Michigan and Cali were the reason for the tapered spacer horsepower reduction
They were approaching 220mph into the corners at Michigan with the 900+ hp engines
As I understand it, NASCAR's insurance company forced them to introduce the tapered spacer to cut the corner entry speeds, they feared injury to spectators in the event of a wreck at 215+mph
