you don't like tactical combat or if you're really, really put off by random elements having an impact. Because you can totally lose survivors to single bad dice rolls/card draws in the hunt and settlement phases (not as much in the showdown, you've got a little padding there).
>>
>>44160804
As someone who has spent an unhealthy amount of time playing Dwarf Fortress, having your civilization collapse because of bad luck is a positive, not a negative as far as I'm concerned.
>>
Hey anon, i think I'm missing an Innovation from my copy. Is there such a thing called a Hunt Shrine, and if so, can you post yours?
>>
>>44159586
Its really fun, combat is fairly simple and pretty brutal. Just one of the most annoying parts to me is that in almost any random event if you roll a 1-3 you're probably gonna be instantly killed.
>>
>>44160039
Survival is spent during the hunt phase in order to avoid various bad stuff. It can also be spent to perform the survival actions during the showdown that prevent damage in the case of dodging, or hits altogether in the case of dash. Read the survival actions section very carefully.

Also, do you have an innovation called "Hunt Shrine". I don't in my copy, but I swear I've seen other copies with it.

So OP, you gonna be one of those crazy suckers that plans to magnetize everything or are you just gonna glue them like the rest of us?

Also, what is your plan for who gets a model if so? So far, I've tried to give each weapon archetype a model, and then each player their own favorite model to play.
>>
>>44162168
I haven't thought that far ahead. I'll probably magnetize everything, I do it with all my wargames miniatures.

Maybe I'll just do what you've done though, mostly depends how I feel about modeling when I go to do it.

I may also just splurge and buy some more of the sprues. The KD shop has them for $25 per 4 minis, which is pretty good.
>>
>>44162384
I did the same and then regretted it. I would recommend not buying anymore until you can see that you need them. 25 individual customizable survivor models is a lot for a game when only as many as six will be on the board at a time, or at the very absolute most 24 for the final boss battle if everyone has a retinue at once.

Though throwing a few heads and torsos out to be used on the monsters wouldn't be a terrible idea.
>>
>>44162437
I also just like painting and displaying miniatures, so I may just buy extras for those reasons and have them for the game as an added benefit.

I haven't even really looked at the sprues closely, is it basically 2 men and 2 women for each armor set and then the hard choice is what weapon to stick them with?
>>
>>44162614
Yeah, the legs and arms are somewhat interchangeable though. And there's nothing to stop you from mixing and matching for a better look. There's three copies of each weapon for the most part, a righty, a lefty, and one with no hand, along with plenty of open hands to attach weapons to.
>>
>>44162705
If that's the case, I'll just find poses I like and magnetize the shoulders to swap out weapon options.

If shit gets more complicated than that, I'll just tell my friends to die in a fire if they ask why their sword wielding dude is holding a whip.

Who knows.
>>
>>44162084
Not really that into the game, but I'm stealing the last mask salesman result next time I have a minor quarrel with someone's character name in an rpg. Nice and outworldish, and they get a cool trinket to pacify.
>>
How the fuck do we adequately prepare for nemesis encounters?

Butcher wiped us hardcore, and we sent out scrubs in our best gear to appease the Kingsman encounter (even more of a massacre than the butcher fight).

Looking over the Hand's deck, we're in for an even worse pounding when we have to deal with him in 4 years.

Short of rushing the phoenix as soon as it becane available, how were we supposed to gather the resources necessary to provide the weapons and armor needed to not get our dicks smashed by these nemesis fights?
>>
>>44159586
It's become our group's go-to entertainment since it arrived on my doorstep a month ago.

I'm a bit sad that it pushes out video games, movie/cartoon night, and pretty much everything else we used to do, since by the time we end our sessions, most of us are dead tired from it now being 3am, but damn if we can't put it down.

Set up is a bit of a pain, though.
>>
>>44159093
Vibrant Lantern blog.

Thank me later, especially once you get to building the phoenix.
>>
>>44161822
everyone mentions the price, but this board is full of 40K and MTG.

>>44164775
my group just finished our first successful campaign. my biggest piece of advice is to complete armor sets and not piecemeal gear between survivors. our first couple of settlements didn't last long because we rationed equipment equally to try to be fair, but you really need to give survivors roles and play around the tendencies of the AI deck.

nemesis encounters are always difficult, but after you see them once they have very obvious strategies. if you have some survivors decked out in full rawhide with a bandage user or two, the butcher is not too bad. the hand is very gimmicky, you shouldn't be dissuaded by his crazy stats.

that being said, we lost two saviors to a level 3 butcher right before the watcher in one turn due to Bite. fuck that card. sometimes the game just beats you since so many turns hinge on a single roll.
>>
>>44167693
It still costs more than double what a GW starter would. It's worth it though. He would probably do well to release a 'starter' version, cheaper but with less content... but I don't know how that would work without becoming too watered down.

