Modern Thread!
Before we begging i have a few questions:
Can modern be cheaper than standard?
How good is modern for people starting out?
What cards need to be banned?
>>43702056
Terrible OP. Can tell you don't play Modern.
Any tips on utron? I kinda wanna build it. I think it will be good in my meta because we have a lot of grixis decks and little fast aggro. Lots of people run snapcaster in U-Tron now, but is it necessary?
>>43703264
Snappy not necesarry. If there is very little aggro you should do well. But the deck is bad in aggro heavy formats, which is why I dropped it to play hulk footsteps.
Is Ugin good in Modern or will he be a worthless weenie come rotation?
>>43703264
It's relatively cheap and builds into UW (Gifts) Tron, if you get bored of it.
Snapcaster is not necessary but as in any blue deck, being able to recast your spells from the graveyard is a huge bonus especially with the tron mana. You can run him as a 1 off.
Against grixis control, I advise Chalice of the void on 1 or 2, often 1. It shuts down most spells, but beware of kolaghans.
>>43702056
Are there any more interactive versions of a Bogles deck? I like the idea of building a 1-drop hexproof into a monster but I like actually doing things on the board that aren't slapping down Auras
>>43703716
>Is Ugin good in Modern
Yes.
>>43703716
He's used in Tron, either version, as a 1 or 2-of, at the least. In many ways he's more useful than Karn.
>>43703583
>>43703722
Thanks. What about remand vs mana leak? I think remand is better in tempo, but I constantly see remand instead of mana leak in u tron lists. Is it just because of the draw a card?
>>43704159
Yes. Obviously. It replacing itself is huge.
>>43704552
I know its huge, but isn't actually taking care of a threat more important in a control deck?
>>43704159
Many utron decks are splitting Remand and mana leak as a hedge against the aggro and combo decks. Meta dependent.
>>43703882
>I like the idea of building a 1-drop hexproof into a monster but I like actually doing things on the board that aren't slapping down Auras
Brain does not compute. It's like saying you want dry water or hot ice. Bogles by the very definition/shell of the deck is as non interactive as it gets without going all-in combo decks, the most interaction you have is 1-2 Paths in the main. I mean fuck, if you are interacting with what your opponent is doing is you are either losing or playing it wrong, this is ofc 2/3 as true after sideboarding but even then interaction is limited as you would rather race than deal with what your opponent is doing.
Thoughts on Jace, Vryn's Prodigy in modern?
>>43704854
Good card for control shells, costs too much like every other moderately good modern card
>>43703716
He's played as a 4-of in Legacy, so the price won't tank, at least.
>>43705272
MUD or 12post?
this is a question directed more towards standard than modern but there isnt a standard thread up and its a general rule anyway
what are the rules on infinite combos? from what ive read it results in a draw if its like a mandatory infinite combo but i see a lot of (amateurish) decks still employ them
>>43705280
I know he's played in MUD, I'd imagine 12-post has found some space for him as well.
Though both decks are kinda fringe, it's not like they drive a lot of demand. Especially 12-post since you really need candlesticks to make the deck work optimally.
>>43705603
If an infinite loop is created that cannot be halted or interupted, it is a draw.
>>43705603
There are very few infinite combos that you can't voluntarily stop. Worldgorger + AD does it if there aren't any other targets for AD in your graveyard, and as a bonus makes infinite mana.
>>43705674
what about Duskmantle Guildmage + Mindcrank? im trying to make a low budget Tutelage mill deck and that was one of the combos some random deck list has
>>43705789
It involves them losing life, no? Eventually they'll hit 0 and die to SBAs before more triggers resolve.
>>43705789
Also, even if they don't die before then, the combo ends when they run out of cards to mill. These are both things you could figure out by reading the rules and/or the cards.
>>43705789
Duskmantle Guildmage + Mindcrank ends in somebody losing infinite life which ends the game unless something prevents them like Platinum Angle in which case it's a draw because the stack will just loop the triggers. Unless you Sundial of the Infinite or some shit to clear the loop from the stack.
>>43705826
>>43705870
yeah im just wondering if thats considered "infinite" and would result in a draw, but you guys are saying the actual act of losing would end the combo thus not result in a draw, right?
so im guessing something like Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood is the same thing, it just depletes their life until the game is over unless they do something about it
>>43705870
Actually you'd need some sort of Eldrazi titan/progenitus style replacement effect for that to happen since your opponent would eventually run out of cards in his/her library.
>>43705914
>act of losing would end the combo thus not result in a draw, right?
Yes, when someone loses the game that means the game isn't a draw. Were you dropped on your head as a baby by any chance?
>>43705914
Well, they're infinite combos, but they advance the gamestate towards one player losing so eventually that will happen assuming there isn't something else around stopping it (like Platinum Angel plus an Eldrazi titan to stop GuildCrank).
>>43705951
cool, thanks
>>43705928
>since your opponent would eventually run out of cards in his/her library.
But with an angel down you can't lose by any means be it 0 life or 0 cards. Also to lose due to milling you have to draw a card but be unable to due to having no library, simply having 0 cards in the deck does not lose you the game.
>"No game effect can cause you to lose the game or cause any opponent to win the game while you control Platinum Angel. It doesn't matter whether you have 0 or less life, you're forced to draw a card while your library is empty, you have ten or more poison counters, you're dealt combat damage by Phage the Untouchable, your opponent has Mortal Combat with twenty or more creature cards in his or her graveyard, or so on. You keep playing."
From the Gatherer page.
>>43705914
Yes. Most infinite combos that you see are designed to win the game and, as such, do not result in a tie.
Virtually every infinite loop uses triggers somewhere throughout the loop and, if at any time, a player would lose the game, they do so in between triggers (as a state based action). Platinum angel/Abyssal Persecutor does cause a lot of infinite combos to become game draws though.
An example of the bad type of infinite loop would be three oblivion rings with no other nonland permanents.
>>43705982
Repeat the loop until they have 1 card in library. Mindcrank triggers off of the loss of life from Duskmantle Guildmage and tries to mill 2. It cannot so it mills the last card they have. Duskmantle guildgmage triggers and makes your opponent lose 1 life. This triggers mindcrank but, with 0 cards left in your opponent's library, they cannot mill any cards. No cards enter the graveyard so Duskmantle Guildmage's ability doesn't trigger and the loop ends.
>>43706024
Hm, I thought mindcrank was 'whenever an opponent loses life they mill 2', small error there. The rest of the post is correct though.
>>43706024
That's correct actually. So it isn't actually an infinite loop if they have an Angel out (unless they also have a rider creature in their deck like Wurm), they are just left with 0 cards in deck and their previous life total minus their deck size as their new life total.
Why does Merfolk play 1 of Minamo? The only legendary permanent in the whole deck is Kira, and its triggered ability would counter Minamo's activated ability.

