But putting him there on corners means a position player doesn't have to sit back behind the play, and can instead get involved.

so there is always one more player you can pass it to. it's not that hard to understand. the CBs can just pass it 20m back to Neuer when they're under pressure. Otherwiese they would have to hoof it out of the stadium. If they lose the ball it's over anyway, no matter how much space there is between Igor and and Neuer.

I watched a Bundesliga game where he was in that position. He received the ball, played it forward and Bayern scored within a pass to go up, and they went on to win it. He's there for a reason, and it ocassionally pays off.

he is there because ukraine doesn't have an attacker around the midfield, which is a positioning error on their side. if they had their forward just behind the midfield line, to avoid any offside for a long pass, two fast players - not necessarily centre backs as they would probably be in the penalty area to score a header - he would have positioned around the borders of his own penalty area.
