What accidents is the halo even meant to prevent?
It wouldn't have prevented Bianchi's. It *might* have prevented Massa's but he didn't even die, and how regularly does something like that happen anyway?
It also wouldn't have prevented Maria de Villota's accident either (hers was similar to Bianchi's). And it sure as fuck wouldn't have prevented a crash like Ayrton's.
So what the fuck is the point of this bullshit? The kind of accident that it would prevent (Massa's) is like a once in 20 years thing. Literally how many other accidents like that have ever happened apart from Massa's?
>>69540567
It's fucking pointless bullshit.
Makes the car look like a fucking sandal.
>>69540567
Henry Surtees and Justin Wilson
It would have saved Maria. She wasn't going at the same speed as Bianchi and hit the leading edge of a tail lift of a forklift truck.
The main carbon fibre strut would have taken the impact.
She commit suicide though so counselling would have saved her.
>>69540042
Now add an extra line without DRS overtakes.
>>69540567
It would have prevented Alonso getting decapitated by Grosjean at Spa 2012, had that happened in the first place.
>>69540567

>It would have saved Maria. She wasn't going at the same speed as Bianchi and hit the leading edge of a tail lift of a forklift truck.
The main carbon fibre strut would have taken the impact.
I doubt it, the strut would probably be shoved in her face.
Also it wasn't during an F1 race
Also she's a shit woman driver and a proper driver wouldn't have driven into the back of a truck like that
>>69540645
>It would have prevented Alonso getting decapitated by Grosjean at Spa 2012
Firstly as you say he didn't get hit
Secondly, I hugely doubt the halo can stop an entire fucking car
So basically we're confirming that an accident the sort of which the halo should prevent has not happened in F1, besides Massa's, in the past however many decades.

I don't care about Williams, another 2014? Fine, let em have some podiums, they are a nice team after all.

it depends on whether they understand the regs well enough like they did in 2014 imo, if they just treat it as an evolution of their current car they'll be shite and probably fall behind renault and mclelen

>Alongside the previously announced Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car (which you can read here), F1 2016 will also include manual race starts. You’ll need to engage your clutch and balance your revs, as you wait for the lights to go out. Your reaction time is vital here, as too early and you risk a jump start, or getting stuck on the grid as the anti-stall engages.
>You’ll also be able to have manual control over your pit lane entry and braking, so you can look to minimising the time lost when pitting. You’ll also need to brake in time to avoid a penalty for speeding in the pit lane, which is also a feature included in F1 2016, along with a new five second pit stop penalty.

Why are races called "Grand Prix"? Is F1 a semen-slurping French sport?
>>69545759
only in English
everyone else have their own expression for that like 'nagydíj', 'gran premio' or 'grosser preis
>>69545759
rand Prix motor racing has its roots in organised automobile racing that began in France as far back as 1894. It quickly evolved from a simple road race from one town to the next, to endurance tests for car and driver. Innovation and the drive of competition soon saw speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour (160 km/h), but because the races were held on open roads there were frequent accidents with fatalities resulting to both drivers and spectators.
Grand Prix motor racing eventually evolved into formula racing, and Formula One can be seen as its direct descendant.

Grosjean was never good, he was a fucking mess in 2012, just fucking waste of space.
>>69546597
Grosjean is actually quite good on paper. He supposedly has a great ability to find pace in a car that engineers think to be impossible. This is not some fanboy shit, even Christian Horner has said that if he could choose a driver on pace alone it would be Grosjean.
That being said, it's his attitude that keeps him from ever getting a good seat. He is happy when things go well, when things go mildy wrong he is devastated and basically shits on the team for ruining the car, and this negativity further affects his performance. He should learn from what Vettel is doing. Of course Ferrari is shit and they've cost him victories on strategy alone this season yet he refuses to shit on them because it's not wise to do so.
That is why Grosjean is going to be the eternal midfielder
>>69546851
And what I mean by "impossible" is going faster than the time engineers/strategists/whoever have calculated to be the utter maximum performance of the car. Which is also what both Ricciardo and Max (and Vettel) can do occasionally, whereas JEV couldn't which is why RB chose fucking Kvyat instead of JEV.

