Sup, /tg/, what interesting races do you have in your setting? Share 'em, brah!

I'm thinking about introducing Octopuses as a race.
It's said they have a mighty kingdom under the waves, but most of them live in solitary. A lot of them have migrated to the land for various reasons. They walk slowly, speak the common tongue and don't wield more than 2 weapons because they otherwise lose grip or balance.
They keep their arms free of burden but almost always decorate their head.

What do you think? Any ideas?

Why would the Royal Spymaster be some low punk from the streets?
>>
>>43943183
Because he is just THAT good.
>>
>>43943186
In what?
A royal spymaster is less about cloak and dagger but more in paper pushing

I'm loving the idea of octopi (i think that's the right plural form, might be wrong) is pretty neat, but what would be the mindset of the race ?
I like the idea of a monkey race, a bit like the pic, but not eastern. The octopus is cooler tho.
>>
>>43944076
It's technically octopuses, but octopi is fine.
>>
>>43943167
>>43943176
very cute <3
>>
>>43944076
I haven't quite figured them out yet, but someone here once told me that octopuses don't actually stick around to be parents to their children.
So I imagine them as very phlegmatic, lawful neutral, all business, few apparent emotions.
They have their great kingdom in the sea, but it's commonly accepted that young octopuses leave and find their own place in the world, often alone. They will rarely get carried away and will hardly show any emotion.
They are neutrally peaceful, will trade with other civilisations but otherwise stay out of their way. Unless they are faced with a dangerous faction, then the octopuses will band together and deal with it to restore the peace.
>>
>>43944076
I'm imagining the monkeys are very African/jungle/druid-like?
>>
>>43944242
I would say more of fanatic-like. Picture a horde of monkey (like in tarzan or Indiana jones or whatever) mixed with the Crusade.
They are scrappers too, so they look a bit like skavens i would say, mixed with european typical medieval theme.

I like slimes.
>>

that sounds scary. Why not eastern, it would fit the theme? Do you have a specific breed in mind?

I do as well, but not that kind

>Sup, /tg/, what interesting races do you have in your setting? Share 'em, brah!
>>
>>43944435
Eastern doesn't fit with my theme (kind of heroic fantasy, with early steampunk and post apocalyptic), and the idea of a screeching horde of monkeys with grotesque medieval armors made of anything they could find really sounds right to me.
>>
>>43944589
Oh, it's this thing.
While I enjoy the thought-exercise, these races are way to alien for my taste.
I feel like an original race, like many things, should be the right balance of recognisable and original.
Your players shouldn't have to ask if the Lepthino are the justinbieber deer or the mummy angels every session. But the elf/halfling/dwarf/orc settings are just way too boring.

Some personal favourites: Satyrs, Goblins, Dryads, Insectoids,....
And now octopuses.
>>
>>43944453
What kind?
>>
>>43944661
The schoolgirl, possibly-magical-realm kind. Not fond of that. I like my slimes more shapeless, versatile, monster-like....
>>
>>43944651
>I feel like an original race, like many things, should be the right balance of recognisable and original.

They are though...
>>
>>43944784
It's a subjective thing, but I feel like you are just wrong. A cathedral on legs that's supposed to have a civilisation with an unpronounceable name and little other context...
>>
>>43944589
Has anyone ever actually run this?
>>
>>43944853
>unpronounceable name
If you can pronounce "blasphemy" you can pronounce "Basphiark".
>>
>>43944864
Yes, actually!

And a couple of them were fairly decent as far as civilization quests go.
>>
>>43944879
Any idea what they'd be under in the archive?
'Civilization' is throwing too big of a net to actually get anywhere here.
>>
>>43944589
>Pervidate
>Cubist City
>>
>>43944879
what races were the most successful?
>>
>>43944227

That might have been me - I remember having this discussion.

I went in a rather different direction, with octopi-people developing as part of other civilisations, and other octopi generally don't see the children as sentient until they've learned empathy from other species, at which point they can join octopi-civilisation.
>>
>>43945887
Cool idea, has it worked out?
>>
>>43945952

Well, I',m still building the world, and they're still a part of it. I'm imagining the octopi having their own suburbs in human/batfolk cities, so that they can find the young octopi.

The biggest question is how the octopi eggs get spread around. I'm thinking of having the octopi have to go to the sea (or at least a large body of water) to mate.

Working out how they form kinship groups without any knowledge of who fathered who, despite most of their empathic understanding coming from species that do have parenthood, is quite difficult. I'm thinking they essentially.

Part of the issue is life expectancy - even the longest lived octopi on Earth don't live longer than 5 years or so (even giant squid). Which makes the idea of them having complex societies different.

I'm toying with the idea of them having a very variable lifesan, so some can die of old age at 40 and some can still be middle aged at 80. This naturally leads itself towards a gerontocratic aristocracy, with individuals associated with noble houses, in which rank is determined by age. Since there's no way of knowing how long you'll live, concerns about social mobility aren't a problem.

So did everyone else, that was the end of the sentence
>>

And then you took time to reply instead of reading the entire 4 sentences that described the subject.
Do you see why I don't value your opinion very much?
>>
>>43944651
I think they can exist in the world but I wouldn't have them as playable races because they would be so different, either in terms of society and personality or physiology.

Octopodes
>>
>>43944227
>They will rarely get carried away and will hardly show any emotion.

I think it'd be interesting if in speech reasoning octopi were always analytical/logical, but their emotions were prominently displayed by the color changes of their skin. So much so that it forms an intuitive body among their culture. Octopi display infatuation and hatred openly, but carry on civil conversation anyways.

Kind of like vulcans without the pokerface I guess.

Kobolds from UR. Seriously, although at first glance they're just furry things called kobolds for no apparent reason, there's some fun lore that makes them a little strange and unique.

>magnetic/stone like fur
>no apparent animal inspiration, setting them apart from beastfolk tropes
>Eat gems/rocks like Gorons, setting them at odds with party members that would prefer to keep gems as treasure
>triple wielding, very silly, but not totally ridiculous. Some animals can be remarkably dexterous while holding things in their mouths
>Don't have their own language, but pretend they do to fuck with people

In my realm i have Garuda
A race of religious birdfolk believing to herald from the Bird God of Smoke, Fraxinuz.
They're a collection of many different bird species with those that are born with a pair of wings AND arms are known as the true garuda and are worshipped as living avatars of Fraxinuz' power.

named after the mount of Vishnu in Hindu mythology

Lojban, the logical language, does something similar with its attitudinal system.
>>
My setting has;
>Humans and lots of half humans
>Monkey men
>Lizard folk
>Kobolds
>Trolls

That's really about it. I feel a bit like a hack.

I like races that are designed from scratch and aren't just XYZ-folk. Interesting takes on standard fantasy races are fine too, like the dunmer in TES (morrowind being my main reference point)
>>
>>43963011
I like it, but what would be the lore behind it? How would they be different from golems?

>>43965785
I mostly don't like races build from scratch, since they are either too basic or too alien. No reference point for the players.
Do you have any examples to change my mind?
>>
>>43952508
good taste. I love UR but I never had a chance to watch it live.
I'm sort of glad for that though, for what I've seen the twitch chat was especially cancerous.

The charr from guild wars are pretty cool. Culturally they're a militaristic mix of spartans and mongols, but despite being the most monstrous of the sentient species they're also the most technologically advanced and industrialized rather than just being big dumb brutes.

I'm actually quite invested in the lore, it's the main reason I'm still casually playing GW2. I like most playable and minor races, although some severely lack some history. Asura are probably my favourite.

I did enjoy that movie except perhaps the guy turning into an alien
