What are some good ways of kicking off a game and having the party meet up with one another?
starting a new game with a party of 4 and not sure if they will all know each other in game or be banded together by the quest giver.
start the game in a tavern, hear the town cryer yell about a quest, be part of a guild and sent to do shit.
ALSO would love ideas for a BBEG

Is this what it looks like when people who never read a fantasy book play rpgs?

Bam, got them together, let them figure out why they're heading to that city on their own time.
LET PLAYERS AT LEAST DO SOME OF YOUR WORK FOR YOU, YOU DON'T HAVE MICROMANAGE EVERY MINUTE DETAIL
please help, i really am not sure how to start a game so to immerse the players into it

I've always been a fan of starting in a caravan with strangers or in a normal town, the addition of some raiders usually does quick wonders to bond people.
Depends on what kind of players you have. Some people only respond to video game style methods. Where as other people will put work in and help you make an immersive kick off.

I play with one other person out of five that does things because he has a character. The others just have some weird, silent avatars that shoot things.

See, in this case I wouldn't even bother with a campaign. Just download some adventure paths or something, hand them to your players and go home.
