Barzagli-Chiellini-Bonucci literally pales when compared to our past defense. They, and Buffon too, looks good because they play in Serie A. Whenever they faced some actual world class team they spilled spaghetti so hard it was cringy to see them (Spain in 2012, Barça in 2016, Bayern in 2016).
Italian current defense is kinda good, but nowhere near the legendary statur their predecessors achieved.
Probably Sirigu or Marchetti, but I like more Sirigu, he also has more international experience to deal with some important match. Marchetti has showed that he has a lot of problem dealing with high pressure game. Donnarumma and maybe Scuffet will be the next generation gk, but we'll probably see them starting in the NT in about 5-10 years

Kahn, Ballack, Schweinsteiger, Lahm
Some will question Ballack and Schweinsteiger, but Ballack played during a time where Germany was extremely weak and he still carried them to later stages of multiple tournaments.