Beside island hate, merfolk run mutavaults, which don't add blue, so in a pinch you can tap minamo, bounce it with muta, and replay it for UU, which is merfolk's magic number.

I think it depends on whether or not he gets released in a duel deck. I'm certain Gideon will, but I think Ob Nixilis is more likely than Ugin. I can't see it unless they do an Ugin vs Bolas duel decks.

Could the new Kozilek, assuming it's real, see play in RG Tron?
I've been playing u Tron for awhile and now I want to build RG Tron. What pieces should I buy first before modern season?
>>43715427
I could see it. Refilling your hand is pretty monstrous, especially when you can potentially draw Sylvan Scrying and Pyroclasm to protect Kozilek from Terminate.

Not very good. 20 decks are viable and there are plenty of fringe brews that newbies will need to read each and every card in.
>What cards need to be banned?
Splinter Twin, grixis twin is too good, have twin players go 2-color U/R Kiki-Jiki/exach or go home.

How do I explain to a relative newbie that you can counter the flashback of a lingering souls, and that the card is then exiled, in a way that makes sense
>>43717967
702.33a. Flashback appears on some instants and sorceries. It represents two static abilities: one that functions while the card is in a player's graveyard and another that functions while the card is on the stack. "Flashback [cost]" means "You may cast this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost" and "If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack."
Second part is the relevant part.