>>
>>44167871
maybe lion/antelope/butcher and the rest of the monsters in a separate box. that doesn't go that far down the timeline, though.
>>
>>44167693
Agree with you on Bite. Had an Immortal survivor die to that when otherwise they would have been practically invincible due to Infectious Lunacy.
>>
>>44167693
Yeah, the Nemesis encounters are... interesting. The Kingsman is IMO the hardest to take at the start. You need shields on any melee to handle his trap and have a dire need for high speed weapons to cut through battle pressure, daggers specifically for some of his HLs. Even then, learning King's Step (almost essential) is hilariously dangerous and his attacks are liable to mess you up proper. For Hand, I think the best solution is to not fight him. Give up on learning weapon profs and rock shields to block and Rawhide Headband to have extra warning on how to avoid The Penalty. If you don't open his lenses he's surprisingly manageable.
>>
>>44168975
Kingsman can easily shit out 18 damage on a single target each turn, or more if people are clustered together.

That asshole simply shits out too much damage every turn.
>>
>>44169124
We built a scrap dagger just for the affinities right before going into his fight, and then to our delight he gets absolutely shrek'd by daggers. Our Red Savior's never had more fun.

However, fuck that trap card.

Nemesis fights...shit is tough. The first butcher fight I encountered, we barely beat. Then, we roll a 3 and earn jack shit. The eKingsman was brutal. We didn't have enough dps to genre wounds- full wipe.

Huntil table for antelope sucks. 2 out of 3 times we rolled a level 2 lion instead. Full wipes. Crazy, but, crazy fun.
>>
>>44170029
>>tfw you've never gotten the antelope hunt event with the lion.
>>it's teeth every time.
>>teeth and arm damage

Also, we've never had an antelope eat anyone, but it must be coming up.
>>
>>44170029
Also, why in gods green earth are you not stacking luck trinket with Katars for that sweet, sweet 8-10 crit range?
>>
>>44170146
>put harp on grid to get affinity for +1 luck from charm
>kills character on hunt space because he's "noisy"

we've rolled that number 3 times now. our settlement has a no-noisy policy.

I think the circlet has the same affinity? either way +2 strength is pretty great. I would probably agree and suggest luck for regular hunts, strength for low crit fights like Butcher.
>>
>>44170231
Luck trinket has two blue affinities on either side, so swapping out the monster tooth and sword and you can put it right between the hat and the tunic. I'd agree that Luck isn't great for nemesis until you get the Cats Eye circle to rejigger the hit deck though.

Also, luck+mace vs antelope will literally make it rain resources.
>>
>>44169981
Man, we had 2 scrap daggers, and we were completely blown out.

That basic action before drawing AI is brutal with its 3/3/3/knockback, and even with decent head armor, Cleave puckers my anus just thinking about it.
>>
>>44170407
One thing to remember is that you can spend survival to dash after you've been targeted, and then run far enough away that he can't reach you.

IMHO that's the only way to survive some of the Kingsmans bullshit, especially since it's all AOE.

A full antelope Green Savior with grease and a shield tanks him like a boss. I wasn't doing shit for damage, but he also couldn't kill me. That was a lvl2. If only our blue savior hadn't been wearing fur the last battle before it got hot out we would have been fine. As it was, we called it a defeat and full wipe.
>>
>>44170308
how does putting it between the hat and the tunic help?
>>
>>44170603
It gives you the two completed blue affinities, which is how you get the bonus luck.

It all fits in a board just fine with room to spare for a dried acanthus or backup weapon.
>>
>>44170646

>>
>>44172617
Correct me if I'm wrong but nowhere does it say you aren't allowed to put multiple shields in your gear grid.
>>
>>44172730
iirc, I think it says that the only items that you can use duplicates of are weapons. I may be wrong though.
>>
>>44172971
Shields ARE weapons, you goober.
>>
>>44173042
And thus you follow the ruling for duplicate weapons on p.45 "A survivor gains the benefits of a weapons special rules only once, no matter how many copies they have."

And as clarified in the FAQ regarding having two of the same shield:

"Does a survivor with 2 Leather Shields in their gear grids gain +2 armor to all their hit locations when they depart?"

"No. The duplicate leather shield does not have any beneficial special rules. However, a survivor may receive the benefits of 2 different shields in their gear grid."
>>
