You always make the effort to contact the subject and give them a chance to comment. Not doing so is unethical.
His second mistake, which he discussed on his YouTube show today, is to get too close to who you're covering. He had "permission" from Dana White to break news, and he was flattered by this. He doesn't need Dana White's permission to report on UFC. Again, though, he should offer the company a chance to be on the record about news.
His third mistake is to ask his subjects' permission to ask questions. He doesn't need their permission. They can refuse not to answer. This business about never wanting to hurt Ronda Rousey's feelings with a question is bullshit. If she doesn't like the question, she can refuse to answer.