Hey modern players. I'm an EDH player, I only play multiplayer, and I only play for fun.
Me and my play group are pretty casual. I enjoy making some "competitive" decks just to have, but they're not appropriate for my group.
Is Modern similar or is it too competitive of a format?
http://strawpoll.me/6046226
>>43723595
Depends on your definition of "too competative."
>>43723595
>too competitive of a format?
Pretty much. You can take you bad/casual deck to an event but you won't have fun unless you enjoy losing every round. Even the most "casual" or relaxed local metas I have been in are 60% tier2, 20% tier1 and 20% casuals that thought their 10$ decks will break modern or casual in general that 0-3 every time.
>>43723595
To me, winning is fun. I have more fun when I win, but I can still enjoy an interactive game of magic if I lose. I get mad mostly when I lose because my deck functions poorly.
>>43723856
>I get mad mostly when I lose because my deck functions poorly.
Not him, but what do you mean by this? Like you get shit draws or bad luck in general? I find getting mad at that is pretty pointless but understandable. The only time I get mad is when I punt, when I missplay, and get fucking furious at myself by doing a major missplay but even a little missplay that doesn't amount to anything has the ability to ruin my day by pissing me the fuck off for the rest of day. At least I learn better this way, I think so at least.
>>43723856
I am lucky enough to have found a deck that I have fun with even when I lose. And i get free wins against colonnade decks so win/win
>>43723911
I don't know about him, but if I make a mistake playing I don't get as mad as when I don't draw a single answer, or manafucked for 10 turns. It's just bad draws that makes me furious.
>>43724242
Usually I get more upset when I misplay because that was actually in my hands. Like if I draw really badly that's out of my control, there's nothing I can do about that so I just accept it, but when I had the tools and just used them wrong, that's when I get upset.
>>43702056
>Can modern be cheaper than standard?
Some Modern decks are already cheaper than Standard
>How good is modern for people starting out?
Modern is fucking rough for a new player, better off starting in standard/draft

I have to agree with the guy before me I only really get irritated if
I dont draw anything, we've all had those games where you need the fourth land that never shows, or NEED a natures claim that's avoiding you like the plague.
My opponent has or draws every out, every play you make, every board you establish, he has the one card to fuck you up. While I understand part of this is not playing around his outs, it's still infuriating to have your whole game fucked turn after turn.

As viable as it usually is. Tends to be good against most combo decks (Twin, Bloom), but tends to fold to aggro (Burn, Zoo, Infect), and GBx/8rack style control. Choosing to play hatebears and expecting to win is heavily meta dependent. If you like the strategy to the point where you aren't open to playing other decks, then some weeks consider dropping green and going on the vial/Flickerwisp plan as a death n taxes build.
I play Grixis twin a lot and tend to have a tough matchup against GW Hatebears or DNT but on weeks where I lose to those decks to go 3-1 I noticed they usually end up 1-3 after getting their head kicked in by Jund/Abzan. Having a solid sideboard plan seems to matter more there than with most decks in the format.

1 Mana Seism
2 Manamorphose
2 Past in Flames
1 Increasing Vengeance

6 Island
2 Mountain
1 Forest
Sideboard: 15
4 Huntmaster of the Fells
3 Blood Moon
2 Snapcaster Mage
1 Anger of the Gods
1 Slagstorm
1 Firespout
1 Dispel
1 Negate
1 Counterflux
Gameplan is EoT Gifts into some combination of storm cards (only PiF, Channel the Suns, Mana Seism, and Increasing Vengeace are essential, combo is faster the more cards you have in your hand). Then on your turn cast PiF and flashback Increasing Vengeance on Channel the Suns for 3x WUBRG. From there you can flashback the Gifts you cast and get a pile that gets Grapeshit into your hand. Grapeshot -> Remand -> Grapeshot with 9 or 10 storm seals the deal. You can go of as soon as turn 5, it's a one card combo if you have the mana, and it's resilient to discard and creature removal. You get fucked by grave hate though, so the sideboard can transform you into Blue Moon with Huntmaster beats.

>>43733512
This has piqued my interest.
Legacy player here, looking to get into Modern as well because I've got a boatload of cards lying around and I feel like playing more formats.
Have you considered running Bring to Light? In addition to finding Gifts, I feel like it could grant some flexibility.

>>43734011
I am autistic. Sorry.
>>43712745
>not running 6 cryptic commands
>>43734047
It's certainly worth a shot. I wouldn't run as many as Scapeshift does though, I would try one or two. The mana would need some reworking though. Blue Moon transformation sodeboard would be dropped for a board full of tutor targets and Gifts piles. You could probably play more Manamorphose and Channel the Suns main too. Sideboard 5 mana fatties to drop with Bring to Light as an alternate wincon for grave hate.
>>43717278
I rather play against a 3 color twin deck than a UR any day.
>>43732600
Newer players don't know how to deal with it as they often aren't informed as to how the deck works initially and if you only play it only once in a blue moon you can catch older players way off guard by showing up with a deck they really weren't expecting to see.

