The thing is that only a small percentage of Americans regularly participate in soccer threads and vice versa for foreigners and American sports. Even though the board might be "faster" now, the majority of threads won't be interesting for any given poster.
Having two separate boards would be slower overall, but it's better when the majority of threads are gamethreads; we don't need to constantly be discussing sports.
