As far as I understand it the hook works by implementing additional rendering features and injecting those into the directx dll the game uses. Presumably this is done in C++.
Now I'm willing to bet there are not a lot of people on MG who could contribute but maybe it would attract more people if it were open. I certainly would like to take a look at that code.

How does Hook look for C:/TheKlub17?
I'm running a dual-boot of Win 8.1 and Mint Linux 17.3 with Wine. I have the exact same game (the VS repack) installed in C:/TheKlub17 and Home/[my name]/.wine/drive_C/TheKlub17. When launched from Windows via C:/TheKlub17/Binaries/TheKlub17_Launcher.exe, the hook loads. When launched from Linux via Home/[my name]/.wine/drive_C/TheKlub17/Binaries/TheKlub17_Launcher.exe the game loads but if I try to start a scene it sits at "Loading Models" for hours and never gets to the scene. BUT when I load the Linux copy from TK17-114.001.exe it runs fine, but without the hook. Also mounting my C: from Linux and selecting any of the various .exe in the C:/TheKlub17 install causes it to load the Home/[my name]/.wine/drive_C/TheKlub17 instead.
So I'm thinking that the problem might be because Wine is redirecting calls to C: to the Home/[my name]/.wine/drive_C/ folder and Hook is trying to look in / (root drive) instead of C:
Now I already know that pointing Wine to an actual C: instead of the virtual drive will fuck up the Windows installation on that drive. Thing is, the only reason I even have to keep Windows is because it runs Hook. If I can get Linux to run Hook by directing Wine to C:, I won't care if I bork Windows in the process. But if I try it and it doesn't work, I've got to reinstall Windows to get Hook back and then re-install Linux because Windows sucks.
So before I bork my computer, is there any chance of this working?

check your Archives/2.114.001/ for files named "Custom.NoRealModelsM.txx", "Custom.NoHentaiModelsM.txx" and so on. If you have them, just delete them and your male models will show up. There are also "Custom.NoHentaiModelsF.txx", "Custom.NoLookAlikeModelsF.txx" and so on for disabling certain types of female models, and "......S.txx" for disabling groups of shemale models.

Not really. The hook does a little more, depending on the version.
Hook basically injects features from newer versions of DirectX, without messing with the engine itself. As far as I know, for example, you can't make a game use bumpmaps, normalmaps, or tesselation with ENB.
You can make them go together though.

Aside using the in-site search engine, there's not much you can do. MG is a mess and will always be, but it's the only place to get what you need for this game. Plus, there is a lot of stuff you might want specifically and that no other anon likes/needs, so making a reccomended mods list is iffy.
It's best for you to experiment creating your waifus personally, play with the sliders and get your slider-fu going. If you want a certain character, search for their clothing, hair and accessories on the site using the search engine.

Can anyone tell me why the models from pic related look so ugly? I have a pretty much vanilla install, only with the required R9 scripts (I believe) and the custom files for clothes and so on. These were downloaded fresh from the site. When I load them on for the first time, their hair's always raised above their head for whatever reason and I have to manually set it back on their heads, which never looks good. Also, for some reason changing their pubic hair also places hair on their navel (?) which always changed and I can never find a away to turn it off. This happens on every character, not just the downloads. Whenever I change the nipples from whatever the characters have by default, the texture sort of blurs and drags off to the side. There's all that and the faces not resembling the characters at all, as you can see. This has been happening for months now. Can any of you people guide my hips towards the way to fix the stuff I just mentioned? This is really killing the game for me. Will elaborate on any of this if needed.

Every body mod clips, or doesn't quite fit into stock clothing. VS has made a couple of replacers for the vanilla clothing that will stop the clipping, but last I checked it wasn't 100% complete for the full game. Kasha made a high-poly version of the original game body, but even that was hit & miss. Use body mods when making nude scenes, disable for clothed. Or just deal with it.

You need to get HairSizer versions of your hats and glasses for them to work properly. Previous versions before HS wont work anymore.
Almost all modders updated their stuff to HS or offer both vanilla and HS versions. Check on MG on the add-ons section for the stuff you need to replace.

I usually don't talk about the development of mods but I feel like I should state my opinion, mostly for the sake of discussion. After all, we need something to talk about.
Probably a terrible idea but it's a porn game so in the end it's such a non-issue that I can't really care if people agree or disagree, or if Pervok feels butthurt because of my opinion.
I have said before and I still believe Pervok is very self-centered and quite a douchebag. He shouldn't charge anything for the development of hook5 for one simple reason: he's not only developing a mod for a commercial game (paid mods for Skyrim, anyone?), he's developing a mod for a PIRATED version of a commercial game. It's not even that it's a dollar. It could be one cent for all I care and I'd still find it baffling.
I have many other considerations about this issue and why I'm against it, but I think this is the biggest one.
The other considerations, which could be less important, are:

You can sort of do this with the strap-ons. There are realistic-penis-looking strap-ons you can equip, then equip the strap-on option "no panties". Also there are a few that are designed without panties to start with (called "futanari cock" or something)

just installing the Hook doesn't change things much until you alter the settings in the main.fx file.

The game itself does run under Mint 17.3 with Wine 1.6.2, but you can't add Hook to it. The launcher will still run, and you can select your models and stages, but when you try to start the scene it will sit indefinitely at "Loading Models". Hook 3 and 4, anyway, I haven't tried Hook 1 or 2.
Basic things like body meshes and textures still do a lot to improve over the vanilla game (pic related is the Hook-less game running under Linux) but you can't get the pretty lighting effects and bump maps.
can i save a character without having to save body/clothes/personality separately?

go into the Customizer, set up your character however you want, then click one of the other two faces (your other characters) at the bottom of the screen. When it switches to the other character, you'll see the mugshot of the first character updated. Everything (face, body, clothes, jewelry, etc) is saved in a folder in TheKlub17/Save/Models/

I don't use linux but to speed up the loading time I usually start the toy editor press F9 then leave and start the game.

There's a group of modders beyond the paywall. Hook5 bumpmaps and rooms are available for free on the garden. So, yeah, there's that. The flipside is that you'll need hook5 to make uptimum use of it, so. Yeah. Chicken and egg thing.
