I bought carbon clinchers with an alloy rim. Not much heavier, way cheaper, no exploding and decent wet weather stopping.
I think the ideal for practicality these days would be a full carbon rim... with dick brakes.
Besides, the feel of a good clincher with latex tubes is pretty nice anyhow.

The problem is Sky's team is just too strong. Quintana knows if he attacks while Froome is surrounded by 3 guys there's no way he's going to be able to get away. What Quintana and Movistar lack are guys who can also stand their own in the mountains, and who can help destabilize Froome's protection. If Movistar could attack and drop some Sky's and make it Froome/Quintana a 1 vs 1 contest it might be interesting
As it is no other team even comes close to Sky. The other teams should try to work together to try and ennerve Sky, but they're all too scared about losing their positions.

That sounds like the same thing Froome says when he talks about how "The Tour's not over. We can lose it at any point. [closest competitor's name] is looking really strong."
What he wants to say is, "Do we really have to do this for the next week? We all know it's over. Just give me the damn trophy already."
What does it matter that BMC are fastest? What does it even mean when BMC is completely disorganized? Even if they were well-organized, neither Porte nor Tejay is actually strong enough personally to win the Tour.

He didn't actually attack, but he made a very obvious show of how much stronger he was than Wiggo. Brailsford didn't like having his team's leader showed-up by his own lieutenant.

Yes and he got back in line. That's the point. Valverde seems to just cycle up the road whenever he feels like it.
These teams seem to think "oh lets have two guys going for the GC just in case one has an accident". No. You're not going to win like that. Enjoy losing, AGAIN.

BMC have been very unlucky with Porte's mechanical. Being the fastest team in overall time means nothing, though, as in a good GC contention system there will be plenty of sacrifices of the domestique's times. The best team is rarely also the team winning the GC
Valverde just can't keep up. I don't think he rides for own success, it's just Movistar tactics. The problem is all their other guys who are supposed to be pretty good climbers (Anacoda, Erviti, Moreno, Herrada) have been nowhere to be seen this Tour. Quintana has mostly been on his own with Valverde
In the Tour where Wiggins won and Froome was his superdomestique, they still had Porte and Michael Rogers always thereabout. Sky have always had a good system of sacrificing guys to help their lead man survive. Their current line-up is probably the strongest they've ever had. The point is you can't do it with just 2 guys, and that's all that Movistar have left when it matters (Valverde often seen lagging at the end of the group too)

I think you'd be surprised, I mean last year Froome looked pretty weak on some stages and he was dragged up the mountains by his teammates. Same with Wiggo back in 2012 obviously.
And Quintana is *meant* to be strong enough but that organisation just isn't there.
Look at Sky. Their next top GC rider is in 15th, whereas BMC and Movistar both have two riders next to each other in the top 10. That is why they are losing and Sky are winning.
YES, they have had some of their riders high in the GC on previous Tours when they won it (e.g. Froome 2nd in 2012, Geraint running in 4th last year before cracking and slipping to 15th), but that's a BY-PRODUCT of riding in support of the team leader, it's not an AIM.

But I still think you just don't have that clarity and organisation that Sky have. Is Valverde riding domestique for Quintana? Because he doesn't look like it. And who is even the team leader on BMC, is it Richie or Van Garderen? I don't even know.

Neither do they, because neither rider has demonstrated 3 weeks of consistency before, they hedged their bets. Kind of a weak move really.
