30 teams in the MLB. Two leagues, American and National. 15 teams each. 3 divisions of 5 in each league. The winner of each division gets a playoff spot. The two non-division winning teams with the best record get a Wild Card spot (in each league, four WCs total). The Wild Card game is a one-off. The winner of that game plays the division winner with the best record in a best of 5. The other two teams in the league play a best of five. The winners then face each other in a best of seven. The winner of that has won their league and goes on to the Worlds Eries.
So: Five playoff teams per league. Two one-off Wild Card ganes (one per league). Four best of five division series (two per league). Two best of seven championship series (one per league). One seven game Worlds Eries.

Winning the American League or National League used to be a massive deal, because back in the day it worked more the same way that England's soccer league works. The team with the best record in each league won it and automatically went to the World Series. Now, with the playoffs, winning the league feels more like winning a semifinal, although it can still be a big deal if it's a rivalry game.
The Yankees-Red Sox ALCS in 1999 and 2003 are great examples of this.

-American League (founded in 1901)
Teams only played within their own league, and at the end of the season the team with the best record was declared league champion and advanced to the World Series to play against the other league champion. Well, technically they could. If the player doesn't have a no-trade clause (or waives it) a team could trade them for pretty much anything. Say Player A has 100 million on his contract. Team B trades Team A 100 million dollars for Player A. Team B would still have to PAY Player A the 100 million on his contract though.
Normally, only incredibly shitty players get swapped for cash. Nobody trades anyone of value for anything short of draft picks. Hell, often a contract is so onerous that a team will pay another team to take it off their hands. Say a player has 80 million left over 4 years. His team could send him and 20 million to another team (for some dogshit prospect) just so they don't have to pay him to play for them anymore.
But barring felony conviction, whatever team a player is in has to pay their contract. Some do have buyout clauses though.

Ideally, in my opinion, all expansion teams should be dissolved and the two leagues should be made up solely of the original 8 teams in each league. The central division should be eradicated also and have 4 teams in an east and 4 teams in a west division of each league. The regular season schedule would be play the 3 teams in your division 21 times each, the 4 teams in the other division 15 times each and the 8 teams in the opposite leauge 5 times each. I don't know how they happen in European soccer. But big money deals happen during free agency in the offseason. Teams bid by offering contracts to players not currently under contract. There can also be trades, but like I said only dogshit nobodies get traded for anything less than other players and/or draft picks.
The big money free agents often get no trade clauses. Or limited no trade clauses (with exceptions to teams they'd be willing to play for).
Also, the draft isn't nearly the big deal it is in other sports. There are a LOT more baseball players than hockey, football or basketball. Only the first round really draws attention. Because baseball prospects take years and years and years before they even make it to the majors - let alone before they git gud - they don't draw the same attention as guys in other sports who join the team from the go and can impact that season or the next.
Very rarely do players reach the majors within two years of being drafted, and even then those are top 10 picks, usually with a few years of college ball already. Bryce Harpers and Alex Rodriguezs are once-in-a-decade cases.

Yes. All but the prodigies tend to do some college ball (and a lot of the prodigies do too) in order to get better and improve their draft stock.
When a team drafts (and signs) a players, they'll assign them to a certain level depending in their talent. There's the major league club, then AAA, then AA, then High A and Low A (and some other levels below that). The youngest and rawest usually go to the A levels first for development and honing of fundamentals. Top-tier and/or college-tested prospects usually start in AA. AAA is the last test for a prospect. It's where all the top prospects are, the not-good-enough-for-the-majors-but-too-good-for-AAA guys, struggling major leaguers, old veterans looking to prove they still have something in the tank, etc.

Forgot to add: age depends. Pitcher generally take longer than hitters to develop. Even blue-chip top-10 prospects don't arrive until 21/22/23. Often they're only called up in the last month of the season (in September the roster expands from 25 to 40 for this). Often only called up for a game or a week because of an injury or a scheduling quirk then sent down again.
Most that make it to the majors don't stick in the majors until middle 20s.

Well there are 25 roster spots on the MLB team. And due to the nature of contracts, and the lack of a salary cap, every team will have at least 10 guys in several consecutive seasons. Good teams with smart management will have a handful of good guys under several years of contract together, but it's not easy.
Because there is no salary cap, the biggest market teams and/or those with the least jewy owners can just outbid small-market teams for their best young players when their contracts are up. And these contracts for All-Star level players are so expensive even the richest teams have trouble keeping more than 3 or 4 together for a couple years.
The best teams have a core of two or three (or possibly more) A+ talents, several B- to A- talents, and the rest niche players, specialists and a couple hot-shot youngin's.

The Cubs are actually a really good choice for bongs, besides the fact that they're young and great. Because they play in a residential neighborhood, the super-majority of their home games are in the day. 1:20 local, so about 7 p.m. (for you). They play far more day games than anybody else in the league. Also, their games are broadcast on a national network (WGN), and they're popular all over the country, so you're more likely to find streams of their games. Catch a Cubs home game some time.

Yes. That batter is out, however other runners on base MAY advance (if they tag the base after the ball is being caught and the play is still live).
This brings up what's known as a sacrifice or "sac fly" in which a batter "flies out" (what we call a ball caught in the outfield) but the runner has enough time to tag up and cross home plate.
For the record, fly outs, pop outs and line outs and virtually the same thing, they just describe HOW the ball was batted/caught.

Eh, most of the people in this thread weren't even alive before the current playoff system was implemented, I sure wasn't. I have no real basis to compare the two systems. The current playoff system makes the end results a little more unpredictable than just having the two teams with the best records from each league play each other in the World Series which has its pros and cons because "anything can happen in the playoffs". I don't mind the current playoff system really, I feel like the MLB would just make everything worse if they tried to tweak the system to "fix it" (see this year's stupid fucking slide rule).

But yeah, I think Peavy and Cain are finally starting to get a handle on their shit. The loss to their Jays starts were partly due to sleepy bats, but Peavy posting a 3 hit, 1 run game on the 14th and then Cain following it up with a 7 hit, 1 run game the following day is a pretty good sign I feel like.
