Value itself is both arbitrary and subjective. Most people attempt to base value on a thing's utility to their livelihood (which is essentially un-quantifiable), which in turn makes the assumption that human life is inherently more valuable than other life a logical one. In many contexts, a fellow human provides more utility to the evaluating human in question, than another animal.
Placing human life above other forms of life is just as valid as placing it on the same level as other forms of life.

Context, for those interested.
A Swiss man falls into a crevasse while skiing on the Strahlhorn glacier. His helmet cam recorded the entire incident.
He landed about 20 feet further down, on a ledge next to what can only be described as an abyss. Uninjured, but unable to climb the soft snow back up, he anchors himself to a nearby ice wall and starts hollering (later whistling, or at least trying to...the air is too dry) for help.
Seventeen minutes later, someone arrives at the hole, and the rescue begins. It takes another three-quarters of an hour to get the man back up with all his gear...sans one ski, lost forever to the void in his fall.

The term was coiled by Julia Serano, who happens to have no latin knowledge at all.
It refers to the intersection of discrimination of both transgender people and women, where stereotypes surrounding both negatively affect a person. It usually affects trans women, partially because they're more identifiable, and partially because they're such easy targets, both to radical anti-men feminists and to men who hold prejudicial beliefs.
One example is how trans women who are assertive or domineering have this behavior attributed to male social values ("man in women's clothing" is a common accusation that goes along with this), while ones who try to be more passive and feminine get accused of reinforcing outdated gender roles.
Basically, it means that trans women basically get an autowin in any oppression olympics that get brought up, unless someone who's trans and also black or disabled is there.
But enough of that, before I get accused of being part of the spoopy skelington army by that one guy who patrols these threads looking for any opinion other than his own to shit on with reaction images that are neither fun nor have good filenames.