>>69546851
Didn't know that, if you happen to have it, I'd like to see Horner's comments.
My major salt with him stems from the fact that Schumi's car was like a fucking magnet for his antics. In 2012 Malaysia, he maintained third off the grid, only to get tapped by Grosjean and spun around. As well as Monaco, Schumi had a monstrous start, and was just slammed into the wall by Grosjean.
>Of course Ferrari is shit and they've cost him victories on strategy alone this season yet he refuses to shit on them because it's not wise to do so.
This was the reason Alonso will never win another title, and why he'd never win a title at Ferrari. IIRC, after 2010 Abu Dhabi, Chris Dyer, Schumi's engineer, as well as Kimi's was forced out for his strategy call. That's not the atmosphere that wins titles. In 06 Japan, when the engine blew while MSC was leading both the race and the championship, Schumi returned to the garage, and hugged and thanked each member of the team. There's no world Alonso would ever do that. I'm sure Vettel's decision's going to come good, the Scuderia needs consistency, I still don't know why Domenicali was forced out, as when you think about it, the SF-15 was basically the last car developed under his guard so to speak.

Domenicalli was straight up forced out, with good reason as well. He didn't have easy shoes to fill but he made Ferrari full Italian-tier again, which resulted in the Alonso-saga. Pretty sure Luca was at the garage 1 race before Domenicalli got the axe. Then again Luca did get the axe as well lmao.
I do think Ferrari understand their weaknesses and there are probably several different factions within the team pulling it in different directions. I think most of the prominent ones understand the need to be consistent and patient though. Retaining Kimi, not firing Arrivabene etc. They are trying to think of the bigger picture. They just need to not be full mamma mia italia fucking shits and understand what pragmatism means and they'll be contenders again. Vettel obviously is just trying to mimic Schumi so this is probably his goal as well.
I think 2017 will see if Alonso was right or not. By 2017 McLaren have no excuse but Ferrari have no excuse either.

Was Domenicali that bad? I mean RBR were fucking mighty, also I don't think during his tenure at Ferrari he'd have to deal with all the drama Alonso brought in. If Audi does finally enter F1, I'd really be interested to see how he'd handle that role.
>>69548002
I don't really know if Alonso really brought in that much drama honestly. It's been exaggerated a lot and he seemed to be on good terms with most people when he left.
Granted he does have a no. 1 clause and the cars were suited for him specifically.
Ferrari is a drama team. Alonso didn't need to bring too much in except insist he is the no. 1 driver (which isn't a bad thing really considering he was racing against an insecure Massa).
Domenicalli wasn't the worst but he was full Italian mode and didn't have any real control nor was he a true leader trype

That's definitely true, but I actually didn't mind the VE Commo, until I drove one. The interior is so flimsy, it felt similar to my Mum's Hyundai I30. Later Commodores got to a point where it's acceptable and comparable to the Camry (which was also made here) but still worse then just about every other car (except Mitsubishi). And the interior materials feel like crap as well, but that just seems to be a GM/Ford/American car thing.

