that's not the point though, if anything that only helps its case. it's the single most prevalent and culturally-conscious sporting event in america's history. even people who had no interest or knowledge of sports knew about it, because it was a huge deal that swept the entire country. sure, lots didn't care much, but it was still neat. there's plenty more people that don't know about other famous sporting events within the past generation, because they were either specific to that sport's subculture, or at the most to american sports fandom in general.
very rarely do we get a sports event that breaks into mainstream awareness, and even less often do we get one that becomes a celebrated event by the whole nation. the miracle on ice was the greatest one of those.
