Yes, the spice extends life, the spice expands consciousness.

Without Spice there are no navigators. With no navigators there is no interstellar travel or trade. Without trade worlds will die. The spice must flow.

Without it, every mentat, navigator, and spice user (which is most of the civilized galaxy) will die, so yes, the spice must flow.
>>
>>43455835
Didn't they have interstellar travel before spice? but the ban on thinking machines destroyed that because they were required?

they have ships that fly really fast.
what they lack is the ability to not fly into-things

this use to be done with robots because super fast reactions and what not,
but then they went full skynet.
now they're banned.

so instead they feed people so much spice that they can see the future,
thus not fly into things by steering before they're in the way.

no spice, no spaceships, no empire.
>>
>>43456255
Actually, they destroyed the machines because they were making everyone fat and destroying human creativity or something.

The Butlarian Jihad was largely a cultural/moral thing.
>>
>>43455397

No, they need just need to make their AIs three-laws safe.

Before and during the Butlerian Jihad both the Humans, Omnius, and the Cymeks had something which was passingly referred to a "Stardrive".
I'd assume it was just a vastly inferior FTL technology, since they can still get from system to system within a couple months (depending on distances).
The great shift occurred because manipulations of the original Holtzman equations allowed a ship to travel by collapsing the space between the ship and the object, allowing the ship to technically exist in two places simultaneously.

Ugh. He's the dude's son. How do you grow up with a man, collaborate on freaking novels with him, and STILL miss the point so fucking badly?

One can only hope that he's aware that if it wasn't for his last name he'd be known by 10 people as "That guy who posted the awful Dune fanfic".

In the first book Paul mentions in his inner monologue that they can make do without the spice but it would mean giving up a lot of the things they take for granted, and the spacing guild that was ultimately calling the shots was too spineless to call his bluff and risk losing their privileged place in society. He doesn't go into detail about what the alternatives to spice would be, unfortunately

No, navigators bend space.
There is no actual travel with navigators, simply a change in positioning.

For the time being? Yes. Leto II had the right idea in seeing it as a crutch that would eventually destroy humanity if we continued using it. His golden Path was the right idea.

The Butlerian Jihad happened because humanity was turning into pic related. When machines did everything for them, humans turned into giant slugs. Butler thought that in a short time we'd become the pets of AI and all freedom would be lost. It wasn't because machines turned against us; we turned against them in order to purify ourselves.

>Purify ourselves with neo-feudalism

Wasn't Dune's entire point was that their form of government was oppressive in the extreme and filled with Byzantine politics and backstabbing?

Even Paul's daddy kept a vanity garden when he took Dune from the Harkonnens as a "bravura". His house was only the "good one" in relation to the Harkonnens.

I don't think the Butlerian Jihad is supposed to be a good thing given how the Jesuit and Paul's own Jihad is portrayed.

Reading between the lines you see it was done so that religious dogma could have a stranglehold on the future. It's hard to push your concepts of person hood (and by extension messianic person hood) when man humbles himself by creating thinking machines better than himself.
>>
>>43456287
Depends on what canon you believe. By the original notes? Sure. By the actual novels? Butlerian jihad was a bloody, brutal, kinda magical-realmy mess. Like skynet and H.R. Giger and all sorts of fuckery.

They only had it because the Harkonnens put it there and kept it because it's also a saferoom.
He later used it as a political chip at the party.

The story is just Mohammed in space, with some lessons about trying to change the future and shit.

No-ships still require a navigator/high quality computers if you want to get somewhere safe. And since the computers are still iffy for zealots (and honored matres) navigators and spice are still numero uno.

>>43466727
the point of the Butlerian Jihad was that humans had stopped thinking. Literally anyone with the keys to the machines could have the keys to the minds of humanity. Without AI, you need humans again to plan and organize and think.

I don't see objectivists today demanding technology banned because it makes shit too easy. But I do see progressives demanding free speech to be torn down for hurting their feelings and people should stop using facts and logic, because it's problematic.
