The Ragnorra plotline from the Elder Evil's book was pretty neat.
Ragnorra is this horrible positive energy monster that meteor strikes onto different worlds and starts corrupting everything with tainted positive energy.
At first it's pretty nice for everyone, since healing magic gets easier to do and undead start feeling antsy. Later magical healing starts to give you weird cancers that bring you under Ragnorra's control while vermin like rats and insects start breeding out of control. Intelligent undead also begin to either get the fuck off the plane or start heading underground en masse or else the positive energy will kill them.

Heroes also had the necromancer as the charismatic character who took control by emotionally manipulating a grieving queen. Markal was pretty much the best character in the game.

I think that was the plot of Shade's Children.
Lich foresees destruction of the planet by a horrific monster. Believeing himself to be the only being capable of surviving, he goes around abducting members of royal bloodlines of all species to preserve their genetic code inside himself. Is just trying to ensure the eventual survival of all the species of his planet. The player party is hired to track down the royal kidnapper. He keeps slipping through their fingers and starts several wars of succession in the process. The Lich even learns to use the dna he incorporated into himself, transforming into different species and hybrids at will. Only after he is captured and defeated does he monologue and tell the party of his true intentions. But then it's too late as the lovecraftian abomination rises out of the ocean to wreak havoc.
I thought this might be a neat campaign to run. Definitely needs some work but I like the idea of the freaky lich doing his weird lich experiments to prolong the survival of everyone.
I got in the works for a game a cancer mage but the mage is a worm that walks and the worms are tiny baby carrion crawlers. He commands adult crawlers like guarddogs/attackdogs/hounds and sends them to go dig up corpses. People keep thinking someone is raising the dead and amassing an army but it's actually the cancer mage harvesting bacterial and viral cultures from people who died of various diseases.

A Thri-Kreen (Or equivalent insect race in your setting) wizard/mage/whatever raises an army of insectoid demons to conquer the world, but just when the heroes start getting comfortable fighting them, it's revealed that they've been infesting sentient races ala The Zerg/Xenomorphs, resulting in scary ass Orcs with four clawed arms and an armored carapace plus a creepy mandible mouth. Also scary wasp-elves, beetle-dwarves, spider-drow, etc.
You'll have to journey through at least a town or two that's been infested and pray to your gods that you don't disturb the nest and unleash a horde of hungry, just-hatched monster people with nearly invincible natural armor.

No. The dwarves carved out a vast empire with fairly few problems. The dwarves just happen to share the same territory that the darkspawn infested while they hunt for old gods to dig up and corrupt, and steadily have lost territory over the centuries. The darkspawn themselves are attributed to being the result of mages intruding upon the realm of The Maker, cast out and twisted in their hubris. Dwarves can't use magic to begin with, so they had nothing to do with it. It was a really shitty deal for them.
