One Piece is an ideal campaign
Each arc is entirely self contained but they fit into the overarching plot and the overarching plot is so grand you can justify damned near fucking anything happening inbetween.

We used heavily modified Maid RPG. In the end it looked like the unholy bastard child of Maid RPG, DnD 4e and Dungeon World. Best parts include:
You can have a flashback in combat. The more detailed and more relevant it is, the more bonuses you get for your next roll.
You can spend the equivalent of DnD 4e's Healing Surges, but the effect is not instant. However the more people you got screaming your name in reaction to you getting hurt, the sooner you'll heal.
