In hockey for the most part you just need an average coach. There's only a few shitty ones that have a massive (negative) impact. This year that group included Johnston, Roy, Hartley, off the top of my head, not sure who I'm missing.
There's also guys like Babcock who is really really good with systems, to the extent where he somehow got the Leafs to be above 50% possession with that godawful roster. But obviously good systemic results + possession doesn't result in goals if the horses ain't there.
Your team is fine as long as you have an average guy who makes questionable lineup choices now and then (all NHL coaches do) but doesn't actively harm the team systemically.