Modern isn't really rough for new players. Only few interactions that are not so easy to spot, much less than legacy or vintage level and only minor abose standard. I might actually argue that drafting is a lot harder than playing netdeck lists on modern.
Goyf isn't good in every green deck and isn't exactly unfair. What is there more creative in playing.... for example Tasigur or angler?

I want to put tron together, there is so much hate for it but it stands strong. And there is a lot of land hate.
>>43737859
With the speed of the format right now, most things you'd want to hit with Thoughtseize you'd hit with Inquisition anyways. Taking 2 off a Thoughtseize is rough in an aggressive meta.

Build it on the cheap. This fucker is actually close to being legit in Tron and costs nothing. It's basically annihilator 2 on turn 3. Honestly considering Karn exiles one card per turn, it almost feels like this is a slower but more powerful Karn.

>Implying Bane of Bala Ged doesn't go in the real deck
>>43738503
I didn't see it in any top 8 lists, I'm new to modern man I play legacy.
>>43738529
No one runs it in any lists because Modern is a stagnant format where people are terrified of playing anything unusual just incase it actually wins a game and their tiny mind can't handle a non-tier 1 deck winning a game. What do you think of Karlov of the Ghost Council in a legacy deck such as Maverick or even Soul Sisters?
>>43738557
That makes sense, tier 1 modern hasn't changed in s while.if you can gain life when you play it, otherwise if left unchecked probably devastating , like everything else.
>>43738444
Karn does his thing immediately though, he's always a 2 for 1. If Bane of Bala Ged gets Pathed t3 begin combat they just 1 for 1'd your 7 drop, which is basically the opposite of what Tron is looking to do.
>>43738605
Actually I don't think it does enough to be worth the mana investment
>>43737482
Tier describes prevalence, not competitiveness, even though there's some overlap. "How good is x" is 99% of the time a question about the meta in question. The same deck that kicks ass time and again in a given city doesn't necessarily make day 2 at GP in another country etc.
>>43732600
Because there's nothing like sighing for 15 minutes straight.
>>43737936
And I hate to be the guy throwing this out there but this test almost certainly isn't a common core test.
>>43739383
how is it not common core? How would you distinguish them?
>>43738236
Most game winning cards that is not the case, ie you cannot hit splinter twin or scapeshift with iok.
>>43739286
my husbando
>>43739409
You have infinite removal for the creature you toss Twin onto, and they have enough card filtering to find another one. Hand disruption also isn't as good against Scapeshift as you'd think since the majority of the deck is lands anyway, and now most people are playing 6-7 copies maindeck.
>>43739409
This + it works even against burn/zoo etc. It's better to take 2 from TS than keep taking 2-3 from a creature on board if you don't draw a removal/blocker.
>>43738236
IoK is ineffective against tron, which may be very popular in his meta
>>43739452
The argument isn't playing thoughtseize over other types of cards, it's thoughtseize vs inquisition, and inquisition is infinitely better against those decks.
>>43739467
Sure but also consider >>43739460
>>43739483

>>43739975
Suicide zoo I guess? Maybe?
>>43739975

>>43739884
I was actually thinking of using her as a budget Lilliana otV but she's $30 which really isn't budget I'd rather just buy the original. Sadly I like the artwork on Defiant Necromancer way more
>>43739975
8rack, at least based on my own games, even though it's a more difficult MU than combo and "fair" decks. If you play Smallpox chances are they never get Tron online, ripping eggs and card draw with IoK slows down as well, bridge stops Emrakul/Wurmcoil even if you don't dump your hand, g2/3 you needle Karn and/or Ugin. You have more wincons than they have O-stones.