Why was the KERS system scrapped?
Using it in F12013 it's actually a great gameplay mechanic because you can use it to counter the effect of DRS. It was also interesting to see where each driver used it and it was another factor that drivers have specific control over.
They should really make it so that it is up to the driver to deploy it where they want rather than a constant thing it is now. Of course it's a bit gimmicky but so is fucking DRS so...
Am I in the minority for thinking that it was one of the better recent addition features to F1?
>>69554969
I'm just gonna clarify before some smartass points it out, but I'm aware the cars still have the KERS/ERS system but it's just a constant thing that is automatically deployed based on the engine mode etc. What I am talking about is that 6 seconds of boost-button per lap deployment that the driver could use.
>>69554969
It's a better, much fairer, feature than DRS, as far as I know. It all comes down to the driver's management, instead of giving a barely fair advantage to the overtaker.
>>69554969
Couldn't the DRS user just deploy and get double-boost over the car in front only deploying KERS?
Seems like you would have to make it one or the other over a lap, otherwise the car behind will be able to exploit it, and the same problem will happen. I think I would rather KERS boost then DRS though.
DRS is so fucking stupid, why not just allow it all the time so the cars can go faster always, how would that not make the races and overtakes more exciting...
>>69555123
muh show
muh overtakes
I think DRS is better than the trains of 2004 desu but it is way too overpowered. They should really restrict the effect of DRS so that it only delivers like a 10 km/h difference in top speed. This way it could be an enhanced version of slipstream instead of cruising past the car in front halfway through the straight
Also double DRS zones with only one detection zone are horse shit. E.g Baku, Malaysia etc. In Baku if you overtake into turn 1, you will have DRS for the second straight as well even if you are the car in front meaning there is literally no possibility for a cutback
Why is the FIA so fucking retarded, put an amateur fan in charge and they'll come up with a better rule set jesus christ
>>69554969
>Why was the KERS system scrapped?

Bureaucracy, Whiting, and Bernie.
>>69555190
Bernie is not the FIA though and at the end of the day, his money-hungry jewishness aside he is actually pretty based
I do wish that before he retires/dies/sells the company he would distance F1 from the FIA (impossible but still) and set a clear direction for the sport that is more in line with EVERYONE WHO WATCHES THE SPORT wants, ie less technological horseshit, more racing, excitement etc.
He will probably sell it to an arab or chink who have no idea what to do with it and just fully comply with what the FIA wants and all of a sudden its a fully electric series with closed cockpits
>>69555224
Bernie Ecclestone is just a pawn of the CVC. He's got full hold over everything F1, but in the big scheme of things he's a literal nobody. When he croaks they'll just put replace him with another cunt doing their bidding.
>>69555123
DRS' original purpose is to essentially give the following the car the speed it has lost due to following in the dirty air of the car in front.
Whether or not it is still doing that is up for debate but that it was never meant to be strictly an overtaking aid and is why they aren't changing it with stuff like 6 user per race or letting everyone have it. At that point it becomes exactly like push to pass.

