Everyone where I grew up played soccer as kids, but once we reached high school the vast majority of us stopped.
There's just not generally a strong sense of community or of athleticism needed for local amateur clubs, and those are pretty necessary for major clubs to exist. The only major soccer players have to go through the university route, and that just isn't accessible for enough people.
Most Americans don't live in an area where they can just walk a few minutes to a field for a pickup game. It's a definite shame.

You would need some soccer players to really burst onto the scene and make the sport "cool" here, akin to how basketball/football players are perceived. Among other things the US needs a star player kids can look up to and be the face of US soccer. Donovan was kind of like that for a while but nobody's taken his place after he left. Memes aside that is one of the reasons I'm really hoping Christian Pulisic continues to improve at Dortmund and eventually becomes a regular starter at top-tier club. Football is like the 8th or 7th most popular sport in the US, most people don't watch it or care about it and their fanbase is almost completely composed of children, kikes and hipsters. The US team is composed almost entirely by rejects of other sports, and all their best athletes prefer to play other sports than football.
And yet they're still able to be 4th in what is possible the second hardest continental competition in the world (the Copa America), even more than what my country manage to do.
