It's only rarely pulled off really well (even in Lovecraft's own work), but ima second this.
Traditional demons imply that there are supernatural forces that care about humanity. If satan is trying to steal your soul, that means you have a soul, and there is a caring God who wants to take care of it. If you run into a no-bullshit demon with horns and a pitchfork, it should be a spiritual awakening--you now know with certainty that God will take care of you if you do as he says.
A Shoggoth is just some ancient civilization's construction and utility robot run amok. The really scary shit can't even perceive you, and it's just a matter of time before it wipes you out like your immune system wipes out a few million unwelcome bacteria. And that to me is more terrifying on a conceptual level.
