Plot:
The world is bigger than you think...
After the explosion of the methane hydrate layer, the remaining members of mankind are forced to live in isolated domed cities scattered across the arid and inhospitable planet. They live in a controlled society and are assisted in daily life by autonomous robots called AutoReivs. In one of these cities, Romdo, Inspector Re-l Mayer, granddaughter of the regent, leads an investigation concerning AutoReivs that have gone mad after being infected by the Cogito virus. In the process, she comes in contact with a monster called Proxy. Elsewhere in the city, immigrant Vincent Law is on the run after being framed for involvement in several Cogito cases. Together, along with the adorable child-AutoReiv Pino, they set out on a journey to the dome city Mosk in order to unravel the mystery of the Proxies.

Already watched it and its a great anime. A bit pretentious and the first few episodes and the later ones dont really match well but the end is still okay.
If you dont understand shit watch the game show episode again, it is a huge infodump which explains a lot if you know what to expect.
Also the background story that isnt really clear (spoilers inc. obviously)

I'm not one for anime but I found it to be rather amazing. Definitely recommended.

I like it a lot so far (I'm around ep. 15).
I enjoy those stories where not much is explained, and you have to embrace the universe, and find clues here and there in the story to piece together the history, how things work, etc..
If i'd have to say something against it, it's that sometimes they tried to add some kind of backstories with the characters, and often it's not working, it feels a bit out of place.
Also, the characters and the personalities of those characters are not very developed. They still feel a bit anonymous after watching 60% of the anime.
It kinda goes with these stories where not much is explained, but the story could have used some more detailed characters.
We're never sure of what this character is thinking, or why is he doing that. It sometimes feels like we are watching the events taking place from far far away, so it's sometimes hard to connect with them.
But maybe it's not a cons for everybody.
Overall I'd recommend it, but you really have to pay attention during the episodes to get those clues about what is going on.

I think you're missing the heavy philosophical underpinnings of the backstory; it goes deeper than the half baked science end of things.

I know there are philosophical underpinnings but if you dont understand the surface story you can separate surface story from philosophical commentary. And what I noticed is that many people get stuck there. I at first too, until I read that the gameshow episode is an infodump that explains the world.
Also I think a major theme is how power affects people. People that are incredibly powerful also suffer the most. They cant find understanding by going to other people in similar situation since then their country/dome dies out. They cant find understanding with their underlings (ophelia episode) and they cant create true happiness.

Have the whole series on DVD since 2007.
Watched it onb a marathon every time one of the DVDs would come out.
Last DVD marathon took me 12 hours.
It's probably one of the few anime I would ever love, since I really can't stand most Japanese media, but the ending was a disgusting disappointement for me.
Not saying that it should be for everyone else, but Japanese anime just do not know how to write a finale.