The halo is a show by the FIA to prevent a concussion lawsuit like what happened with the NHL and NFL. Both of those organizations lost hundreds of millions in concussion lawsuits. The FIA does not want that to happen to motor racing.
>>69556835
these high degradation tyres were a joke anyway. why/how the fuck could the supers do 60+ laps and not fall off the cliff?
>>69556860
Pirelli made all the tyres the same and just painted different colours on them.
>>69556835
Hype ? Really ?
Bring back another tyre manufacturer for fuck sake.
>>69556860
>why/how the fuck could the supers do 60+ laps and not fall off the cliff?
because it was at monaco, a track with a surface so smooth the tyres could be made of goat's cheese and last 5 laps
at a track like suzuka or catalunya the supersofts would fall off the cliff after the first lap
>>69556917
Why don't we do all races at suzuka desu?
>>69556892
As long as they're still racing on 13" rims this won't happen. Michelin are better off sticking to Formula E the next few years.
What happened to the plan of switching to 18" rims btw?
>>69556942
hopefully it never happens
Lotus did a few laps during a test session on 18"s either last year or 2014 and it looked a bit very shit. Shitness on par with the halo.
>>69556968
>Implying
Imo it looks much better. Imagine you could have F1 look-a-like tyres like these (at least from the side) for your car.. I'd so gonna get them.
>>69556761
>>69556762
>>69556813
I'll stay alone then. Less dependents means I could then provide a more comfortable old age for my parents, and have enough money to spend on myself.
>>69557026
That's nasty
>>69557026
The only bad looking part is the red part on the livery
>>69557026
the difference being, of course, your car has enclosed wheels, so it would actually look good on them.
Big wheels belong on touring and GT cars, not open wheelers
>>69556892
2 tyres manufacturers are shit.
They just set up partnerships with the top two teams and only design tyres really for their cars and everyone else has to just accept it (Ferrari/Bridgestone vs Renault/Michelin).
Either 1 manufacturer or open manufacturers where the teams are left to source for tyres which meet some tyre regulations on size, materials and what not.
So Ferrari can go to Bridgestone, Renault can get Michelin's, McLaren can get Hankook, Haas can get Goodyears, smaller teams get Dunlop....etc
Oh and to counter act that >>69557026 open up the suspension so that teams can choose to run large or small rims with their chosen manufacturer. There is no benefit of the different rim sizes. It is solely a look thing.
Anyway, that's it for the blogposting
>>69557026
They look more 'normal', sure, but I don't think that's necessarily such a good thing.
IMO F1 cars shouldn't have bits on them that would look at home on a road car. It would take away from the whole 'unimaginably fast' thing (even though it won't affect the speed in the least). Both looks and sound do matter to build that impression, to a degree
>>69538164
Will Ricky win this time???
>>69557073
>>69557075
Small wheels/big tyres do the suspension. Big wheels/small tyres mean the constructors actually have to get off their asses and design suspension.
>>69538395
Delete this
>>69557147
Yes but if we leave it open then the teams can chose to do that.
Pirelli and the teams both said after re-configuring the suspension it wouldn't have any affect on speed.
I just want to see more variation between cars and different tyre manufacturers and wheel rim sizes helps with that.
Should there be an open parts rule within F1?
Choice of engine/tyre size & manufacturer, aero shit open, free usage of fuel type. All this but with some sort of cost cap or token/point system done by a third party? (e.g. certain tyres are valued higher than others by a panel after pre-season testing with option for parts to be re-valued at mid-season test) No in-season private testing or upgrading of parts, You buy shit engine on a gamble you must renegotiate with a rival company & use more precious upgrade points or deal with it lad until next season
>>69557212
Different suspension might make a difference braking stability or handling, which would effect laptime, but not overall speed.
But variation isn't gonna happen, I don't think. FIA is the organizational version of a police state. It's more likely we're gonna go the Indycar route, and every car will be basically a HAAS or a Newey-Renault.
Reminder that there are only two grands prix in the next month and a half.
>>69557026
15-16" would look better
now this is podracing
>>69556813
Who the fuck is that and how do I eat her pussy?
>>69557280
I think this would lead to a giant imbalance between teams.
>>69557489
christ, i didn't remember it being so fast as accident. and now i assuming he died on impact and machines kept him "alive" for nine months, for whatever reasons i don't know
Great thread, I think.

More of a funds imbalance; it's already imbalanced in terms of performance.

Where's muh nascar general?
>>69557075
It worked pretty well in early 97, but yeah...
>They just set up partnerships with the top two teams and only design tyres really for their cars and everyone else has to just accept it (Ferrari/Bridgestone vs Renault/Michelin).
True dat. ...Fuck, we're stuck with Pirelli then.

His hair was (and still is) fucking glorious.
Easily best hair and frankly best looking driver on the grid.
>>69558640
have there ever been any gay drivers in F1?
>>69558640
>best looking driver on the grid
I'd give that to Hülkenberg or Button (no homo)
>>69558640
That's too much Keke for me.
(I have the same hair actually, short is best choice)

You can google that.

I would legit like Nico better if he had the Keke mustache. It would be a good excuse for how shit he is.

There aren't actually that many gay people in the world. And since there have been on average probably seven new drivers a season chances are high that there have actually never been any gay F1 drivers.
>>69558854
Piquet pls
>>69558877
And count the fact that driving is a masculine, testosterone fuelled pursuit, making it unlikely that a low-test, homosexual twink would ever be good enough to compete.

gays have more testosterone than straight men
