Ah yes, that freekick against Greece. I can see why he's a true English "legend".
>>
>>68225612
We don't rate him that highly here desu
>>
Where does he rank among Gerrard, Scholes, and Lampard?
>>
Beckham was an excellent player in that "cog in a machine" way. Nowhere near a true individual talent like e.g. Zidane.
>>
>I start watching football in 2010 and let me explain why Beckham is shit
>>
>>68225612

Did you watch the match m8? He was GOATing it up the whole time.

Not that I think he's a "legend" or anything but that performance was fucking lit
>>
>>68225655
Above Lampard, below Scholes and Gerrard.
>>
It wasn't his skills that made him great, it was his leadership.
>>
>>68225655
Personally, none of them, including Beckham, really performed for England with any degree of consistency.

I would say Scholes was the most talented of the individuals though.
>>
>a freekick in the wc quali is the greatest moment of english football history since 1966
>>
Almost all of that 'golden generation' has retired, and they've left zero legacy.
>>
>>68225726
I did, it was average. He did nothing to stand out (fk aside) at all. People just look back on the game with nostalgia and with a cloudy mind have convinced themselves it was good because of muh feels

>>68225751
>it was his leadership.
Kek.
>>
>>68225792
We were one fluke free kick away from wining the WC in 2002, and we would have won the 2004 euros if we hadn't been refballed out.

The 5-1 against the Huns was pretty fun tbf.
>>
>>68225749
>Above Lampard, below Scholes and Gerrard.

So you're putting Lamps last despite the fact he scored by far the most goals both for club and country?

You are having a fucking laugh mate
>>
>>68225837
Mate, you're embarrassing yourself.

If Argentina had scored one more goal in their game against Sweden, we'd have gone out in the group stage.
>>
People will say this but what else have we achieved in the last 50 years?

Getting to the semis in 90, 4-1 Holland, 5-1 Germany and this are probably the only other great moments as an England fan in that time.
>>
>>68225837

>would have could have should have

Nothing, it's why some of our fans go wankmad for le ebin fweekik against the might of Greece.

Fucks sake you beat me to it
>>
>>68225943

>>
Don't forget that great penalty against Portugal
>>
>>68226010

Are you seriously pulling out a 14 year old World Cup qualification game as the greatest moment in Englands history?
>>
>>68225809

>did nothing to standout

He won the ball back multiple times in the second half which he dominated. Won the fk that led to the first goal all by himself then delivered a beautiful ball for Sheringham to head home. Drove the team forward when Scholes and Gerrard were shitting the bed.

His fk sucked pretty much all match which is funny that that's what people remembered. His second half was fantastic.

No, that would be 1966. 5-1 is the second best.

3rd best is beating you 3-2 in your own back yard just the other day.
>>

>did they forget how the wc02 ended ?

You got the easiest draw in history and went down easily to the first good team you played?

Beckham played soccer?
>>

Our team was so fucking shite around that time, not winning in double figures is an embarassment, m8.

Really? Reaching a Euro semi-final 20 years ago doesn't seem like much of an accomplishment for a world cup winning country.

Especially since Czech Republic, Portugal (three times), Greece, Turkey and Russia have all done it since.
>>
>>68227158
We're talking about England's biggest momenta since '66.

There's not many, that was one though.

Beckham was burned in effigy, by England fans, in the summer of 1998. The smoke was then blown up his arse from 2000 onwards.
>>
>>68227233
They've honestly had the potential for a lot more for quite a while.

I don't know how the fuck they've managed to screw up so much without even reaching a single final since 66.

For fuck's sake Greece won a Euro, Netherlands got a team led by lcim, Van Persie, past his prime Sneijder and a bunch of literally whos to a WC semifinal, France, Italy, Germany and Spain all won WCs in the past 20 years and all have at least reached the Euro final since.

Are you joking? He was playing like a man possessed that game. Everyone else had given up.

It wasn't just that game either, Beckham is the only from that golden generation who left it all on the pitch every single game. He reveled in playing for England while everyone else was scared of it.

Underage detected

The 96 Euros was incredible the whole way through, the atmosphere in the country and how well the team was playing was incredible, they all genuinely cared so much about winning that tournament. Granted we lost to Germany there too but only on pens and the rest of the summer made up for it.
>>
>>68226101

It's hilarious every time I see it. I'm pretty sure by that point Germany had already qualified and the game was meaningless for them.

Beckham massively underperformed in every major competition finals he played in.

No, Germany actually had to play the Ukraine in a final decisive game because they couldn't qualify directly.

Then they still reached the World Cup final with that awful team while England got knocked out in the beginning as always.

>>68241813
from an english perspective he means
i would wager it's the fondest memory of all tournaments for english people under 40

Actually, they went out in the QF against Brazil. But they only had themselves to blame since they would have avoided Brazil until the semis if they had just beaten Sweden or Nigeria.
>>
>>68240838
Germany only needed to score one goal in their last game against Finland to win the group, so Becks' le ebin legendary free kick would have meant fuck all.
