Why is this a thing? This is not okay
>>
>This is not okay
Tumblr pls go
>>
>>43714543
It's a thing because people have shitty taste.
>>
This isn't wow. Weapons and equipment doesn't stick to you on your own
>>
>>43714543
Imagine you belonged to a culture where the normal way of acquiring gear and equipment was to pull them off the corpses of the slain.

What is the easiest way to deal with people being different sizes? Obviously, you want easily adjustable gear and clothing - and the best way to make important things adjustable is with straps and bands, instead of resewing it for each wearer (like a Japanese kimono). So, the straps - should they be simple doubled loops, like are on your bag? Well, actually, depending on the material, if you have hard-used leather, a buckle connecting to a strap would be both the most replaceable and the most easily adjusted. So, if you think about it, all those belts mean is that you expect your killer to take your jacket. After all, that's how you got it.
>>

>>ridiculous amounts of belts and buckles everywhere

Why do people complain about this thing? How the fuck it this any different then any other type of fantasy clothing?
>>
>>43715474
Saying "This ridiculous bit of fashion looks like that ridiculous bit of fashion" is not an effective defense of it.
>>
>>43715414
The pic in OP is wearing assless, crotchless chaps. There is no way to adjust that.

The belts she's wearing seem to be holding then up by friction relying on her having exaggerated hips, but a slim waist, or else they'd just fall off.

The only practical belt is the one for her sword but she's got no belt loops on her assless crotchless chaps to provide retention so drawing it will be a damn near impossible.

But that's my point - the useless bits aren't weapons or gear, they're trophies. That sword? She's never drawn that thing, but if you ask her about it in a bar, she can recite the last seven owners and their grisly fates.

Also, all chaps are assless and crotchless - they're to prevent chafing, not to wear for modesty's sake. What she has on are closer to garter belts to hold up her leggings, with the leggings being custom-made for her. The parts on her calves follow this doctrine, but not on her thighs. With those reinforced knees, she expects a lot of action, I'd say.

Why not?
>>
>>43716510
He's obviously exploiting the equipment rules there, Tactics A2 doesn't let you have that many "trinket" type items equipped at once.
>>
>>43715620
saying "this purposely ridiculous thing shouldn't be so ridiculous" is pretty equally ineffective
tl;dr: skub
>>
>>43716701
Hey now, you've simply attempted to turn his line of logic into an entirely different subject altogether. We weren't discussing the artist's intent to draw an incredibly ridiculous outfit. Rather, we've been analyzing the outfit itself. It was never a question about creative reason. Functionally, you'd be grasping at straws trying to explain why anyone would willingly wear that outfit outside of trying to achieve a certain "look."
>>
>>43716591
I've long wanted to run a tabletop campaign in "Ivalice", but the more I think about it the more I realise it's basically Eberron but with less dragon-prophecy and more stupid Laws.
>>
>>43717475
they're trying to achieve a certain look
like fashion needs a reason
maybe you're trying to do something reasonable like that, but the OP's only guidance was "this is not okay"
so the thread's about skub
>>
>>43717491
It would only take a little refluffing of races and you'd be done, really.
And I mean hell, D&D 4e was basically FF Tactics: Tabletop Edition anyway.

>>
>>43715414
...And this is why my character wears custom-made armor. It only fits him or another dwarf as big as him. You don't need adjustibility when only one person is going to be wearing it.
>>
>>43714543
The belts and buckles are the least of the problems with that picture.
>>
>>43717532
Hey man, I get what you're saying. I do respect the artist's right to follow through with any design of their choosing, and I respect your opinion on the outfit. After all, what's fantasy without a hefty bit of imagination?

That said, I personally feel a certain line has been crossed in this picture. Between the insane amount of straps, the odd heel design, and all that kibble decorating the outfit, I just can't say I'm able to like it. Just because a design is based in fantasy doesn't mean we have to overlook the appeal of functionality.
>>
>>43714543
I count two belts in that picture and they're both holding something up. Nothing ridiculous here.
>>
>>43717754
oh no yeah that pic sucks
my only rule is that the outfit should fit the character. practical outfits are for practical people, dumbass outfits are for dumbasses
swap the two and you have a good gag, at least

MORE BELTS
MORE GLORIOUS POUCHES
>>
>>43717794
Good man. I'm all for dumbass designs here and there, as they can be plenty fun, but when you clearly want some added functionality in your outfit, let's lean towards simple and/or practical.

That said, it's all about the wizard hats.
>>
>>43717954
and of course there's the "over the top" phenomenon, where once you make something ridiculous enough it becomes fun and more forgivable
example: >>43714543
is covered in dumb belts, the artist has the gall to arrange them like they want to pretend it's not stupid, it smells of cowardice
>>43716373
has so many fucking belts it's just funny, they're displayed as honestly as possible, and it's clear this is not meant to fake practical. also, if rumors are to be believed, nomura made a lot of silly designs around that time to troll the artists and his bosses, so that's funny to consider too

Buttons get ripped off easier than buckles, and zippers weren't invented yet.

Between >>43715414 and that, you have a pretty solid reason for buckles being the main type of fastening. Alternatively you have rope notches and shit but that would be for nicer but not fancy clothes.

Also, Fashion. Do I have to pull out pictures of the retarded shit people ACTUALLY used to wear?

Eat shit, Yankee Doodle, you suck Fops Cocks.
>>
>>43718222
Yeah, everyone else has clothing style consistent enough that it must just be how they dress in Ivalice, but Luso looked like someone trying too hard to emulate that style or something.
>>
>>43718357
Look at his little hat. LOOK AT HIS LITTLE HAT, UPON HIS GIANT HAIR.

Know that you will never, ever, have 1/10th the swag necessary to pull that off.

Yes, yes you do. Nobody will believe you otherwise.

From Bernie Sanders book, specifically one of the incidents where he describes the madman he used to be in his wild youth. He stabbed a friend with a knife but miraculously hit his belt buckle ad the knife broke.

You'd think that he'd be happy to call it an exaggeration when he was called out on it but, no. He's arguing that it's actually true... along with the time he tried to hit his mother with a hammer.

Guessing that's what he was getting at. Belt Mail would make you immune to Bernie Sanders Rage!

The only wayward belts there are the ones that keep her weird pseudo-pants from falling down, aside from that every one is attached to a piece of gear or holding a piece of clothing closed.
