And what he does is actually defending, smart positional defending, which is miles better than running around. I wish people stopped looking at his position and assume that he was going to score 15 and assist 20 each season.

In the Europa League? Money. The difference between finishing 5th and 8th in the PL is worth more than winning the Europa League. So teams don't take it seriously, unless there's some other factor (like how it was Liverpool's only chance to qualify for the CL this season).
In the Champions League, it's a combination of shit tactics, overpaid/overrated players (literally everyone in United's starting xi except De Gea, for example), exhaustion from tough domestic competition/fixtute congestion, and the fact that Barca/Real/Bayern/Atletico are miles ahead of every English club in terms of coaching and talent.
