The fact that Bergeron, Marchand, and Rask are under contract for a while saved their core. Krejci is too but he could be a valuable trade piece.

Chiarelli's drafting destroyed their depth (Hammill - Colborne - Caron LOL) and they have no promising defenseman in the system other than Colin Miller. The point of the trade is that they improved their defense, which is what they needed to do. Hopefully they can keep more pucks out than what they put in, which is the goal, not scoring a bunch and hoping you come out ahead like the Stars.