>>43740477
what's the point of doran, fortress, and armament corps
i'd rather just run tasigurs and scoozes
>>43745138
My meta is very burn heavy. Basically finks is in there as presideboard help against burn without sacrificing creatures to run mainboard feed the clan. Finks is really good because it allows you to get a small amount of life and then put pressure on them, they won't want to bolt it just to have it come back and give more life so they generally leave it alone.
>>43745231
Playtesting with the deck I've noticed that they allow me to grind out the end game very well. Doran is a 5/5 for 3cmc basically that buffs your Hierarchs, Tarmogoyfs, Siege Rhinos, and the Ivorytusk so he's incredibly good in that aspect even better then Tasigur in my opinion. And Armament Corps can help with battles of attrition. Making a Rhino a 6/7 trampler is huge in grindier matchups. I'd really recommend playing with Doran and the Fortress to see how you like them you might be surprised at how good they are.
>>43745238
i see. Why not kor firewalker if in Burn heavy meta?
Has anyone used flickerwisp on rhino and finks for extra ETB?
>>43745364
That is a good suggestion. Perhaps I'll place him in.

Except that 8-Rack is a good matchup for Tron as they can't do anything about a resolved walker and O-Stone destroys them.

>gold at its current value is approximately $1,320 per troy ounce
>there are 31.1035 grams in a troy ounce
>$1,320 / 31.1035 = ~$42.42
>$42.42 * 1.775 = ~$75.30
>magic cards that cost more than $75.30 are literally worth more than their weight in gold
I always knew these things were overpriced pieces of cardboard, but this revelation just makes it feel weird.
>>43749890
>>43746521
Well thanks, I thought it was a pretty shitty deck (maybe because the cards I need will cost me 30€ tops) but you give me some hope to win a FNM or to have a good time and not be humilliated so hard at least.
Yes, vial is dogshit after turn 2 but it's so good as an opening hand card that I'll take the risk.
I don't Rabblemaster because it forces you to attack. Ok it's goblins, but sometimes I want to block or not send them towards an untapped goyf.
And yeah, low mana is great for this deck.
Anyway I think I'll take out two Tormod's crypt and two graffdigger cage and add 4 relic of progenitus to the sb
For Burn players:
How do you guys handle not falling into a Feed the Clan trap?
MTG has a stipulation that's used pretty often, "any card named X." Usually I only ever see cards that clone another card, both name and abilities. Sometimes I see a card that only copies abilities. Are there any cards that only copy another card's name?

>>43745576
No one plays walker, Bridge stops walker, if you pop a 1/2-walker you can Darkblast spam the thopters. Ostone is merely a setback since you don't ever dump all your wincons pre-stone if you can't Ratchet Bomb/needle it. If they have Tron online for instant cast+crack Ostone, it's the least of your worries.
>>43736427
For 4 mana you can do nothing. Mirrorpool's abilities cost 3 and 5 mana.
The weird anus symbol (<>) is the new colorless mana symbol, and is going to look fucking weird on cards that tap for more than one of it.
>>43744969
They're going to do a Return block to every place they're ever been in at some point, and they will all be like RtR and BFZ: disappointing, weak, and lacking all the things that made the original fun.
Except Return to Homelands. That will be the best set ever.
>>43752728
But you have to tap mirrorpool for it, so you're effectively spending 4 mana for the first ability.

but I know it's gonna be a "color" that is only generated from gatewatch cards and is only used in gatewatch cards
>>43725581
It's great if you are into the Gerard Fabiano style of play. I was watching him a lot of SCG coverage archives and got the itch to brew.
>>43733988
The reason for this is against a big field in modern (like an SCG premier IQ), you have to strike a critical balance between threat density and card quality off the top. Visions is great at letting you set up your hand in the early game, but there's not enough delve in the list to avoid frequently getting visions back from Tasigur in the late game. It's the best modern cantrip, and even with 3 copies in the list I often cast 5-6 a game. Since people's perception is that visions by itself is somewhat benign, I'd prefer to have it dig into action instead of more visions as much as possible.
>>43737859
It boils down to not enough life gain in the deck. It's the easiest swap from week to week, but most Tron players I match up against at my LGS are either U, Emeria-Gifts-UW, or mono black(!) Tron. If there was more GR Tron in my meta I would definitely do a different split between IoK and seize. To give you an idea, this week my matchups were
>U Tron 2-0
>UR Twin 2-1
>Naya Burn 2-1
>Abzan CoCo 2-1
This is pretty typical for my meta. Seizing an opponent with a fist full of Loxodon Smiters and Wilt-Leaf Liege feels bad. Losing 2 is insult to injury. Great observation though. The split between seize and IoK varies from week to week and it's very astute to critically consider why to run one over the other.
