Your principle is still completely wrong. It's not really the number of countries participating that makes a sporting event popular. It's the number of people from a country that watch it.
E.g. in the Olympics 100m men's final, arguably the highlight event of the Olympics, lots of people watch it but you don't have a whole country getting behind their athlete, in the same way that you do in football. THAT'S what makes football so popular, and why so many hundreds of millions of people watch it. If England play Germany then the whole of England gets behind them and the whole of Germany gets behind their team. And then if it's the WC final then everyone tunes in because it's the most important sporting event in the world really.
